"Now we are going to argue degrees?

If I pull myself into the mud to my ankles, how can I bitch about someone else slinging mud? "

Because the debate is a bit disingenuous. What I've seen is that when the Republicans win- there's less bellyaching. When the Democrats are in- then it's both sides are slinging mud. Or its that government is always the problem- the same mantra that was being chanted during the Hoover administration.

Tazzy,

That's why nothing happens.  Look at this thread.  We have people gathering on their side of the line claiming the other guy has more mud on his hands.  "I'm innocent because they are dirtier"

Heaven forbid we just cut the crap and try and move the nation forward.

Hmm.. not quite sure I am following.

You are saying when the Republicans are in charge, there are no complaints... about?

But when the Dems are in charge, everyone is complaining?

Are you referring to President or Congress or both?

Im sorta lost here, mind a lifeline?

See, thats where my mind is too. We have enough blame to go around for everyone. Isnt it time we all stood up and said..

We have had enough? Lets work on getting our houses in order, together.

Tazz,

I think it was pretty telling when MM started the thread for ideas on the problems.  Notice that some of the biggest name callers and bitchers had nothing to say?

So, you just assume history started with you becoming aware of it, RML?
Never mind. Rhetorical question.

Flco, are you trying to deny Reaan's re-election victory in 1984? If not, shut up, because you obviously have nothing to contribute on a discussion of campaign strategy.

Lucy, you are damn right about people remembering Reagan. Why do you think the party keeps looking for another one like him, and Obama would love to get anywhere near those sorts of numbers?

Perfect advice for you, please take it

We were just speaking of people who have nothing to add but crap, thanks for giving a prime example.

That would be the only reference I made to Reagan  Please tell me how that fits in with your response.  As usual your reading comprehension  needs work and your only purpose is to prove you can be an ass.

You fit right into the conversation Tazzy and I were having about people only interested in proving the other side is dirty rather than actually trying to do something constructive.

And what was your contribution in there, Flco? Cut some wasteful military program you can't even identify, make it impossible for the elected representatives most familiar with the conditions on the ground to target the services and spending that are needed in their districts, and term limits, which just gives the unelected lifetime bureaucrats a shorter window where their delusions and institutionalized inefficiencies can be scrutinized.

Hi Tazzy

No- the bellyaching about gov't not working or always being the problem is muted when the Republicans are in charge- they bellyache only when the Democrats are in power. Democrats bellyache no matter who's in charge- because if its a Dem president- he's trying to work with the Republicans and throwing somebody under the bus- while when the Republicans are in charge-well, the country's going to hell.

While the argument that both sides have mud on their hand is seductive, its also failed as a means of trying to make progress. I wish it weren't so, but the problem is the gross distortions of the record that is now passing for news. There is no responsible news organization on the right saying- gee-we screwed up.

Look at the deficit issues. Bush II inherited an economy chugging along reasonably (true, on a downward trend, but it'd been doing pretty good previously) along with a budget surplus that was paying down the deficit. While he was in power- the deficit wasn't a problem. Nor was deregulation.

Now we've had a fiscal meltdown and the folks on Wall St still think that they didn't do anything wrong- that they make so much money because they're smarter than everybody else. (Listened to NPR last night.) They also can't stand Obama- which is one of the most egregious cases of biting the hand that feeds you that I've ever seen. Those SOBs show no signs of remorse- no signs that they did anything wrong- and that Congress basically had to bail out the industry or there would be Armageddon (which is probably true)- so things can go back to business as usual. Yet the folks on Wall St. scream about gov't bailouts of other industries.

If there were a responsible news organization with a conservative viewpoint- they'd be calling for a balanced budget, pointing out that regulations evolved for a reason and that getting rid of them might be risky, or dismantling mega banks since too big to fail is too big to exist. And the conservative news organization would be calling Bush's tax cuts irresponsible- never mind the wars. But perhaps most importantly, the conservative news organization would face up to the fact that tax cuts and two wars grew the deficit, so that when a financial crisis reared its ugly head, there were few options other than increasing the deficit alarmingly. These aren't leftist ideas- these are good conservative ideals.

The problem as I see it is that the Republican record is grossly distorted by the news organization on the right. Gross distortion isn't conservatism by the way- it's just lies. So the Republicans claim that their record is being attacked by the "leftist" media- but the reality is that by any objective measure- they've screwed the pooch in a big way and they haven't owned up to it. This means that they want to continue the pooch screwing...

I don't see how progress can be made in this fashion. If you want to make progress, you need to agree on some basic facts- and that's just not happening because the right wing media is all pretty much under one corporate umbrella. This is a total disaster- we no longer have a free press- and there's no bridges between the parties. So working together in practice has meant that the Democratic administration and Senate has kowtowed to a Republican majority in the House and we're not getting meaningful reform or realistic budgets. And we're definitely living in a time where some hard choices have to be made.

Sam

I agree with all you said. Its time we, the public, stood up and said enough... to both sides.

Some honest, basic truths.

The deficit is out of control. How do we fix it?

Health care is out of control. How do we fix that?

