I don't know what's going on with  you wilbur.  It seems you hang out on the board by the hour trying to insult people.

I am sorry for whatever bad turn your life has taken.  I hope things pick up soon.

Now feel free to act like a child alone.

Hmm.. interesting but if Muslim didn't work for Obama last time, I'm thinking Mormon for Romney (even though that one is actually true) isn't going to work this time. There's got to be more.

You get back what you give. You have never once responded to a post of mine without being a snarky asshole.

Actually, IT TOTALLY WASN'T Working in mass. And he ditched on us with all kinds of shit incomplete. But Healthcare had the worst impact of all. We were mandated to have health care and there no initial safety net for all the healthcare companies that suddenly were going up as much as 25%.
However, the good news is that Governor Patrick sponsored a bill that  required mass health to absorb those who couldn't afford insurance, had their own business, or were stuck with one of the fly-by-night companies Romney let in on the deal ... such as MegaHealth (CAN YOU SAY MOTHER FUCKING CROOKS?).
So, while you may have a warm fuzzy for Mit The Shit, but know that the people in the state he governed have a very sour taste in their mouths from his rule.

1. The GOP doesn't want bright.  It's not simply the GOP - Kerry was painted as being too intellectual (remember when he went duck hunting to try to establish himself as a regular guy?).  One of the reasons Palin evokes interest is that she is not an intellectual - she deliberately gave photo ops of hunting wolves as part of her crafted image.  I suspect that a lot of the anti-Obama sentiment is due to his Ivy League, intellectual background.

Perhaps, but I think a sensible GOP would prefer bright. They (the Xtian right??) just won't accept it at the expense of compliant.

quote:

The GOP and media like PASSION.  They like "Bring it on", "Mission Accomplished", etc.  They like Palin's and Bachmann's simple world views and Trump's looniness.  Romney, for all his virtues, elicits as much passion as a fish with perfect hair.

Ah.. that goes back to my "cool" guy theory.

quote:

2. The GOP has a series of litmus tests that Romney passes barely if at all.  The fact that he's a moderate gives him a shot in the general but makes him almost unwinnable in the primary.  His strength is supposedly in economic issues, which should dominate the general, but the GOP is more concerned about social issues and budget cuts.

Hmm. Seems a bit short-sighted when all three of those are literally tied together anyway.

quote:

3. He's changed stances.  Health care, gay rights, abortion - he's toeing the main GOP line on those issues but had to change his stances to do that.  One of the many horrible things that W did to the US political scene was to excoriate Kerry so badly for flip-flopping and changing his stance that politicians are now expected to hold to their stances forever, as though changing under changing circumstances is ethically wrong, when in fact it is the only reasonable thing to do.

I imagine the average voter is going to expect attack ads featuring the famous flip-flop offense. Point made.

quote:

4. He's a Mormon.  Odd that the most sensible candidates such as Romney and Huntsman belong to the looniest religion.

Some folks think that all religions are loony.

I can't think of any right off the top of my head. It's been since college that I've read the Mormon saga... but JUST WAIT till you get to read about their behavior on the way out to the Salt lake... it'll curl your hair my friend.

This is what I know.

I grew up in the Christian Right until I was old enough to escape.  The Mrs family is deeply involved.  We get bombarded with literature and email forwards from the different groups and organizations.  Occasionally we even read some of them just to see what's going on.

Last election cycle there were many "reminders" that Romney is a Mormon.  Some were subtle while others were quick to point out that the Mormons are a cult.  I expect to start seeing those again as the election cycle nears.

Many of these same people are birthers.  Email after email on the topic.

Lots of support for Sarah Palin.

While they aren't able to just elect their own candidate they are a block vote that can push one candidate past another in the primary.

Personally I believe Romney is the best of the Republicans running.  I also believe if elected he would mirror Obama in certain ways.  The further left you go in the Democratic party they are unhappy because Obama is not liberal enough.  I think you will have the same effect in the Republican Party.  The further right you go they will be unhappy because Romney is not conservative enough.

I think the closer to the center the better off we are all.

Very good post and excellent point about the block voting. I agree about being closer to the center because I'm wired that way myself (either a Pisces thing or a bi thing.. take yer pick. ). That needs to be combined with out of the box thinking so we can come up with viable solutions to what ails us. I would love to see Romney be able to deliver all that so we have some real options and good choices for leading us forward.

Mitt doesn't capture my imagination, and he just oozes that insincere, creepy politician vibe. I don't think he has the charisma and passion that will be needed to send President Obama back to Chicago.

Creepy? Wow.. okay. That reminds me of someone. Creepy and weird. heheh.. Anyway, who does capture your imagination right now? Mr. Cain?

I don't want what they call, "the best and the brightest" in the White House, I want "a man or woman of the people."
The best and the brightest usually aren't.

Fair enough. So who *isn't* too educated that you could stand behind? Who do you see as a wo/man of the people?

I think your premise is wrong, Romney leads in polls of GOP voters, and unless Perry gets in is the odds on favorite imo.

Ok. 19.3 didn't seem like an overwhelming mandate to me but it's still pretty early.

Things will begin to coalesce a bit after Monday. There are still too many pretenders splitting the vote. If you parse them out and even just allocate their votes evenly amongst the rest and voila, he's up in the 40s.

Thanks for that perspective Skipper.

I wouldn't exactly say I have a warm fuzzy for Romney. Obama got my vote last time and is 99.9% going to get it this time unless my heartthrob decides to run.. and he won't.

I think he realizes it, he's just trying to save face through the debate and hopes to be credible enough that he will have some input into the final platform. After that he slips quietly into the night.

Ya, "The 19th Wife" portrayed the 1,000 mile Iowa City to Utah immigration as on foot, pulling handcarts, with criminally small rations and the people in charge making the immigrants depart so late in the year that those who didn't starve to death arrived frostbitten. This is the part that made me want to read some non-fiction.

The "The 19th Wife"'s POV in the 1800's part is of Chauncey Webb's daughter. He was so overcome by the immigrants' plight that he married two teenagers and a 20 something within a month.

I like him but he carries a bit of baggage too.  He favored in state tuition for illegal immigrants as I recently heard and what ever else I don't know yet. Must be what it takes to get elected in TX.
