There isn't even a competition. Lennon's only GREAT lyrics were to Imagine. Most of the Beatles' best songs had lyrics that were only so-so. Lennon could write better singles than Waters... but Pink Floyd didn't do singles. Lennon is terribly overrated as a lyricist and was only the second-best guitarist in the band.

Well, "so-so" depends on what you consider their best songs, I suppose. Truthfully except for Blackbird and WMGGW I don't know who wrote most of the lyrics. But, "For No One", "In My Life" and "Here There and Everywhere" are pretty damn good lyrics from those other two guys.

You have a point, though when I think of my favorites I'm usually going with "Because", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", and though I may be branded a heretic by some for it, "Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite" is one of my favorite of their songs.

The best Beatles song lyrically though is probably Eleanor Rigby... a McCartney song.

There are actually people on here that think The Wall sucks? Are you fuckin' kidding me? It's pretty much one great song after another, most of which have gotten airplay which is an astonishing feat in itself considering it's a double album and equally astonishing is the fact that it sold over 20 million copies when double albums were/are more expensive. It spent 15 weeks atop the U.S. charts during 1980 and is often regarded as the best-selling double album ever. It has been certified 23x platinum by RIAA, for sales of 11.5 million copies in U.S. alone. If an album that was that successful sucks then I must be on crack. This masterpiece has brilliant guitar playing and vocals by David Gilmour, sound effects placed just in the right places,a perfect combination of both rocking and mellow songs Roger Waters exceptional and cool lyrics,etc.etc. Roger Waters is a God in the rock world and Pink Floyd's track record along with Waters The Wall concerts pretty much confirm his genius.Allow me to mention just a few songs..The Show Must Go On,Hey You,Young Lust,Comfortably Numb,Goodbye Blue Sky,The Trial,Mother,Another Brick In The Wall,One Of My Turns,Nobody Home,Is There Anybody Out There,Run Like Hell,The Thin Ice...These songs suck??? Get real.

Holy fucking shit.... Willbur is a Floyd-o-phile and loves Roger Waters?

I knew there was common ground somewhere. I will now admit that you have at least one redeeming quality.

Pink Floyd... tearing down walls since 1979.

Did you happen to see the recent Wall tour live or have you only seen the torrent version?

Live twice, including front row center, with a PICC line still in and IV tubes hanging out from under my t-shirt (not the arm with my DSOTM tattoo, thank goodness). Should have been 3 times but I was in the hospital.

Ive been to every PF/RW/DG tour, most multiple times, since 1970 at Stony Brook University.

As much as it pains me to say.... I envy you a hell of a lot.

The only thing I found from watching the iShoot video that I missed in my seats though was when the bricks were shooting out during Run Like Hell... it wasn't impressive looking at all from my vantage point then blew my mind when watching the video.

I've decided if I'm fortunate enough for Waters to do the tour one more time, I'm definitely getting the floor seats.

I can see adding ER to my others, and I did forget Because (which sounds incredible in "Love"), but GH's lyrics still are the best Beatles imo.

I saw Floyd in the Orange Bowl ca 1986 and again in Joe Robbie Stadium (dolphin stadium) about 88.

If I make any money in the WSO Poker this year I will get to a show in Europe. Front row was awesome but only for the ability to see faces and guitar work up close. The projections were nearly useless from there. Fortunately I saw it from the first set of risers off the floor first, and got most of that. Still a lot going on even from there though. The one that iShoot iEdit misses badly is One of My Turns (I think?) with the colors dripping down.

Now I will have to watch it for about the 300th time tonight!

There are rumors that he will come back to the US after Europe, but Im not counting on it.

At one point, I swore that I was only going to marry a woman who knew that Animals was the best album Floyd did, but I broke the oath. The wife prefers Wish You Were Here, and I've been able to live with that.

An ex and I had One of These Days as "our song." In hindsight, it should have been an easy omen to read.

Hey You, Young Lust, Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb. Outstanding stuff that accounts for about one side or 25%. I always felt the rest of album was pretty forgettable. Hootie and the Blowfish sold a shitload of their first album. Saturday Night Fever (a double album) outsold The Wall. So much for quoting sales figures. Do Pink Floyd suck? Of course they do not. Over the entire spectrum of their catalog are they overrated? I think so. But it's music. Art. It's all in the eye or ear of the beholder.

Joe Robbie was well before that because I was still teaching HS and coaching. Last year of that was 89.

Thinking back. Joe Robbie was after '92 because I was working in a different lab and I remember who My coworkers were when I was trying to win free tickets.

Fr~

I saw Pink Floyd 3 times. Dark Side of the Moon in 1972, at the Auditorium Theater, where the ushers kept asking us to "please, put that out"

Wish you were Here in 1975 at the Milwaukee summer fest. I over medicated a bit for that one.

And Animals in 1977 at Soldier Field. The best was DSOTM.

Sometimes, it is not so bad to be so old.

Then why none since 77? :)

Jeffff -> RE: Pink Floyd re-issue (5/12/2011 8:39:13 PM)

In my mind, after Waters left, it wasn't the same band.

This may be a bad analogy, but kind of like seeing the Beach Boys without Brian Wilson.

I am sure they were fine shows, just not.........what I wanted to see.

However, the FLaming Lips are going to preform DSOTM here this summer.

That appeals to me in a twisted kind of way.

PF without Roger was OK, would have been better in smaller venues, but then Aussie PF might be too close to them. What youve actually missed is RW's tours...not the same band...a better one in every case but 2.

If they do as well as they did at Bonnaroo, you won't be disappointed by them. I consider DSotM the holy grail of art, so for me to say that it means something. I mean, every song is inferior to the original, but it's a good performance.

The worst thing about post-Waters Floyd is that they had people outside the band write the lyrics (King Crimson and ELP did it but hey... at least he was exclusive to them during the respective periods). That's pretty pathetic to me (especially when I actually enjoyed every song penned by Richard Wright a lot). As Roger put it, those albums were fair forgeries of a Pink Floyd album. Enjoyable, but not transcendent.