DoD is saying they are being given money they dont want. Why? Actually, why doesnt matter anymore. If DoD doesnt want it, take it back.

SS is going under.. slowly but surely. The money has been borrowed heavily. Its time to pay that back. How?

It no longer matters who is to blame, which administration did what.... what matters is fixing the problem.

Enough of the rhetoric.

Its time for solutions.

And what did it have to do with your response?  Your response didn't address what I said ,  it went off on something different about election strategy.

Not a shot,  it is a statement.  The failure of Reaganomics caused Bush Senior to lose reelection.

I have nothing but respect for Bush Sr.  He did what was needed at the time rather than what would pander to votes.

Right, Sambo. Now that budget the last Democrat Congress put together was a shining example of how to do it right, huh? Oh wait. Never mind. They didn't even try to pass a budget, did they?

One guarantee for the '12 GOP field. George W. Bush won't be in it, no matter how desperate the left is try to claim he is.

This guy is also a possibility.

Saying He’s Not Running Puts Perry in a Good Spot

It’s Rick Perry versus the nincompoops. That’s not a slap at the Republican field, but at the political chatterers who just can’t or won’t believe the Texas governor when he says he doesn’t want to run for president.

The governor is in a great position. His name is in the conversation, but he doesn’t have to trek to Iowa and New Hampshire, and he doesn’t have to open a federal campaign account, and he doesn’t have to fend off attacks from declared candidates. He’s in place if there’s a draft, but not at risk of an embarrassing loss. How can you lose a race you’re not running?

Mr. Perry checks off a lot of the boxes for an ideal Republican candidate. It might gall the late Molly Ivins to hear this, but as she used to say, he’s got some Elvis. He’s good-looking and telegenic, great at working a crowd, both at the handshake level and at the microphone. He actually enjoys campaign hokum. He has become a good public speaker. (You should have seen him when he was running for agriculture commissioner in 1990; there stands the proof that he’s teachable.) He’s good with the fiscal conservatives, the social conservatives, the Tea Partiers and the Christians, and he subdued the establishment Republicans in Texas by easily defeating United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison in the 2010 gubernatorial primary. He’s from a big Southern and Western state (we’re a little conflicted about it) with a lot of electoral votes and, more importantly, with a mother lode of conservative campaign money.

Oh I'm sure you'll get full credit, O59. The accountants ought to be able to figure out just how disastrous that borrow and spending spree was in time for the next election. You guys will have made Bush look thrifty

But no worries! It kept unemployment under 8%, right? And our big "summer of recovery" that's a year late and counting, must be right around the corner by now?

And this guy Jon Kyl

Who's Missing From the G.O.P. Race?
Big Egos Need Not Apply
Linda Chavez, the director of public liaison in the Reagan White House and the G.O.P. Senate nominee from Maryland in 1986, is a syndicated columnist and conservative commentator.

So who’s left? I’d like to throw out a name rarely, if ever, mentioned: Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona. He’s retiring after three terms and has shown no inclination to pursue higher office, but he’d make a terrific president. He has served with distinction in the Senate leadership, has real depth on foreign policy and domestic issues, and is a man of impeccable integrity with a great family.

I disagree with Senator Kyl on immigration policy — but unlike some of his colleagues, he never stooped to the unfortunate anti-immigrant rhetoric that has damaged the G.O.P. among Hispanic voters. And given President Obama’s lackluster performance on immigration reform, the Democrats are going to have a tough time with Hispanic voters, who may choose to stay home on Election Day.

It says something about the process when some of the best-qualified potential candidates won’t even consider running. You need a big ego to declare your candidacy, but it’s the last thing the country needs in a president.

"Right, Sambo. Now that budget the last Democrat Congress put together was a shining example of how to do it right, huh? Oh wait. Never mind. They didn't even try to pass a budget, did they? "

Yeah- they did, last time I checked, but the Republicans are playing nuclear politics and standing in a bloc. From my perspective, it's clear that the only thing that satisfies them is when they're running the show- otherwise its filibuster time and gridlock. As I pointed out previously- there is no ownership of their errors.

Tazzy-

The Democrats have certainly not been blameless-and the high cost of health care along with the unsustainable path of the entitlement programs can be laid at their feet. Small business owners clearly see the high cost of these programs and I think thats been one of the reasons that so many businesses fail- as well as too few businesses being created.

Overall- I'd suggest that the Republicans figure out how they took a guy who was at least was reasonably honest like McCain- who had a good record as a senator-and turned him into such a lousy presidential candidate. His first VP pick was Joe Leiberman out of CT. I'm not crazy about Leiberman, but he was an interesting choice and would have moved his candidacy towards the center. Instead, the powers that be shot him down, and in a fit of pique, he picked that vicious airhead Sarah Palin. At that point, I figured he didn't want to win- the Republicans have been pretty disgusting as of late and he knows it. Because if they do the same thing again- they're bound to lose. I wouldn't count on that majority remaining in the House either.

I always felt it was to landblast the ticket.. meaning the choice was intentional. I cannot imagine anyone who knew just how bad the economy was going to tank would have wanted to win the election.

Not saying McCain didnt want to win, saying the RNC didnt want too.
