My two Belgian tervurens and one Border collie are at my feet right now. We aren't so much owner/pet as members of the same team. They are part of what makes it possible for me to live on my rural property. And they are insanely beautiful to look at. Thanks Rocket, Rule, and Eddie Baby!

I had a cat who would ponder a problem & then figure out the solution. I'd watch her actually thinking about it.

Most of my dogs have not been brilliant, but they have certainly been lovable. They have enriched my life like few humans have ever done. I had a poodle who was untrained when I got her. It occurred to me that she would understand commands that I taught her whether the English word I used for this command fit the command or not. So when I told her to "Sit", she would get on her hind legs & dance. She was a wonderful wonderful friend to me.

When I got Spike, he had been feral. He had no clue what it was to be a pet, nor what play was. He knew no commands at all. All he knew how to do was to survive. So I started completely from scratch. Mind you, I'd never really been able to train a dog & believed that I wasn't any good at it. But I was out of work due to a broken hand, so I had all the time in the world to devote to him. The first few weeks, we were attached by a leash; wherever I went, he had to go; whatever he got, he had to get from me; he couldn't escape & go hide from me. At night, I would crate him, then when we got up in the morning, back on the leash til bedtime. He began to be less fearful & he started to understand what was expected of him. He became completely devoted to me.

I added the rest of his name, "The Amazing Wonder Dog" one day when he suddenly began to "get it". He learned command after command, a new one every 20 minutes or so. I kept calling my friend, all excited, saying, "You won't believe what he just did!!" And he did it not for treats but because it pleased me. Pretty soon, I started adding more commands. When I would give him a new command, he'd look at me as if to say, "I don't know what it is that you want me to do, but I really really really want to do that for you & I will as soon as I figure it out!"

So we taught each other. One of the big lessons he taught me was to not raise my voice with him. It didn't make him want to do something more, in fact it would sort of make him deaf to what it was I wanted from him. But if I lowered my voice to just above a whisper, he'd do it in an instant. He became my anxiety dog, which is pretty amazing considering when I got him he was riddled with anxieties & at first, I had to calm him when he'd panic. After awhile though, when I'd have an anxiety attack, he'd come to me & let me rub his ear until I calmed. He went to the dentist with me to help with my extreme severe dental phobia.

He truly was The Amazing Wonder Dog!! But he didn't get any of the major philosophers in the least.

my westie boy is seriously smart, but seriously submissive and loves me to bits. He brings his toys to me to play 'tug-o-war', but because he's such a beta dog as soon as I start pulling the thing he just hands it over, lol

My bichon girl is a little swine though. She has me trained to feed her her favourite snack on demand. What dog begs for carrots??

Oh, and I can't leave coffee in mugs on low tables and then leave the room cos I will return to a bichon with a seriously innocent expression on her face, and a huge coffee-coloured stain on her muzzle [:)]

My Gaia is a very smart girlie and though Borders are at first place in the topten of most intelligent dogs.. I dare to say, Podenco's are just as or even smarter :)
I had a pack of them once... 5 at the same time, with a dachshound and a Galgo Espagnol (wich is the Spanish equivalent of a Greyhound)
I loved the interaction in my pack and by that experience I can easily say, I'm expert on dogbehaviour (like Cesar Milan) and specialized in podenco's.

The love for Gaia is so deep I even had her tattood on my back.
The picture I took myself, the drawing I made myself and so I can say, I have a fairly unique tattoo. Unique in 2 ways, b/c it is the back of her head.

So Yeah!!!! Let's talk dogs (and cats) I 'm an all animal fan!

My mother in law had tervurens. Great animals and smart. But herders to an extreme. I'd stand in the kitchen chatting to her while the guys were in the workshop and the dog would nudge me repeatedly until he had pushed me into the far corner, near her. Then he'd sit there happy because his little herd was safe.

My pooch Shiloh was really smart.....and it didn't take him long to learn something new.  He knew what the Golden Arches meant.....hamburger!!!!!  And when it came to commands, he really didn't get the whole "stay" and "heel" thing, but he understood "this way" for left, "that way" for right, "wait for me" to stop.  He had one heck of a nose on him, he'd catch a scent and off he'd go.  That was really the only reason why I'd keep him on a leash outside......but it was a loooooong one.  Out at my parents place on the country, I would just let him go.  He knew the yard limits, and never left it.  He bonded with my dad really well, which was odd, he hated men as a rule because he was beaten by men when he was a puppy.  He was part chow, so everyone who saw him was scared of him.......he was pretty impressive when he was in full foof......he had the mane that a chow has, and a hackle that started at the tip of his nose and went all the way down his tail.  I saw him simply foof one day, and the two guys walking down the sidewalk changed their mind about walking by him.  He never bit anyone, but was extremely protective of me.

