Hey everyone!

So I have this final paper I need to write in which I have to answer the following questions:

Discuss how your own life would be different if one specific event of the 1960s had never occurred. How did that same event influence your course of study and your choice of career path? Finally, how different would the world be if that same event had never occurred?

At first, I chose the civil rights movement and realized that I'd have to pick one specific event from it and couldn't decide so instead, I chose the creation of "the pill" which occurred in 1960. What are your thoughts on how different things would be in your life and the world at large had the pill not been invented? I have to spread out my answers into 5 pages for these three questions which I am finding to be pretty challenging so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

Women would not be enjoining the workforce as they are today.  More families would sit down and eat together.  Divorce would be less.

You are the second person who mentioned the divorce rate. I was wondering, what is your take on the concept of divorce in relation to the creation of the pill?

Look, with limited skills, cuz you are titminding babies and taking care of house, not alot of job opportunities, you got 4 or 5 kids, and the laws would not have swung in the favor of your leaving (cuz the impetus would not be there) you gonna live with it?

You dont often see women with that many kids hunting up divorces if the situation is less than death.

I got pregnant while on the pill with 6 out of seven pregnancies. The seventh pregnancy was after I had my tubes tied.
The number would probably be closer to 30, my husbands side of the family is very hugely fertile.
sorry I cant go into the deeper possibilities, because that would be my truth. Or I would be in prison for murdering the sperm man

Okay, I can see where you are coming from. A friend of mine thought that the divorce rate would be less as a result of less percentages of women cheating due to their ability to get pregnant.

If the pill was never invented, there would have perhaps been less sexual experimentation, but I doubt it. People have sex drives. Some other thing would have been invented and there are already a million other forms of contraception. And cave people were still fucking and they did not have the pill.

The pill simply coincided with the feminist movement about women freeing themselves and their sexuality.

Wow, that would be overkill if you had to deal with that many kids. I know someone who has 12 children and is a pharmacist. I don't know how he and his wife manage.

Nah, just more non-fathers would be fathers.

Lower rates of breast cancer, but higher rates of ovarian cancer.
The Roman Catholic Church would still allow birth control to be decided at the 'local' level as far as communion goes.
No morning after pill.
The NSF would still hold 'non-mission' research as more valuable.
Russell Marker would have made other innovations.
No endowed Harvard Chair for reproductive studies.
Increase in abortions in China.

Those are a few for you.

I will also suggest this book for you to read:

There's a divorce pill?

Hello OP,

First, let me preface with I'm a teacher. While I understand that you want to have a discussion about this, are you actually working within the spirit of the assignment? When I ask my students to write an opinion paper, I want THEIR opinion. I want them to think about it - particularly a paper that is about THEIR LIFE. I can't possibly know how YOUR life would be different, what career path changes there would be. No one on this board can. We can certainly give our opinions about how the world would be different, but in the end, the question as you posed it is that you are to talk about how YOUR life would be different.

So, I ask you - how has the birth control pill affected you? Would you have been born? Did your family talk to you about birth control? Have you used it? What medical issues have you needed to manage with birth control? How has this affected your career path?

I am happy when the questions spark debate, but you aren't really debating. You are asking people to write your paper for you or at the very least to do the thinking for you. I would consider that on the continuum of cheating. What kind of critical thinking are you learning if you get others to do your thinking for you?

... and to the forum regulars who are answering this - why is THIS question ok for a paper that you will discuss but when folks want to talk about BDSM for a paper or they are doing research, people get their panties all in a twist. This issue is no less personal. It is no less vague. It is all about how you answer it - whether you make it personal versus conceptual.

best,
sunshine

oh... and you might like to do some research about sexual practices where birth control pills are not readily available - I've lived in those places (had some of the best damn sex I've ever had, and living in those places made a huge difference in my career)... What do those people do? Probably the same stuff that people would still be doing if the pill hadn't been invented.

My question to you is what is it that you are stuck on?

I won't do my nieces' homework assignments for them and never give them the answers when they ask for help.

But if you are trying to puzzle out how to extrapolate the possibility of changes, perhaps doing a preliminary mapping with a flow chart type diagram would help?

I appreciate your take on my asking other people for their opinions on the topic. I disagree with you on it being like cheating though. I talk to other people in order to get my brain in the mode of paper writing. I am not asking anyone to write my paper for me. I do have a lot of information already down for the paper but unfortunately it is not enough to cover the 5 pages that is asked of me. So instead of just settling with what I've thought up on and getting a bad grade for not submitting the "right" amount of pages for it, I have decided to ask the opinion of other people to gather some more ideas to add to the paper, which I need to back with my own research and citations. Would you say me asking the local librarian for ideas of how to research this topic is cheating? Critical thinking can be inspired by socializing.

Hello Rayvyn,

Let me clarify. I specifically chose the term "continuum of cheating" for a reason. If my students have to write an opinion paper, I want THEIR opinion. College applications, TOEIC, etc. aren't going to allow you to ask others. I often make them write an opinion paper (why are some people straight but some are gay - use nature and nurture as your reference points; what would you do if your girlfriend wanted to have an abortion? which is more interesting - dancing tango or singing The Phantom of the Opera? give reasons to back up your answer, what does love look like?).

I'm glad to hear that you have done some of the research. The way you posed your question did not make that clear, and since it came right on the heels of your other question, I thought... Whoa. What's this about? As for asking the local librarian HOW to research this - that would be no different than asking this group of people. That is NOT what you did though. You asked how OUR lives would be different. I know it may be a bit nit picky (it wouldn't be the first time a student told me that ), but it was what prompted my question.

I agree that critical thinking can be inspired by socializing. I would hazard a guess and say you are an extrovert! Generally speaking, extroverts tend to do thinking as a debate / discussion process. (I teach debate as well). I enjoy watching how the wheels turn and people's thoughts move in different directions. It's more difficult with introverts - that's why they have to write!

That you were able to answer in such a positive light without getting defensive says a lot about your character and your ability to do the work. Thank you for answering in the spirit my question was asked - even though it was a tough point.

Good luck on your paper.
best,
sunshine

Critical thinking can be inspired by socializing.

Yeah, but this isn't critical thinking, this is asking other people to cheat for you.

Critical thinking looks like this:

Break your life (and hence the essay) down into areas. In history essays, we were taught to use the following areas:

Foreign
Religious
Ideological
Social
Political
Individual (meaning individual historical figures)
Economic
Cultural
Chance

Now some of those will transfer onto a personal history and some won't. Come up with topic similar topic areas to replace the ones that don't. Work out how the pill could affect each of those areas - two or three contrasting ideas of how each area could go. Write a few paragraphs comparing and contrasting those ideas and summing up which you think the most likely outcome for each topic area. Three paragraphs each on nine topic areas plus an introduction and a conclusion gives you twenty nine paragraphs. If you can't make five pages out of that then you ought not to be on whatever course you're on.

That is critical essay planning. Not 'hey bunch of internet strangers, can I have all the answers plskthxbai?'
