Had you done so, you would have realised I share the same position on this issue as your President, numerous US politicians on both sides, NATO, Pres Karzai and many others international figures. quote:
i fail to understand what you sharing a view with others have to do with that veiw blaming the preacher and giving the killers a pass. That point was made in response to a specific hysterical claim that I was "[on]side with terrorists". quote:
YOu even compaired them to kids picking up a loaded gun in a schoolyard. Do you really think the k/illers are childlike innocents who didn't know the gun was loaded? I didn't make that comparison. I did describe the killers as being (most likely) illiterate peasants, living in 13th century circumstances without any experience or awareness outside that environment. This is emphasised by their choice to attack a UN office, not even a religious or military organisation. Why choose the UN? Even within Afghanistan there is no linear cause-and-effect chain. If you feel it's appropriate to apply 21st century Western standards of probity to such people or situations - go for it. Please expect to be continually disappointed. On this thread, I have previously described the actions of the mob as not sane not defensible ugly but predictable. How anyone could get "giving the killers a free pass" out of that is beyond me. My position is that there are two evil parties in this sad episode - Jones, for knowingly setting off a chain of events that would result (most likely) in loss of innocent life. For his own grubby political motives I might add. On the Afghani side, I blame primarily the mullahs who whipped their followers in a murderous frenzy for equally grubby political motives. I see little difference between Jones' and the mullahs' motives or actions. Both were evil. Mix these two together, add a bunch of illiterate peasants in a craze of religious self-righteous fervour and the outcome is inevitable. The killers must be held responsible for their actions. Equally so should the instigators of the whole sorry episode. I have never questioned Jones' right to do what he did. I have questioned his sanity, his judgement and his morals. My first post (#29) is the most detailed statement of my position. Please check it out. I am still waiting for a satisfactory answer to my main question, which is: Why would any sane person burn a book knowing that the doing so would endanger an unknown number of innocent lives? We all agree that the killings are outrageous and indefensible. That doesn't entitle us to simplistic answers or responses. If we wish to avoid a re-run, we need to understand fully the factors that contributed to the tragedy. To me, the logic of Jones apologists echo drunk drivers blaming the accidents they cause on alcohol - neatly denying responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