Once I got KB, the two were inseperable.  And they were as thick as thieves......no treats in the kitchen were safe......KB would open the cupboards, knock them down and Shiloh would rip open the package and they'd enjoy their booty.  When I had to put Shiloh down, KB actually mourned for 2 weeks, til I got the 2 kittens.  It broke my heart to see KB looking for him.  He was a great dog, and I still miss him.

i've had to put my dog on a tie-out, too, because he was such a pro at figuring out a way out of any fence. now that he's older, though, he's not interested in being outside as much, so he doesn't try his daring escapes anymore unless it's thundering or someone's doing fireworks (it's july 22 -- why are they still doing fireworks? in the city?) when i take him home, he goes out without a leash to wander the acres; he learned years ago where to go and where not to go.
and he likes to try to get away with things if he can. i have definitely watched him think his way through a situation.
my doggie also understands "wait for me," if he gets ahead, he'll turn around and look at me, or he'll just slow down until i catch up to him. but that's another thing that doesn't happen so much anymore, now that he's getting older. =( so saaaadddd...
he usually likes to walk in a single-file line behind me. haha
and he's VERY good at figuring out who's bad and who isn't. when someone's on the outside of the house, he goes ballistic, and people can't believe it when they come in and find that he's a sweet little dog who wants to be petted forever. (he also knows "shhhh!" means "be quiet." =p) he'll warm up to them and next time they come back, they get a much better reception. but there are some people that he never warms up to, and those people have usually ended up being very negative presences in my life.

DesFIP -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (7/22/2011 7:17:43 AM)

Lilly, I found my first golden was a great judge of character also. She was sweet and loving with almost everyone. Those she didn't like though, I knew were not trustworthy. She didn't usually warm up to men immediately, but did when she met The Man. That's one of the reasons I knew he was the right one.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (7/22/2011 7:28:37 AM)

Dogs have almost always adored me on sight. When I was first getting to know a new boyfriend, he gave me directions to his home & warned me about his 2 German Shepherds. He said that I should honk the horn when I got there--pre-cell phone days--& he would come out & walk me inside so that they would know I was ok. I got there & forgot to roll my window up. These 2 big dogs come running up to the car & jump up & put their big paws on the door & stick their noses in, got a whiff of me & started wagging their tails. They let me pet them & then led me up to the front door. When I knocked & Art opened the door, he was shocked because they'd never done that with anyone else. Kids, dogs & old people love me. I trust my girl with that too, if she backs away from somebody, I am dead careful, not so sure about the boy, he'll tart up to anybody who's got a treat.

Ah yes.......one of my FAVOURITE subjects!

Tonight I will post photos of my three girls.....Nala aka Velcro Dog, Sandy aka The Ditzy Blonde and Sophie aka Queen Sophia.

Dogs have always been a huge part of my life. I am always happiest when I share my home with a good dog.......or three. Cats bore me. They are just kinda there. Horses don't fit well in the house. So dogs it is. I will always have dogs. The day I cannot properly care for and have, a dog, I wish to die.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (7/22/2011 4:34:57 PM)

Lizard and Bo has 2 cats and 2 dogs.

Dogs are Little Bit and Sushi.  I have been threatening to cook some Korean one of these days.

Cats are Binx and Holly.  Holly's owner is coming to pick her up.  Binx does the hell she wants to.

we've always had dogs, too. out where we lived, people would dump dogs they didn't want so we got a lot of them that way. but one of my earliest memories is noticing that one of the dogs ate all of her food but left the carrot bits behind. =p haha
i can't really imagine life without a dog; the one time i didn't have them around when when i was at my old school and in a dorm. i got pet rats because i missed having something furry to play with. hahaha =p
pet rats are a lot like little bitty dogs, i found out.
i like how interactive they are, i like that they want to spend time with you and learn things and go adventuring with you. i really love being outdoors and going hiking, and i love taking a doggie with me (or a pet rat in a pocket, haha)

i was just playing peekaboo with the doggie =p he makes this super-intense staring face and then jumps on me or runs away, which is hilarious. ^_^ and i found two new sound effects that he REALLY likes, so we've got a new game. he also just picked up how to toss his toys to me. ^_^ who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

While I love both of my babies equally I do think that my aussie mix (Taylor) is a little bit smarter than my Jack/Beagle mix (Daisy)... It's not even that she's dumb she's just terrible stubborn.

