juliaoceania -> Have you ever become a fan of a show years after it was cancelled? (5/1/2011 10:51:30 PM)

I have netflix instant streaming on my TV. Because I abhor commercials this is all I watch. I discovered a few series I never even heard about (I am not a huge TV watcher because of commercials). One of them is Dexter (I love that show), but another one of them is a show that was cancelled, the X fFiles. I always wished I had the time to keep up with the X files, but since when it was popular I was too busy working and raising a little one, I am really enjoying being able to watch it from the pilot through the end, with everything in order....

I was wondering if anyone became a complete and total fan of something years after it was cancelled? It is kinda sad, because I have no one to talk to about the show or share it with!

Firefly.  I never watched it when it was on, but now I'm a huge fan.  Of the single season of it, and the one movie.  Woe is me!

Back in the day I was too young to get Seinfeld's humour, but in recent years it has become my favourite sitcom.

This will also sound gay, but I like Friends.  Of course I have a celebrity lust for Courtney Cox so go figure.

I love South Park now, although it is still popular, I came to it only a couple of years ago. I now know almost every episode by name.... that makes me a complete geek, but it is true... ouch

Man, I'm the poster boy for this. Years after everybody else, I got into: Lost; Rome I & II; Friends; Torchwood; Survivors; ... I could go on and on. I don't know why. IT'S A SICKNESS, I NEED HELP!

juliaoceania -> RE: Have you ever become a fan of a show years after it was cancelled? (5/1/2011 11:15:54 PM)

No, you are just busy and have little time for TV

My problem is commercials..... I can't stand them. I avoid them so assiduously that when people ask me if I have seen a certain commercial I almost always do not know what they are talking about. It takes 15 minutes off my life per hour to sit through commercials. I would rather wait for it to come out on dvd, or stream it, or TIVO it for later, and these are all strategies I have used to avoid ads.

I also haaaate commercials.  Most of the tv watching we do is from DVDs I bought and from seasons of old shows.

My list of faves that I didn't have time to watch when they were playing on tv:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
NCIS

Stargate SG1
Stargate Atlantis

MASH
Pokemon cartoons, complete seasons, lol
Monk
Firefly
Star Trek TNG (I was only able to watch the 4th season on tv, and now I have all of the seasons)

I never got to watch Voyager and DS9 on tv, and plan to buy the entire seasons someday.  I bought a few VHS tapes of these years ago at the mall and loved them.  I was buying the books at K-mart, lol.

I do not get cable, dish, or Netflix or whatever, but use that money to buy DVDs.  I like to see what I want to see, when I want to see it.

I did that with Red Dwarf, hell I don't even know if it was ever on in the US, but it's funny if you like pure "dumb" sorta Three Stooges type comedy. Nonsensical plots, and situations.

The it crowd is funny (still on air I think, british again).

Oh, It's always sunny in philadelphia, I didn't start watching that until season 2 or 3, but watched them all since then, again not cancelled.

I came across a US comedy show 'Arrested Development', as funny as they come.

It wasn't aired in England. It was given a top review in one of our newspapers, so I downloaded it from somewhere.

Why they only did 2 series is beyond me because it's easily the funniest show I've seen from the US.

Futurama.  I started watching it on the Cartoon Network late at night when I couldn't sleep and became hooked.
Some new episodes have been made but haven't seen any lately.  I still enjoy the re-runs.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have you ever become a fan of a show years after it was cancelled? (5/2/2011 3:32:07 AM)

Oh yeahhhh - "Deadwood". Caught bits and pieces of it channel-surfing over the years and it didn't really appeal. Then one night, I couldn't sleep and it was just coming on so, wtf, I watched the whole episode. That changed EVERYTHING...!

Now I've got all 3 seasons on dvd, and in danger of wearing them out prematurely. But, only 3...???? I hope that wasn't about more stupid moralising that Americans sooooo like to self-flagellate about. As memories of the superb, top rating but still canned after one season, "American Gothic", come flooding back....

And yeah, "Dexter" looks a promising sociopath, too. Yet to watch an entire episode but bought the first 3 seasons because of that promise....

Focus.

I second the Arrested Development recommendation.

And I'll add "The Wire" as essential viewing.

And The Venture Bros...

And Archer, which is good, but isn't as good as The Venture Bros.

You people watch waaay too much t.v.! I thought I was bad. I don't even know half of these shows.

I do agree with Sex & the City though. :)

Everything else that I was a fan of, was at the time it was first aired, so that doesn't apply to this thread.

I didn't think MASH was technically cancelled.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have you ever become a fan of a show years after it was cancelled? (5/2/2011 4:45:42 AM)

Although I have to admit there are some MASH episodes that annoy the hell out of me. Alan Alda is not high on my list....okay, most of the time he annoys the hell out of me. Some of the episodes where he made it allllllll about him, I just want to reach through the tv screen and shake the drama queen out of him. Then bitch slap him for good measure.

SassySouthrnLady -> RE: Have you ever become a fan of a show years after it was cancelled? (5/2/2011 4:45:46 AM)

I've done this a lot too. Pretty much for the same reasons. I HATE wasting time with commercials. Of course, kids, work, school, etc kept me hopping for several years.

I love X-files. Watched episodes while it was still on the air, but never in a 'regular' order. I've got some on dvd, then lots of late night watching when I could catch it.

Others for me:

Angel
Sex in the City
Started watching Bones and Desperate Housewives a few seasons in, but have gone back and caught up. These I just Tivo and ff thru the commercials.
