The line that stood out for me was (Democrat Senate Majority Leaser Harry Reid) accused "the libertarian, tea-party darling" (Rand Paul) of “political grandstanding” and trying to protect terrorists for opposing the measure.

quote:

Patriot Act clears House, Senate

Capping a week of political bickering and parliamentary delays, the House joined the Senate
on Thursday to pass a four-year extension of key provisions of the Patriot Act that was set to expire at midnight.

Because President Barack Obama was traveling in Europe, he signed the bill into law using an autopen, a machine that replicates the president’s signature.

The House voted 250-153 to renew three parts of the counter-terrorism surveillance law. Thirty-one House Republicans joined most Democrats in opposing the extension, while 54 Democrats supported it.

Hours earlier, the bill cleared the Senate on a 72-23 vote, with 19 Democrats and four Republicans voting no, mostly over concerns the Patriot Act violates personal privacy and civil liberties.

The week-long fight over parliamentary procedures and amendments left a trail of bruised egos and bad feelings in the upper chamber.

Freshman Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a Patriot Act opponent who had used procedural tactics to delay a final vote on the bill for much of the week, eventually worked out a deal with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to get votes on two of his amendments – but not before Reid accused the libertarian, tea-party darling of “political grandstanding” and trying to protect terrorists.

An admission that the bill is non-vetoable and that the fuckheads on the rabid right are ruining this country is all.

But you are free to pretend you can't count two thirds in both houses.

Its sort of sad and pathetic you cant count and have to ascribe this to magic.

An admission that all of their hateful rhetoric demonizing Bush and Cheney, et al. for their effort in the war on terror and for liberating millions and millions of brown people in the Middle East was just a lot of hot air

It was all about politics, all along

Senators Feinstein and Reid pushed hard for an extension. They're Democrats. Senator Wyden brought the Feds' "secret interpretation" to light. He's also a Democrat. Republican Senator Rand Paul is keeping the Patriot Act in the headlines. He also forced the establishment Republicans to reveal that that they value federal power more than the Second Amendment. I think this issue is better defined as Statist vs. Constitutionalist, not left vs. right.

I'm not as worried about Obama being Bush II or a 'Clintonesque Republican' as much as I am worried that the bulk of "freedom" Republicans are still playing the terror card while most Dems do not.

You have this unique way of taking a continuing Republican civil liberties failure and turning it into being the Democrats fault.

That's bullshit.

Yeah, they are hanging over the 60% in both houses.  Now all Obama would have to do is veto that and we got a hue and cry that hes soft on terrorism, and the rabid right takes it to the street to froth up the voting idiots.  The few Republicans with morals will definitely throw in to override a veto, cuz they aint that fuckin moral or stupid.

Why fight a done deal?  It is the will of the people, obviously.

This sickens me when I see this extended without major changes. It should only include non citizens and anti American open border groups for routine monitoring.

The real reason neither party wants to eliminate or modify this to exclude legal citizens is because if something happens that included legal Muslim citizens then they will get blamed for it. It's just like cancelling NAFTA. Everyone wants to cancel it, but the economy is so shaky that if we cancelled it and the economy collapsed then the party who cancelled it will get the blame. It doesn't even matter if the economy was going to collapse to begin with.

By the way, we can cancel NAFTA by gradually prohibiting imports from companies who went to Mexico first, and do this over a 10 year period. First companies to leave will be the first to have their imports blocked. Last company to leave will be the last to have their imports blocked.

Did Republicans ever oppose it, as a party? No.

Theyre not the hypocrites...

Heres the part where the silence from the left seems the loudest -

Harry Reid (D-Nev.)  accused Rand Paul of trying to protect terrorists for opposing it

(I can hear a pin drop from across the room)

And Obama signed it

(Nope - I still hear nothing)

Perhaps you could include a credible citation somewhere where 'democrats' roundly opposed the patriot act, and demonstrate this hypocrisy with facts.

Seems some democrats opposed it all along, some republicans opposed it all along, some democrats were for it all along, and some republicans were for it all along.

You haven't got anything.  The majority of republicans and some democrats are executing the will of the people, right?

BTW, I am dead set AGAINST most of it.

The "Patriot" Act is a travesty, pure and simple.

I don't care who signs/votes for it. It spits on the Constitution.

Sanity's History on the Patriot Act

I am wondering, why are you crying about this? According to your historic stance on the Patriot Act you do not really give a rat's ass about it.

I haven't voted for anyone supported the Patriot Act ever. I will continue on not voting for people who have voted for it. For example, I haven't voted for Diane Feinstein since she voted for it and Iraq. I did not support Hillary Clinton because she voted for the war in Iraq.

I will not vote for anyone who supports the Patriot Act.

I wonder why you haven't been railing against the Patriot Act in the past. I wonder why you are so suddenly against it. Your posting history indicates a certain level of denouncing those against it as somehow funny because they feared their rights might be taken away by it....why the sudden change in position by you?

May I also point out, if you think that the Patriot Act was a good idea under Bush, why are you suddenly against it under Obama? If you think the Patriot Act protected us then, well, we are still in a War Against Terror...right? I would think you would laud everyone who voted for it and supported it,instead of saying things like "neener neener neener, Obama voted for it too".. I mean, if someone does something you support, why does it matter what political party they come from.

I notice that a lot from you, bashing Obama for doing things you supported when Bush was in charge... it makes you seem a little hypocritical to me.

Many democrats originally supported this farce of an act... this is NOTHING new.

Feinstein pushed for renewal of the Patriot Act ? Not hardly. He was the only senator out of 100 to vote against the original Patriot Act. He was also voted out of office last November and not able to support or oppose any bill.
