Why?

Why should I have respect for the office?

It is just a government position, but somehow we have decided over the years to make it a position of royalty, exactly the opposite of what was intended.

Yup, the president is "the hired help."

whats to be in awe about a man who is nothing more than the executive minister of a cestie que vie constructive trust?

sunshinemiss said nothing of being in awe of the president. She was referring to name calling.

Why shouldnt they call them names?

Who is this mysterious "they"? And sunshinemess already answered that question by saying "It merely makes you look like you have no class."

are you trying to make me puke all over my keyboard?

That's rather over dramatic to say, isn't it? It isn't as if you would actually vomit over someone else's opinion.

the President is a symbolic head of state

A symbolic head of state has no authority, so the American president cannot be described this way.

I find it somewhat amusing (but mostly predictable) that most of the ones answering this post are those who frequently employ name-calling. They are also completely missing the OP's point.

Edited for a correction. ;)

I was wondering how long it would take someone to come out here and call a government servant a LEADER!!!

Dog leads owner! LMAO

Naming them leaders is a statement of fact, you've empowered them to create laws which you must abide by. They are also leaders in the sense that they are setting the agenda by choosing societies priorities. Most normal people thus refer to them as political leaders. There are civil servants and there are political leaders, don't confuse the two.

juliaoceania -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/21/2011 6:18:58 PM)

I called Bush names, and I do not care what people call Obama...

Do you think this is new? It isn't new at all. We have a first amendment right to call public figures whatever we like, when that is suspended, let me know.

Owner59 -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/21/2011 6:30:05 PM)

Name calling is only relevant or stings if there`s truth to it.

Like people calling President Obama dumb.Everyone knows that`s not the case so it`s laughable, not serious, not sincere.

The critisism "president mission accomplished" got was quite sincere, heartfelt and based in truth.

Bullshit, O59. It's like the classic tale of LBJ wanting to call an opponent a pig fucker, just to make him deal with such a charge. It's also a convenient crutch, for those who don't have an argument to make, or a position to take.

Most of the name calling I've seen simply makes the name caller look juvenile.

While you may not like what President Obama does / doesn't do, your action of calling him names does not harm anyone. It merely makes you look like you have no class.

Bless your heart, sweet-thing. [:)]  I wish I could say it would do any good.  I've tried for quite some time to appeal to people's better natures with regard to how they refer to our President.

With how my pleas have fallen on deaf ears, I've concluded the perpetrators indeed have no class.

When it comes to public figures, I have no problem calling them names. I usually do that amongst my close friends and confidants...

But as far as being juvenile, the older I get, the more I appreciate the ability to be so. Being grown up and dignified is pretty fucking boring.

Care to fully elaborate on this ?

He's talking about Bill Clintons honorary knighthood. No difference between that knighthood and the one which George Bush and Ronald Reagan received.. so a "shrug, so what" sort of attitude is perfectly acceptable as a response.

ebonywarqueen -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/21/2011 7:15:32 PM)

I have noticed the name calling also and while I agree its their right, i also agree it makes the ones doing the name calling look bad. Of course I feel the same way about posters who call other posters names based on mere differences of opinion. If they offend me personally I hide all their posts and refuse to engage them any longer. If insulting the President bothered me I would do the same to THOSE posters as well.

Sanity -> RE: Use of insulting names (5/21/2011 7:16:15 PM)

I try hard to resist the temptation to sink as low as so many leftists did in those years, and currently I call Obama either "the president" or just "Obama" and I leave it at that

I get pissed off when people show disrespect to Obama, and then realize that I did the same for Bush.  Eye opener.

You know what cracks me up about that... it is the hypocrisy of those on this thread that decry those who called Bush names, and even those who were friendly to them, and now they sit on their hands and say NOTHING about the blatantly racist names that Obama is called, and the racist jokes about Obama... etc etc etc....

Some of those very people are posting on this thread....
