Now, Jianjun Yin of the University of Arizona and colleagues report the warming water could mean polar ice melting faster than had been expected. Their report was published Sunday in the journal Nature Geoscience.

While melting floating ice won't raise sea level, ice flowing into the sea from glaciers often reaches the bottom, and grounded ice melted by warm water around it can produce added water to the sea.

"Ocean warming is very important compared to atmospheric warming because water has a much larger heat capacity than air," Yin explained. "If you put an ice cube in a warm room, it will melt in several hours. But if you put an ice cube in a cup of warm water, it will disappear in just minutes."

Status: offline 		Science has almost become a religion. We need to be wary of scientists anymore just as we would faith healers. The middle class has become the equivalent of honey bees. Work your ass off storing honey for your future and somebody comes along wearing a hazmat suit and blowing smoke in your hive and before you know it your honey and all the work that went into it is gone.

Status: offline 		I think global warming and cooling has been happening all along.  Not since the beginning of life on earth, but since the earth has been here.  I used to think man "may be" contrubuting to it, but I've since come to believe, since it has been happening all along, if man makes any impact on global warming or cooling its minimal, if at all.

Status: offline 		I always love it when a bunch of folks that couldn't pass a basic college chemistry class if their life depended on it "know" what is happening in the scientific community because they were told what to say by someone in the media who also has no knowledge but they get a great paycheck paid for by someone who does have the knowledge and a vested interest in the outcome.

I have learned to never trust popular media reports about scientific studies and papers, as they are more interested in dumbing it down, and playing up the certainties (and playing to their own biases), rather than the uncertainties of the actual science.

But, even without reading the report, just the AP report you quoted, I found these words telling:

... potentially raising sea levels ...

... could mean polar ice melting faster ...

I know its hard to believe, since we are talking about science and not a belief system....

Scientists *DO* take into account exactly what your talking about, when examining the information and data collected from observations and experiments. What they are saying (the scientists) is the rise is sharper and faster, than what has been the observational and normal trend of 'heating and cooling'. As such, they are trying to warn the general (and ignorant) public that if we as a race contuine on this path, there will be very bad consequences. The public, simply doesn't understand how two or three degrees of tempature change can have dire consequences on a region's biology system.
