A new friend from work and I have been reminiscing lately about some of the things we miss from being kids, mostly because life gets pretty real pretty fast these days and sometimes it's nice to indulge in a little escapism. We started talking about how much we miss passing notes between classes (do kids even do that anymore with text messaging and whatnot?) and playing pickleball in P.E. So I started thinking about some of the little joys and escapes from childhood that I still enjoy now that I'm a jaded old dude with anxieties and responsibilities and existential crises and the terror of growing even older even on my mind oh God.....

Calvin and Hobbes still cracks me up. Especially the Snowman strips. Mad love for Watterson forever!

Ditto for Peanuts strips. God, I feel like Charlie Brown with that football some days! Every Christmas I just have to watch the Peanuts Christmas special.

I still love freshly made chocolate chip cookies although when I bake a batch these days I give most of them away because they go straight to my ass.

I still love roller skating even though I don't do it enough. Ditto for wiffleball. I would love to be in a good game of wiffleball right now instead of sitting around a hotel suite killing time before an afternoon meeting, that's for darn sure!

There's probably plenty more.

I used to spend a lot of time in trees, loved to climb them, lol.

I read a book....again and again.....about a girl who had a really cool tree house that her father had built her, and he added something to it every year, like a locking cupboard, a window with glass panes, a hammock. Gawd, I still want a cool tree house

This makes me sort of jealous! There was a crucial stage of childhood development during which I had an overprotective, indeed fascist, nanny who would never allow me to climb trees. By the time I broke free of those shackles, I was too old to learn and already washed up as a childhood adventurer! :(

Still, good for you and also good for your friend with the cool tree house!

I kind of miss collecting stickers.

Confession: Sometimes when I write letters by hand to old friends, I will still decorate both the letters and the envelopes with stickers! Ponies, unicorns, dragons, Mighty Mouse, everything but Smurfs (which are creepy and possibly antisemitic). Obviously I don't do this with anyone I don't know pretty well, since I think it vibes "frivolous and possibly a little creepy" but with people who appreciate silliness and a little dose of whimsy I'm all about stickers.

I think I mostly miss that freedom of living in the moment. How you could get up for the day and assuming there's no school (or better...a snow day!) or chores, there would be this feeling of anticipation of having the whole day ahead of you waiting to unfold. The small things you would do all day long that completely captivated all of your attention in any given moment.

Then, whatever burning desire you had you were free to follow through on till you had to be home for lunch or dinner. So simple and so utterly engrossing.

I love coloring! A brand new box of 64 Crayola crayons was the holy grail, lol. Sharpener in the back, and oh gawd, the aroma........intoxicating! LOL

And I still love the smell of magic markers....memories of getting buzzed in the 3rd grade....

And I know you people over 45 know the thrill of receiving freshly mimeographed papers in class, still warm with the heady scent.......

Constantly being mistaken for a girl, yeah no......

I actually buy the DVD sets of some of my favorite childhood cartoons. I loved the Tales From the Cryptkeeper. One episode in particularly called "Hide and go Shriek" about a geeky little nerd(who I totally identified with at the time) who buys so magic tea in order to get revenge on a big Bully, who picked on him(also identified with) that turns him into a werewolf.

Sigh....good times.

Oh lots of things!

Several years ago, I was out hiking with my camera. I saw a lovely vista and when I got there, I realized that the best photo was going to involve me climbing up on a fence and balancing on a fence post. Right across the road from the neighbour. I immediately thought something like "OMG I cannot do THAT! What the hell will they think if they SEE ME?!?!?" I caught myself and made a promise to never miss an opportunity for fun because of worry of what anyone might think.

I will go for walks in the rain or during a heavy snow storm. Play in the snow. Walk barefoot in puddles and mud.

I love love LOVE a grilled cheese sandwich with Campbell's tomato soup. Will have the occasional bologna and potato chip sandwich. And will, if given the opportunity, scoop up baked beans with Ruffles potato chips. About the only two ways I will eat regular potato chips actually.

I finger paint with the grands, play in clay with them........hell, just about anything they want to do, I am happy to jump right in.

I adore watching animated kids movies.......and old cartoons......and a few new ones.

I will still, on occasion, eat cold pizza or dessert for breakfast.

Basically, I don't want to ever allow being a grownup to stop me from enjoying life.

new boxes of crayons for the absolute win ^_^ i have a box of 64 and a tinkerbell coloring book on my craft table as we speak ^_^

If you ever wish to revisit that.........ahhhhhhhhh (how to say this without suggesting something illegal)....... find that chronic pain that will get you some great medical herb!

I was a little too old for Tales from the Cryptkeeper but I admired the concept.

You reminded me, though, that I would totally watch the hell out of a cartoon I did love as a kid--the old Alf cartoon which was way better than the sitcom with the disturbing little puppet. Sadly I just checked and most of the episodes are not available via Netflix. :(

Comfort foods, like tuna noodle casserole every now and then.
Ice cream trucks! I STILL chase them down!
Loony Toons.
OH MY GOD YES! New box of crayons!
Ice freakin cold glass bottle of dr. pepper. The kind where it gets covered in ice crystals when you pull it out of the cooler, but it's JUST 1/2 degree too warm to freeze the soda.
Labyrinth and Dark Crystal
Fireworks.
Saturday morning cartoons, getting up at 4am, watching them whilst eating a big bowl of some crappy sugary kids cereal.

This is the short list... I could go on for weeks.

Well is it STILL all about Pogs? Because the question was pretty clearly about childhood pleasures you still enjoy and yet you stumble in here all willy nilly going "Durr I like pogs!" Jesus, shape up or ship out!

JK I love pogs! Pog-buddies 4 ever! <3

Yes! I'm pretty sure grilled cheese sandwiches are my favorite childhood comfort food too. They've always been such a crucial part of my life I don't even identify them with childhood, but that's absolutely where my love affair with les sandwiches du fromage began.