Taylor is a little sneak. He loves soft dirt so he will start to dig a hole and then wait for his sister to get caught finishing the dig. He understands pretty much everything we tell him. It got so bad when we said the word walk that the SO and I started spelling it and the little snot figured out what we were talking about. He knows what time for bed means and he brings one of his toys to bed with him every night. Sometimes he beats us to bed he walks halfway down the hallway with his toy in his mouth and looks at us like it's bedtime move it! He's very good about picking up his toys when he is done with them. When he doesn't want a certain toy anymore he picks it up and puts it in his bucket. On the other hand if one of us picks up the toys to vacuum by the time we are done vacuuming we find a trail of toys scattered throughout the house.

His sister Daisy tends to spend more of her energy for evil. Those poor squirrels and birds are pretty much prey. She's caught a squirrel and a few birds luckily we were around to save them. She likes to play with them more than anything. It's not uncommon as we live on the bottom floor to find her batting a spider with her paw until it is completely dazed and confused. She's an escape artist and pretty crafty. She tends to look at the SO and others like you are not my mom so FU. She is my cuddle bug. If I'm feeling horrible she is by my side. In fact she has the tendency to just follow me around the apt as I clean or move from room to room. She understands the commands like stop, wait, walk, let's go... alright is a trigger word for them too.. etc... but unlike her brother if she catches a scent I am hell bent on getting her to listen. Taylor will follow the command without a problem.

I lurve my dawgies, Ive had four during my life, two golden labs from the age of two till mid twenties, then moved here and had a huge assed shepard/husky called tonya who was the biggest out of all of them, but she had been abused by her previous owner and was scared of mirrors, rain, cameras, umbrellas and drunks. We got her at aged two and loved her to death, she died happy at age 14.
We got Boo from a shelter, at six weeks, an abandoned litter, it was love at first sight. She is a lab/border collie cross and is sleek sleek sleek furred, so sleek she slides off things. She talks and has us all trained, but she is my gurly and thinks shes a lap cat, who is entitled to half my bed, and half my pillows, and will crawl under the covers in the winter.
She is the apple of my eye and often under my desk five minutes after I get up in the morning and follows me everywhere. She has a passion for the kids soft toys from their childhood and will treat it like a puppy for a week or two then rip it to shreds and play toss with it till its just shreds of material
She loves to chase skunks and squirrels, cant be bothered with the cats or birds and if the bathroom door is open she loves to jump into the bath until some one showers and baths her(comes from several skunk fights that went stinkingly bad)

I love my  Axel.  He loves car rides, kids and anyone who comes into the home is family to him.  He hates water, which sucks since he's supposed to be a hunting dog.  What kind of Pointer doesn't like the water?  He won't go near a lake or river no matter how much I try to entice him to.  Weird dog.

I just whipped up a batch of banana bread and since both dogs know they are to not be in the kitchen while I cook they both layed juuuust on the edge of the kitchen floor where it meets the dining room watching me.

soul2share -> RE: Why the hell dont we ever talk about dogs? (7/22/2011 11:27:10 PM)

I have found that both my dog and my cats are great character judges.  Like you, Lily, I have found that anyone that my pets don't like will turn out to be a negative experience.  So when I say you have to pass muster from my furbabies, I really mean it!

We had Saint Bernards, 3 at a time, growing up.  The only male would sit for the entire newscast from ABC when Peter Jennings was anchor.  Something about his voice......and Travis knew when 6:30 was.  He'd hightail it into the living room and sit right on front of the TV.  If it wasn't on, he'd go get someone to turn it on for him.

I've usually had pets, dogs or cats in my life.   The only exception was when I was in college, and in the Army.  But even then, I got  to know all the K9's, and could actually command all but 2 at Ord, and I never had a bit of problem getting along with K-9's.  We had them at the hospital, and they were all big babies.  As hard as it is at the end of our time together, I will always have a furbaby, be it feline or canine in my life.  They fill a hole in me that can't be filled otherwise.
