News of the World phone hacking scandal, in which the tabloid is suspected of hacking into the voicemails of Milly Dowler, the family of Soham murder victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, and relatives of the 7/7 attack victims.

Pretty sick stuff I think, personally hate the tabloids but didn't really care about the exposees of football players or big brother contestants, a non issue for me but this?
If proved what should happen? Will people be sent to jail, namely Rebecca Wade, the private eye involved and possibly others?
NotW journalists have apparantly being paying police for info too, should those policemen go down too?
Will it have any effect at all on this type of journalism, after all it sells and that's all they care about

That will be up to the British public and the Crown.

But I cannot see the police using the tabloids as an intelligence service and vice versa begin tolerated, either ( Recall not only did they pay the police for information, but apparently the police got information from the tabloids in certain cases it is alleged.)

And while spying on the relatives of crime victims is sordid and can be dealt with in the courts in a civil suit, the fools also spied on various cabinet ministers, the monarch's household, and apparently on certain military figures.

In most countries this is regarded as espionage, and carries serious criminal sanctions.

Also I see they face contempt charges over spying on an innocent man accused of a murder.

So in short the Murdoch crew have torqued everyone in the UK from Elizabeth  on down through the government, parliament, the courts, the rest of the media, the police to the working class  family.

Pretty hard to run a business in the kingdom with this whole set thinking you are a band of scoundrels and the lot all wanting a chunk of your arse.

(Edited to note they now have been discovered to have been spying on the families of the war dead from Iraq and Afghanistan. What scum. Various soldiers groups are demanding the police release the names of those spied on to them. Also it appears several other murder case phones were hacked, notably that of Danielle Jones, Madeleine McCann, and Sarah Payne, and also that they hacked the phones of the Scotland Yard detectives assigned to investigate their phone hacking.)

Yeah its pretty sick stuff but then again many (not all) journalists come across as pond life. Wonder is a certain kind of ruthlessness required to be successful in this line of work?

Its causing uproar in the UK so I hope it will have a big impact on ethics/codes of conduct. I think the politicians know the public feels it is too shocking to let it go on.

There hsa been such an outcry from the general public that News International are closing the paper after Sunday. Profit from the final edition will be given to good causes.

All fine and dandy on the surface but there were reports earlier this year that the Sun and the NOTW would amalgamate. The crisis may have forced some hands. It will be interesting to see how the Suns circulation is affected, if that happens. Many people I have spoken to recently wont by either paper again.

I strongly suspect NI will soon roll out a new sunday tabloid that will look almost exactly like News of the World.

I'm betting Rupert and his top management who at the very least encouraged the attitude that led to the crimes will get away scot free. If it the former managing editor of the paper gets charged I'd be mildly surprised. More than likely it will be the reporters and the PI's and no one else.

Although I just read there may be a related case of bribing police officials that may involve arrests and charges as well.

Not necessarily: there have been stories that Murdoch junior wants to get rid of the publishing arm of NI in order to have the freedom to acquire more television holdings without the monopolies commission clucking their tongue at him.

News was the best selling English newspaper in the world. I really doubt they'd give up that sort of cash cow.

That is my point. NI wil simply print the same paper with a new name and slightly changed personnel.

Oh the Lizard of Oz has a few more tricks in him yet. And he has another  8-10 years of life left in him.

Don't worry the corporate media  has an understudy in the wings.

And it appears Cameron is going hand him the keys to Sky, and anyone not liking it can be damned..

That seems to be confirmed. Pfft. I always saw the NOTW as the 'Sunday Sun' anyway. Still, at present, that idea, and the closing of the NOTW, seems to be backfiring. People are calling it a 'pointless, grandiose gesture' that changes nothing.

You miss my point: shedding a few papers will ease the Sky buyout. It isn't like the other redtops NI own won't take up the slack, in any case.

Just read the James Murdoch statement regarding his closure of the NOW, and a finer example of righteous and self-serving hypocrisy as he tosses the lot under the bus and off the sled for the wolves, cannot be imagined.
