A Muslim is someone that adheres to a specific religion, not a race of people.

How do you identify an illegal Muslim? ...

This shit only reinforces why I am a liberal.

"How do you identify an illegal Muslim? ... "

I dunno, let's ask the experts.

The experts in Ba'hrain? The experts in Jordan? the experts in Iran? the experts in Wahabi-infested Saudi Arabia?

I'm sure that when one announces that "I am a liberal," the accusers would not venture further as to if you are a Sunni or Shia anymore, and you would be spared the stoning or the shooting of the others who answered wrongly.

Sorry, my previous response was only to point one thing out.

My fondest wish is that some of these (OK, all of these) people so concerned with legality or constitutional questions regarding this or that, or wanting to implement the faith understanding in schools or the ten commandments on public façades, etc. would just move to a country that already operates that way.

Sorry if it happens to be the wrong faith, but such mindsets are easily converted in about 2 weeks. Good riddance.

On behalf of Jews everywhere, I would like to express appreciation that you chose not to include us in your list of undesirable groups.  We truly value and cherish your opinion of us.

Its diversity that makes this country great. Take last week, we were all Irish for the day. Could go into a Irish bar and see people celebrating their "difference". I am not sure why everyone has to make it seem bad.

I don't agree.  To me, the things that made the country great are things like freedom, and the concept (admittedly not perfect) that people get rewarded for effort, and the ability to raise capital relatively quickly and easily.

That said, I do get a kick from diversity.  I speak a crappy Spanish and half a dozen words in half a dozen languages.  I like diversity as a means of keeping things a little less boring.

quote:

ORIGINAL: DomYngBlk

I don't know spanish but I am positive I could learn it. We are the only country on earth that is too lazy to learn another language. Its pathetic.

Of course you could.  It's much easier to learn it than, say, Russian or Navajo.  But "countries" do not learn languages - people do.  If you go to a country where English is not the national language, you'll find people in the big cities speak English because it's the lingua Franca.    But once you go to the smaller towns, you'll find monoglots.

Nope. I am tired of celebrating diversity. I do not think that it is even healthy to do so.

Celebrating diversity means celebrating differences. So first those differences have to be enumerated. Which leads to stereotyping and pigeon-holing people into some one-dimensional view.

It also sets up an Us versus Them mentality. You see it all the time and does not lead to harmony and happiness. It leads to the demonization of the "other."

Uh.....remember that whole idea of a great melting pot?

And the inscription on the Statue of Liberty?

People like you astound me.

Diversity is what this country was built on.

Aylee, please allow me to step in here.

The melting pot and diversity are two opposed concepts.

The melting pot implies that people blend in and lose their ethnicity to simply become Americans.

Diversity celebrates those ethnic differences.

The country was actually built more on blending than on diversity.

The man said pretty much the same thing, DS. People came to america for a better chance... many for simple survival... and they hungered to blend in. Now they come for that better chance while demanding to be seperate from the rest.

I don't often totally disagree with you, DS but this one is real iffy.

What really happened?

Scandinavians and Teutons to the upper midwest.  Major cities were ghetto after ghetto, and each in turn, the english, irish, italian, and so on each in there turn, one cycling out to the melting pot, and the next one moving until we got to the 'negro', they overwhelmingly had to sit and grind it out thru quite a few cycles, while some ethnicities cycled in and out around them, they bobbed like corks, and still a bunch of them sit there today.

I think that maybe starting in the 50's and not with any explosion did we start to see any meaningful melt in that pot....and it truely is not so very far along in my estimation.

But it is not a violent disagreement in any case.

It was intentioned as a rhetorical and very general statement, not directed at any person or group.

But please expound on your misinterpretation in any event, when you have the time.

I meant just what I posted.

Your post was in reply to mine. I am a native american.

I dont think I can get any clearer than that.

FR

FR

This post is not in response to the previous post

Sorry, I forgot to put the "FR" thing in front of what I said.

I estimated that the general audience would be able to discern by content and context that a post having nothing to do with the immediately prior post but rather with the several posts by DYB, DS, and Aylee, so named in the post concerning here, that the post in fact was addressing and commenting on the posts thus identified, and not to the circumstantially immediate post.

I assumed too much, sorry.

PS

Aside from the small issue that "Welcome to   - - - - - -  " is a standard rhetorical device, meaning something along the lines of "this is how it is," not that one is actually welcoming or inviting a person into a place.

Blending in does not mean you cannot maintain diversity.

We would not have St. Patrick's Day and Columbus Day if people did not try to maintain their diversity.

I have lived in Cleveland, Chicago, and Fort Lauderdale and they all have very strong ethnic neighborhoods.

In each of those cities there are bars, restaurants, even department stores where English is spoken but it is not the primary language.

DYB, diversity yes! Letting the *third world* into this country no!

I find it a bit rich that descendants of immigrants now say no to immigration, for it strikes me as a case of I'm Alright Jack

The invitation to come to America was extended to your ancestors for a better life, so why do you find it so hard to reciprocate, are you not American ?

If the boot were on the other foot, and you were living under oppression or in abject poverty, would you stay in that country or try to move elsewhere for a better life ?

Aneirin, and just how long do you think that can continue? In 1900 we had what, 50 million people?
We're a mature country of 300 million plus now and don't need immigration anymore, there's *no jobs!* Thanks to this "global economy" all the good manufacturing jobs went overseas.
That was then this is now. We don't have to let *anyone*into this country!
All the third world knows when it comes to the U.S. is, "gimme, gimme, gimme!"
The fairy tale days of starry eyed immigrants on wooden ships entering New York harbor and gazing whistfully at the statue of liberty are o-v-e-r!
You're living a fantasy Buddy.
Oh, and we don't use *buggy whips* anymore either we use car keys now and "Camelot" shouldn't ever be mentioned in the same sentance as that criminal, disgusting, Irish Clan of theives, murderers, child molestors, cheats, borderline retards and low i.q morons from Boston!
The Kennedys! Now THERE's one HELL of an argument against anymore immigration!
"That was than, this is now"...Didn't you quote George Washington just yesterday in support of your xenophobic views ?
You really do need to make up your mind.

That is not true. I'm sure I've read somewhere, that scientists recommend diversity when it comes to genes, and reproduction. M

LOL
Status diversity.
Are you afraid the wealth will trickle down, if folks who appear different, decide to mate?
Status is useless, when you combine heart disease genes, with heart disease genes, or cancer history genes.

Non-functional differences like race, language, age, sex, culture and even whether someone is homosexual. Ya know, those things that people want to celebrate.
