The EIA said on June 23 that it will release a 60 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves over 30 days which will start at the end of this week so that it can make up for Libya's production and half of which will come from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve which will keep the downside pressures on oil in the coming period.

China's demand on oil is slowing. The EIA is about to start releasing barrels.. and Japan is showing a slowing demand on oil as well.

Should be an interesting summer.

Does this mean that you believe in the laws of supply and demand, in regard to oil prices?

And that you believe that lower oil prices are good?

I believe it works that way, to an extent. I also believe the prices are falsely elevated due to speculation. I believe that has hit most markets, along with the draining purchases of China. As oil is sought, speculators will hike the prices.

What remains to be seen is what these current events will do to the speculative markets.

Lower prices are always good.... again to a point.

And, before you start going on and on about drilling, over 300 permits have been issued.

But, I do have a question for you, Sanity. In all your postings about the lack of drilling.... how long does it take from the time a driller is granted a permit until oil is in a barrel?

Sanity -> RE: 60 Million gallons of gas to be released (7/1/2011 8:56:21 PM)

Its immaterial how long because Dems have been using the time it takes as an excuse to choke off our energy supplies for decades now, in fact many times over the length of time that it takes

I looks like Obama's scheme to lower the price of oil didn't work to well. The price of gas in Milwaukee went from $3.46 a gallon to $3.75 a gallon in the last 48 hours. Obama is an idiot.

Hillwilliam -> RE: 60 Million gallons of gas to be released (7/1/2011 9:46:32 PM)

It dropped here about 15 cents in the last week.

Down to 3.27 as of today.

No ones pointed out yet that its oil being released from the strategic reserve, and not gas. Have they?

I read it may take up to 8 months to drill an exploratory well in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Seems 10 years is the agreed upon time frame from start to pumping.

Dems?

Republicans in the House dropped their support for a measure to allow oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The death of the proposal in the House comes just a week after the Senate voted to approve it. Even if Congress passed the legislation, experts say that no oil would be produced at ANWR until 2015.

Majority in both Senate and the House.... Republican. With a Republican President.

Yep... its all the Democrats fault.

Sanity -> RE: 60 Million gallons of gas to be released (7/2/2011 6:52:18 AM)

If you follow the article back to the original Bloomburg story you will learn thats part of the complicated budget negotiations, and Senate Republicans have already approved it.

Further, that particular drilling legislation is not dead yet, and it is not the only domestic oil or gas or coal etc that has been placed off limits for recovery.

But in my opinion whats really bizarre about your spin is your total denial that the left has been against recovering carbon based fuels for a long time, because of their extremist ecological views. Lately, in the last ten years or so the lefts opposition to cheap abundant energy has increased exponentially due to their Global Warming / Gaia-based religious beliefs.

Theyve been absolutely hysterical, save the cute little polar bears, kill a Republican, and all that...

Do you deny that the president and his energy secretary have publicly stated that they favor high energy prices? Would you like me to dig up the links?

mnottertail -> RE: 60 Million gallons of gas to be released (7/2/2011 7:09:29 AM)

nobody is against cheap abundant energy except the republican corporate lackeys.

only as much as a 1/4 of the leased oil rights land is drilled.

yet the republican corporate lackeys refuse and have refused for many many years to agree to use it or lose it bills sponsored by democrats.

Another epic fail, Tom.

Actually, in this instance, the idiocy is yours. Gas here has fallen from over $4 to $3.70. And to take a look at the national situation, USA Today reports:

Gas prices expected to drop to $3.40 a gallon by July 4

By Gary Strauss, USA TODAY
Updated 6/24/2011 8:19 AM

After facing $4 sticker shock at the pump for much of 2011, consumers are now likely to get a break by the July Fourth holiday weekend as gas prices fall to $3.40 or lower.

The catalyst is coming from both the U.S. and the International Energy Association, which announced plans Thursday to sell 60 million barrels of oil from emergency reserves and possibly more later.

The release, which includes 30 million barrels from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, is aimed at cutting crude prices and bolstering the sputtering global economy by offsetting production declines in Libya and the Middle East.

Regular gasoline peaked at a national average of $3.98 a gallon in early May. Slumping demand has pushed the average to $3.61. Reserve sales could cut prices another 20 cents or more.

"This packs a psychological punch that's going to lower pump prices, for sure," says industry analyst Jim Ritterbusch of Ritterbusch & Associates. "This is a lift for both consumers and the economy."

Although 60 million barrels is less than the daily global consumption of about 85 million barrels, the news fueled a sell-off Thursday in crude oil futures. Benchmark West Texas crude fell 4.6% to $91.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, a four-month low.

The move by the Obama administration and the IEA — formed by the U.S. and 27 other countries in the wake of the energy crisis of the 1970s — drew support and opposition along mostly party lines.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, the Ohio Democrat who has pushed for oil reserve sales since rising gas prices began threatening to derail the economy, applauded the decision. "It's something we've been asking for for six months,'' he says. "It's smart and will help the economy."

Republicans criticized the move. "The president is using a national security instrument to address his domestic political problems,'' says House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "The SPR was created to mitigate sudden supply disruptions. This action threatens our ability to respond to a genuine national security crisis."

Industry analysts say the U.S. is releasing just 4% of the petroleum reserve, not enough to dent emergency supplies.

"Instead of spending money at the pump, consumers will feel better about spending elsewhere,'' says Patrick DeHaan, senior analyst at price tracker gasbuddy.com. He expects prices to range from $3.25 to $3.50 through summer.

I don't know about $3.40. But gas prices have fallen significantly nationwide.

Also, from yesterday's news:

Gas is 24 cents a gallon cheaper than Memorial Day

By Chris Kahn, Associated Press

NEW YORK — Call it an Independence Day discount.

Gasoline prices usually peak in the summer. This year, however, they peaked on May 5. The subsequent slide in pump prices has made gasoline an average 24 cents a gallon cheaper than what it was on Memorial Day.

The national average now stands at $3.55 per gallon. That's the cheapest gasoline has been since late March. It's still higher for this time of year than any other year except 2008 and about 80 cents higher than a year ago.

Prices have persistently declined since May, following a similar drop in oil prices.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate has given up more than 16% since the beginning of May. The contract for August delivery lost 25 cents to $95.17 per barrel Friday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oil fell after China reported that its manufacturing industry cooled off in June, slipping to its slowest pace in 28 months. Activity slowed as credit tightened due to inflation-fighting measures and weaker oversea demand. The country is still expected to drive world oil demand for years to come, but slower manufacturing growth means demand for fuels may not grow as quickly.
