Lockedaway which is it...did you pay the illegals a "very fair wage" or did you hire them because you "needed cheap labor"?

Both!  I didn't pay my skilled carpenter/mason/electrician/plumber/cabinet maker...yes, he does all of that and more...$55.00 per hour to dig a ditch.  I paid $10.00 per hour to anyone that would take the job...high school kid, the people hanging out at McDonald's, etc.  So...did I use illegal alien labor?  I probably did.  Do I regret it?  No.  Like I said, if my government is not going to protect the borders, I am going to do business on the playing field they have allowed to exist.

Just so you know, however, you can't rent an apartment from me without having a valid, New Jersey driver's license.

You are probably a sub contractor without a license.... Like Joe the Plumber

Yep. And he most definitely does not carry the legally required insurances either so he avoids the pesky annual audits that would uncover his sleazy ways of hiring illegals or paying people cash under the table, which in itself is highly illegal.

Lot's of those bottom feeders in the construction industry, thankfully we live in Maine and the majority of all reputable tradesmen have their licensing and their employee situation aboveboard and in order. It not only protects us, it protects the homeowner from any liability, which is so blatantly obvious lockedaway doesn't care about at all. I feel sorry for the people that hire you, they are opening themselves wide up for a disaster.  Don't you clients ask you for proof of liability and comp insurance at the start of a project? Don't the banks that are financing high end projects insist on it? or are you really not as big of a deal as you say, because that happens here every time, the bank wants proof of all of that prior to even breaking ground or starting excavation work.  What exactly do you do lockedaway? You can't be a GC and be this careless...can you?

Well, in Canada, and most of the rest of the western world, 0% of bankruptcies are because of medical debt. Just something to consider.

If the same criteria is used, I bet there are. Does the government pay your spouse's salary for the 6 months he is recovering from triple bypass?

Canadian Disability

What is the Canada Pension Plan disability benefit?

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability benefit is a monthly payment. It is available to people who contributed recently to the Canada Pension Plan while they worked, and then became unable to work at any job on a regular basis because of a disability. The primary purpose is to replace a portion of employment earnings for people who recently paid into the CPP. There are also benefits for children if at least one parent qualifies for the CPP disability benefit.

A CPP disability benefit is not approved on the basis of which disability or disease you have, but on how the medical condition and its treatment affect your ability to work at any job on a regular basis.

No, sounds more like black salary which is a form of money laundering. Be careful with that one or your screenname could become literal.

We have disability insurance in the US as well. It pays a portion of the salary. Loss of adequate compensation during recovery was listed as one of the causes of medical bankruptcy. It exists in Canada as well, which was the point I was making to the poster who claimed 0% medical related bankruptcies in Canada.
