Though it did bother me when people changed my real name in real life abroad (at least when they knew me since a while and knew how to write it and how to say it), as mentioned on another thread, as I am not fond of shortening names (even less when I already have a short name to begin with) but on here I couldn't care less

Oh it's totally cool, darling. I actually use "Sunny" on the quote of the day as a play on words - my name and something happy. I love word plays :)

This has not been a problem. Cynthia is my name, and I can even respond well to being called Cyn...however...

I hate being called Cindy. I was the new kid in school almost every year of my life and each time there were already two or three Cynthias in the classroom; I never got to answer to my own name until I was in High School, but was called Cindy instead. (Maybe the long blonde hair and bangs had something to do with it.)

My mother also called me Cindy until I left home at 17, because my father had named me Cynthia, and calling me Cindy pissed him off. <rolls eyes>

As a strange coincidence, I kept having friends...named Cindy. Years after I moved from California, when someone would call out "Cindy!" my head would whip around and I expected to see her.

Years ago, someone nicknamed me Cynnie. That name belongs with him, and if anyone else calls me that it puts my teeth on edge.

My username, Cynthia, or Cyn are all fine.

Hlen5 can't get much shorter! Hlen is fine, too (I kinda like it). On the other side I sign Helen for cmail, until I and the other party have corresponded a couple of times. After that, I use my given name.

I've been called "wind" and "windy" many times in here, but sometimes I do wake up at night and wonder if they really had an ulterior motive.......

I've always considered it a given that once your name was over about 7 letters long (or was hard to spell correctly) online, it would get shortened.

It doesn't bother me when they do it to me because they usually just call me "luci" which is what I sign my posts as. It does rub me the wrong way when I see angry posters modifying each others' names, esp. in a derogatory way. There's one poster who jumps to mind who has specifically asked others not to short her name to the first word in her profile name. While attacking her in a current thread, several folks kept calling her that instead of what she had specifically asked folks to use. Just another way for them to be rude and irritating. I find it childish and very telling about their maturity level.........luci

you know, i don't think i have seen anybody make that request anywhere, so if it was made a long fucking time ago, then too fucking bad, you can't expect people to go back and check if somebody wants their name shortened a particular way or not. do what honeypaws does. if it fucking matters to you what people call you put that in your fucking sig.
