Hawking's latest comments go beyond those laid out in his 2010 book, The Grand Design, in which he asserted that there is no need for a creator to explain the existence of the universe. The book provoked a backlash from some religious leaders, including the chief rabbi, Lord Sacks, who accused Hawking of committing an "elementary fallacy" of logic.

Good old Lord/Professor  Hawking Life of the fucking party. You wanna empty out a munch fast just bring him along.

If I were at that munch I would wanna be sitting next to him... but I am just geeky like that

if what SS says is correct that does not say much for kniksters LOL

Me 3 I would be competing with you for his time!

That depends on what you mean by "created" and "destroyed". Matter CAN be created out of the vacuum (the standard definition of nothing).

absolute void to some-thing, and some-thing back to absolute void.  that would defy physics.

I'm always interested in what he has to say. He's doing some work here in Canada at the University of Waterloo.

I just had an idea that they should give the man, Stephen Hawking, his own reality show, I think it would get excellent ratings. A lot of people are interested in what he has to say and what he's doing.

I anticipate she would provide a diplomatic answer that would be acceptable to everyone just as she did when questioned about Sarah Palin.

Organized religion is slowly dying out as people become more educated. Religion evolved as people learned that there wasn't an angry god living in the volcano making it erupt, for example. There seem to be more people these days who simply call themselves "spiritual."Which, at first glance, may seem less thought out than believing in dogma. But, it is probably just part of the loosening of the grip of needing to believe that something supernatural is in charge and everything is going to be okay.

Stephen Hawking is a brilliant thinker and to dismiss what he says because you want hold on to a fantasy is illogical. But you all have the right to do it. I THINK (not believe) heaven is false because it is based strictly on wishful thinking and, AT BEST, anecdotal evidence. Atheist don't have to prove there's no heaven anymore than we have to prove that there are no pixies.

We are comfortable saying that we don't know. We follow the evidence. I'll be happier than a pig in shit to find that there is more life after physical death. But, not a shred of credible evidence exists to indicate that it does.

I think its a good thing for lay people to realize that when mathematicians talk about universes its only abstract constructs not physical universes.   Otherwise lay people walk around with staring into space contemplating physical universes and other bullshit like time travel.

I believe there is more to the working human machine. I also believe the end of a working body, is not the end of everything. I don't know if there is a heaven, purgatory, or hell, but I feel there is more to a person, after his burial.

Steven Hawkin is a very interesting man, speaking of this absolute, given his frail position, almost, as if he escaped death for a reason. M

I have only read your post and the OP, so I cannot comment on anyone else's.

How do you know it's a fantasy? The reality is, no one knows unequivocally what happens after we die. Stephen Hawking is entitled to his opinion, but it's just that. You say "we follow the evidence", but to even hint that we know enough to state absolutely there is no heaven, there is no God, there is no afterlife is a rather arrogant statement to make. Science may know a lot, but there is so much that is unknown. What if there is another plane (or planes) of existence or another dimension that has not been detected because the current scientific theories and knowledge are too limited to do so? Consider all of the scientific advancements of the last 100 years. Or consider one of the more current theories that challenges Einstein's theory of relativity - a theory long held as true. What if other evidence becomes known in the future to challenge current theories. We just cannot say with any degree of certainty what will happen.

To say we die and turn to dust is one possibility and one I had once considered. But now? I don't believe it to be so and my reasoning has nothing to do with fairy tales. ;)

Of course, there's the whole problem of perception, and just what happens when the brain finally shuts down and you stop perceiving anything, but that's a philosophical issue rather than a metaphysical one, despite the comment earlier in the thread about NDEs.

So you favour the solid state theory over the big bang, then?
