Not for the real men it hasn't, and, for the ones who have trouble being real men, well, they would have only been putting on a better display of alleged manhood by conforming to societal norms, anyhow. This way, you get to see the wimpy little darlings, from a distance, and, corral or avoid them as you will.

Is this the words of a 'real woman' or just a fake woman? Are you defining your own womanhood on societal norms or something of your own making, or some false imaginings of a cheesy romance novel?

Are you being wimpy by conforming to what you believe a 'real woman' is or are you being your own authentic self, regardless of what you perceive is expected of you to be?

i mean used to when a man would open a door or pull out a chair for a woman it was called being a gentleman. now if he does it, hes called a pig or chauvinist.  when a woman wants to be obedient to a man, society looks at her like shes not a real woman or something.  a man takes control over his woman, and society looks at him like he must be forcing her or she must be a victim.   so do you think society has made it hard for men to be real men and take control?

Society makes accusations and assumptions constantly.. It all comes down to whether you live the way 'society' wants you to, or whether you pay no attention to it. You can either listen to, and believe the 'labels' that they deem you. Or, you can simply be like..
'Hey, society. Have a nice cup of 'shut the F*** up', and let me be who I am, and do what I want.'

If a man depends on society to define whether he is a real man or not, then clearly, that should answer his question. Don't you think?

I should think the answer to that is obvious. Clearly she is a "real woman" since only a real woman would be worrying about real men. Which immediately calls into question YOUR realness LaT... after all, you don't spend a lot of time worrying about "real men" and the entire thought process just isn't something I can see you investing in.

I think you're a fake woman.

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: do you think society has made it hard for men to be real men? (7/30/2011 1:34:18 PM)

Since you recognise LaT as a fake woman, you are a fake man. Gee this game is fun!

~shakes head~ Nuh-uh Jeff, either you're born "real" or you aren't. It's not something that can be learned.

LOLOLOL -- OK, now I almost spit wine all over the keyboard trying to wrap my head around a fake baby. I don't know about everyone else, but man, both of my babies were as deadly real as anything could ever be. Maybe I wasn't doing it right?

Prozac and other drugs do a great job at making people numb to emotions and disturbing thoughts. Pretty sad, that if they actually got some physical activitiy and a better diet their moods and sense of self value..might just be a little more healthier.

This is such garbage, I don't even know where to start.

People take SSRIs when the only emotions they have are the dark, self defeating, self hating and suicidal ones. Changing diet and exercise won't affect suicidal ideation at all.

And if you aren't feeling anything, it's a sign to go back to the doctor and change the dosage or the medication because that's not the desired result.

Bipolars are more likely to feel numb, just before they hit a bad depressive stage. Not a sign to go off the meds, a sign to call your doctor and therapist asap.

Ok, way late to the party and off topic to boot, but Whiplash, Des is spot on here. I'm on prozac and birth control because without it, I'm suicidal once a month. This is after increasing my exercise, reducing the junk that I eat, spending enough time outside that I'm darker than I have been since I was in marching band and I've had at least 6 people at work think I've bleached my hair, and losing over 30# in the last 6 months. I'm far more concerned about attitudes like yours towards mental health issues than I am about whether or not some twit gets her panties in a bunch over a guy opening a door for her. Views like that are why people don't go to get treated and end up in far worse condition than they need to be in.

Sometimes men have a difficult time knowing how to act, because a lot of times growing up, they do not have a father in the home to emulate. So thus, they are around a grown female to emulate ...and from what I've seen, it just fucks a majority of them up. To the point where they just don't function corr
ectly.

StCross -> RE: do you think society has made it hard for men to be real men? (7/31/2011 10:32:30 PM)

I think true men are not scared off by what society things of their actions but rather glare at in an open challenge for society to accept and test their character. The will and say of society is ever changing and only holds strong over those weak enough to bend to it and assimilate into its collective mass. So a true man in my opinion would face that title wave with a Clint Eastwood glare and get crushed by it instead of backing down from his own opinions and assumes responsibility for his actions by standing by them just like that.

You are assuming that real men take control. In my world, a real man is a gallant, chivalrous, masculine gentlemen who is in control of himself and is devoted to me.

And on the flip side, my close gentlemen friends who are dominant and just exactly that, except they don't submit to their partner.

petslave2b -> RE: do you think society has made it hard for men to be real men? (8/2/2011 4:55:42 PM)

Men never opened doors and pulled out chairs because they were being "real men", they did it because society viewed women as being weak, fragile and incompetent. In modern society people are quite right in looking down at such men. On the other hand, a man (or woman) who holds a door open for the next person (man or woman), or opens a door for someone who may struggle to open it themselves (carrying something, disabled), then that is a courteous person. The first one is opening a door because he thinks women can't do it for themselves or he is mindlessly following a social ritual (mindlessly following social rituals seems quite out of place in this crowd). The second one is simply a kind, courteous, thoughtful individual (and yes, this would also be a description of a "real man"). Obviously in this lifestyle one sets ones own rules for behaviour, and one should not be concerned with what society thinks of those choices. Serving a woman as a butler/doorman would is obviously different to blindly follwing rituals or being a social throwback.

As for who the real men are, you might want to consider Joe Jackson's views on the subject. Our physiology and socities are constantly evolving, the one thing a "real man" could never be is stagnant or de-evolved.

LadyAngelika -> RE: do you think society has made it hard for men to be real men? (8/2/2011 6:20:16 PM)

Be careful petslave2b, you are generalizing. I'm sure throughout the areas, many men have done many things for women purely out of love. Probably more than you think.

See, and for me, the men I know do chivalrous things like opening doors because they are being respectful.
