tweakabelle -> Arrest Bush II for War Crimes - Human Rights Watch (7/12/2011 1:42:35 AM)

Newly released, a comprehensive 107-page report "Getting Away with Torture: The Bush Administration and Mistreatment of Detainees" urges Pres Obama to begin investigating his predecessor G W Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and other senior Bush II administration figures for possible prosecution for war crimes. A press release outlining the report's main findings can be found here.

"There are solid grounds to investigate Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Tenet for authorizing torture and war crimes," said Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch. "The US has a legal obligation to investigate these crimes," Roth said. "If the US doesn't act on them, other countries should."

Should GWB and his pals face investigation? Are they guilty of being responsible for human rights abuses under their watch? Is this the best manner for the US to put unfortunate episodes such as Abu Ghraib or practices such as 'water-boarding' behind it forever? Are these prosecutions needed for the US to restore its reputation in the human rights area internationally?

Looking forward to hearing your views ........

Waste of tax payer time and money. They would never get convicted because of the *very* strong defense of Presidential signatories which were in place at the time.

No, because in the USA we have a presumption of innocence. They are not guilty unless and until a jury says they have been proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

No, because it won't work. The best way to put these issues behind us is to learn from our mistakes and make such practices absolutely illegal under any and all circumstances. Torture is barbaric (unless it's consented to then it's just hawt.)

No. Having our gutless Congress actually pass laws making such actions illegal AND getting rid of the fucking P.A.T.R.I.O.T act would go a long way to show we, as a nation, are serious about human and humane rights.

No, No,  and did I mention No?

erieangel -> RE: Arrest Bush II for War Crimes - Human Rights Watch (7/12/2011 5:59:47 AM)

The only way Bush and Co. will ever be investigated for war crimes is if another country initiated the proceedings. I haven't heard of that happening yet, so it probably won't.

It might not be totally out of the question erieangel. This is from the HRW website:

"In February 2011, Bush cancelled a trip to Switzerland, where alleged victims of torture had intended to file a criminal complaint against him. An investigation implicating US officials in torture is under way in Spain. Documents made public by Wikileaks revealed that US pressure on Spanish authorities to drop the case has continued under the Obama administration."

A number of Israeli politicians and military officials have had to alter/cancel their travel plans for similar reasons.

An investigation aimed at a prosecution will never happen here in the US and the vast majority of people here in the US could not care less about an international investigation…In fact they will think it hypocritical.

Too true Butch....hypocritical ,just as it was when my country codified torture and used a metaphor calling it "enhanced interrogations".
The United States of America should never have gone down that path.....no matter the threat against it.When one fights monsters one should take care that one does not,in the process of that fight, become a monster oneself .

Termyn8or -> RE: Arrest Bush II for War Crimes - Human Rights Watch (7/12/2011 9:13:24 AM)

Especially when one turned them into monsters.

T^T

That's a whole other debate, isn't it?

I completely agree. This is too serious to let it turn into some red vs blue clusterfuck.

Look forward, not backward imo.

That said, when the chimp's last act as the decider was signing an autopardon to make sure himself and his organ grinder wouldn't be prosecuted by any future US government, you do wonder if the partisan thing might not just be a deliberate distraction from the fact that he knew he was taking the fucking piss all along.

Mike I agree with you completely...My point is some things are worth discussing because they are possible...prosecuting Bush is not.

Hypocritical comes in because the majority of the western world demanded Bush and the US take the lead in fighting terrorism then complained on how it was done… All the while the majority of the boys and girls losing their lives were Americans.

If they wanted it done differently then they should have done it themselves.

Yeah but sometimes you just have to let the past be the past.

What, like monkeyboy did when he deposed and executed the foreign state premier who'd once tried to kill his dad, you mean?

IIRC nobody demanded that the US take the lead, the US took the lead because it was attacked by terrorists. The US got global sympathy after 9/11...it was only when they moved to invade Iraq that the rest of the world took issue.

Yeah, and made a big spectacle of it on TV. We as a nation had the gall to complain about parades in the street celebrating 9/11 then a few years later we execute a man on TV for the America Fuck Yeah crowd to cheer on.

kdsub -> RE: Arrest Bush II for War Crimes - Human Rights Watch (7/12/2011 11:26:09 AM)

That is crap...a good portion of those killed in the trade center were European nationals...Terrorism has not been an exclusive American problem yet we are doing the majority of fighting for others.

The thing that i don't remember anybody who was bitching about that mentioning back in '01 (or since) is the happy arabs dancing and waving their kalashnikovs around like a middle eastern coke advert were all Palestinians.
Can't imagine why they wouldn't like America, can you?
