I don't really have a favorite, but I can tell you the one in Minneapolis/St. Paul actually charges you to use the wi-fi......and it's not cheap!  Every other airport I've been in it's free......but otherwise, airports are airports.

Overpriced food and drinks  ($2.98 for a 20 oz bottle of soda everywhere!), uncomfortable seats, screaming kids.....and the inevitable hike to the other side of the airport to catch a connecting flight.  The shorter the layover, the further the walk.

I like Las Vegas airport because you can gamble in a smoke free environment and there are windows to look out as you do it. They have Rolex clocks, which just seems obnoxiously kitschy in an obscene sort of way. They have enough stores and restaurants to kill time at, too.

baltimore airport was sort of nice.    This is a hard question-  because most airports have been redone since I last used them.

I liked John Wayne airport for the exciting take-offs & San Diego for the exciting landings. The actual buildings? Meh.

Soul, true but when I'm travelling I don't mind spending money.
When I go to Ireland I usually spend $5,000 including everything. Gifts, sweaters etc for a bunch of people.
I may have a drink in the airport but the airline (Aer Lingus) feeds you pretty good on the flight, big meal about two hours after leaving and breakfast before you land so I don't usually eat a meal in the airport.

I don't love Beijing Airport, but there is something that I love about it - there is this wonderful coy pond with bridges, meditation spaces, a place to write your name in Chinese.  I love the peacefulness there.  It's lovely.  Also Abu Dhabi - they have great showers! and a place to pray.

The other one I adore is Honolulu - everything is outside.  You get off the plane, and the wind just takes your hair in its clutches, and you must laugh.

best,
sunshine

Exciting take-offs and landings are probably two things you don't want while flying.

I love SFO. Maybe because it's my home airport, but they always have nice art to look at while walking to your gate. It's nice to kill time. And I love to get clam chowder in a bread bowl from Boudin to eat on my flight and piss off everyone around me who paid $7 for cheese and crackers. [:D]

Two smaller airports that I like are Myrtle Beach here (MYR) and Portland, Maine. (PWM)
When you get off the plane in Myrtle Beach you get your luggage and it's about 50 or 60 steps to your car right out front.
When you land in Portland you just walk out front cross the street and the rental car cos. are right there and I always seem to get an upgrade.

Köln/Bonn, because it is close.

No contest. Kai Tak (the old Hong Kong airport). Absolutely the wildest hairiest, craziest approach ever. The plane flies through the city, that's right I said through, not over. On the final approach to one of the runways you can look out your window and into apartments as you fly past the high rises...the buildings' top floors are above the plane. The attached pics give an idea of just what its like.

It really freaked me out, as far as I know the pilots needed a special license, it was a bit of a spooky experience...

Zuerich airport is quite nice with a lot of nice shops and spas, Munich is also quite good (free coffee and tea at the Lufthansa check-ins) and really easy to navigate, Amsterdam Schipohl is lovely and clean, Dubai is amazing and Johannesburg is also great and one I really really love is Graz, Austria, it's tiny with no waiting lines, super fastest check in ever and such friendly people!

sunshinemiss -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 2:10:20 AM)

Oh and I love Cuzco Peru (of course!) ... There are people dressed in traditional outfits playing traditional music as you wait for your luggage.  Then you get in a cab... if you don't know the deal  - and they charge you 30 soles (about 10 USD) to get to your hotel room... or you cross the street and flag down a cab for about 4 soles.  I love feeling like I know the deal...   :)

I think I wanna follow LC and AR around on their adventures!!!

Best,
sunshine

sunshine, it's gotten a lot more quiet now in the past 4 years but the years before were not so pleasant, I ended up with always having a suitcase on standby and lived more out of a suitcase than at home, due to work. It wasn't all that much fun.

I can give you a much much longer list of really shitty airports, and they weren't fun.

Oh another airport that is fun in an odd way is Cardiff International Airport, I always had the feeling they chase the sheep from the runway before you land, roughest landings, never had a passport control there, you basically get out and you're in a semi spacious living room - that would be the departure and arrival lounge...

ExquisiteStings -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 3:02:45 AM)

Let's get to the USA airports...Miami International, O'Hare in Chicago, Newark in New Jersey, LaGuardia in Queens, NY, JFK in Brooklyn, NY and LAX are some of the worst, busiest, biggest most chaotic airports in the world.

Back to the good ones, Fort Lauderdale Airport, not nearly as crazy as M.I.A. , MacArthur Airport  in Islip, Long Island, Burbank Airport in Burbank CA, and West Palm Beach International airport are cute, small, easily navigational airports and if you forget that you have your toenail scissors in your carryon  bag and didn't put this extremely dangerous instrument in your baggage, you only have a short walk in Burbank to get to the check in counter so you can put this weaponry into your cargo hold luggage. And I agree that the airport in Portland , OR is very nice, spacious, non-chaotic and peaceful. Also falling into this category would be the airport at Keplavik (sp?) in Iceland, where there are no long lines and strict security guards staring you down.

ExquisiteStings -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 3:04:51 AM)

To Arpig,
Those are really hairy pictures. I didn't think that airplanes or that size or any size were allowed to fly that close to city buildings. I thought all over that that was restricted airspace; hence how I knew when the airplanes crashed into the twin towers that that was no accident.

HeatherMcLeather -> RE: What are your favorite airport(s) and why? (6/6/2011 3:38:51 AM)

Unbelievable!! If you hadn't posted the pictures I wouldn't have believed you, and even then I half thought they might be photoshopped until LadyC confirmed what you said.

Can you imagine what it must be like to have 747s screaming past your window all day? I'm never going to complain about the neighbour's Harley again. [:D]

Maybe only deaf people live there? ....
