i don't mind when people shorten my name. i'm not particularly fond of my real name (or at least not the way most people pronounce it -- i can't really explain it, haha) so i got into the habit of shortening it at an early age. so if someone types LBP, or lilly, or bopeep, or whatever, i don't care. i don't use my real name with people until i've talked to them for a smidge.
if a person has a sig line that says "please refer to me X way" i'll usually try to remember. i did notice what slaveluci was talking about in regards to a particular poster, and it seems a lot of people "forget" when they're also conveniently trying to be rude. i also take that as a sign of immaturity.

(i'll also try to remember "kali" -- i think i've typed kalik before, to differentiate from other names that can be shortened to kali, too. =p haha only somewhat familiar with kshama -- it's a concept not an outright diety, i thought? i do have a gorgeous statue of saraswati who sits on my art table. ^_^ )

There's no comfortable way to shorten my name (Pal? Palla? Doesn't work.), so it doesn't really come up much. Other names I've had in the past were much more amenable to it, and that didn't much bother me. At one point I went by Allaidh and people shortened it to Alla which was weird for obvious reasons, but other than that. It's odd, because the shortening (or even localizing, by and large) my real name I find absolutely unacceptable.

I think that her posts just reflect on her and I try to be better than that rather than behaving the same way. Personally she comes across as very insecure deep inside which is (IMO) how most bullies are.

I don't think you were around for that particular vile outburst, you could literally see the other person reeling and trying to defend herself just to be shut down in flames with sanctimonious rubbish - yes, I am sure that other person wanted to be born with a mental and physical disability (they are seriously obvious from the posts and the profile, she wasn't doing a Dave) just to be accused of being far too lazy and getting her face rubbed in what she doesn't have.

Probably not. I agree that what she wrote was above and beyond - but it still says far more about her than anything else. The girl she was slagging got lots of support no doubt, while she herself ruined any good rep she might have had.

I'd rather sit back and let that kind of person do the job for me; they never disappoint.

I have a name that very few, if any, Americans are able to pronounce properly. And it really got under my skin when people mispronounced it. So I shortened it to lyn when I was a teenager & attending the 2nd of my 3 high schools; my theory was that these people couldn't remember the weird ethnic name & that's why they weren't being friendly to me. Turned out I'm just that odd, but that's another whole story. LOL

Finally, when I was in my 40's I moved to San Francisco & decided to reclaim my given name & not be bothered by the way people mispronounced it. In fact, when I would introduce myself to new people, I would pronounce it the way that most Americans did & the way the name would be pronounced if it were spelled correctly. Once I decided not to be bothered by how people said my name, I felt so much better. Because while other people were doing their best, as long as it bothered me, I was the one being made miserable about it. In other words, I covered over that particular button I'd been allowing so many, including strangers, to push. It never really affected them when they mispronounced my name; I was the one who was irked & bothered by it.

So my first day on a new job in SF, my boss got my name wrong & I tried correcting her once & then gave up & allowed her to introduce me to everyone there as "Leanna". I figured that I'd straighten it out later. OMG! When she found out, she came bursting into my office demanding to know why I hadn't made her pronounce it correctly & I just laughed & made her feel at ease about it. She ended up laughing too. There was one woman in a surgeon's office who I dealt with on the phone on a regular basis who insisted on calling me "Lanai". I tried for the first little while to correct her, but she never did get it. And so I became Lanai to her. She was happy, I wasn't upset, it was all good.

So that's my point about people allowing others to have that kind of power over them & their feelings. When you stop allowing the things that people do & say to bother you, life is so much more pleasant. To this day, my Norwegian grandparents & my Father were the only ones who ever pronounced my name correctly according to the pronunciation rules of the Norwegian language. And the 2-year-old grandson of my Orthodox Jewish employers.
