pahunkboy -> RE: Movies recorded on a DVR are copywrited? (7/28/2011 6:10:34 PM)

the rights to "Happy Birthday to You" and its assets were sold to The Time-Warner Corporation. In March 2004, Warner Music Group was sold to a group of investors led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. The company continues to insist that one cannot sing the "Happy Birthday to You" lyrics for profit without paying royalties: in 2008, Warner collected about $5000 per day ($2 million per year) in royalties for the song.[2], pp. 4,68 This includes use in film, television, radio, anywhere open to the public, or even among a group where a substantial number of those in attendance are not family or friends of whoever is performing the song. For this reason, most restaurants or other public party venues will not allow their employees to perform the song in public, instead opting for other original songs or cheers in honor of the birthday celebrant

WRONG

You have no right to determine that or to place judgement.
I use free anti-virus and malware programs. (avast and malwarebytes)
I pay for Netflix. I use Hulu and Fancast, also free.
I watch TEDtalks.
I use OpenOffice.
I do not have downloaded music, or movies, or tv shows.
And once again the only images I have are of family/friends.

PA, perhaps you should go back and read the thread, what people are doing is explaining to DBG over and over and over again that what she is doing IS ILLEGAL and how and why.  She keeps trying to create scenerios as to why it may be legal what she is doing.  People are telling her no.

Just because she was able to do what she was doing, and nothing was stopping her as it seems to be now, doesn't mean it was legal when she was doing it before.   I mean hell, you can walk out of a store with something you didn't pay for and not get caught -- doesn't make it legal.

One word- Netflix. $7.99 a month and you can keep favorite movies in your queue to watch over and over.

UPDATE:

I just found out I can have unlimited recording space without deleting anything. According to my satellite provider, all I need is an external hard drive. Problem solved - and not illegally.

IMO she ought to just get a 2nd DVR.     Then she would have ample space to store her favs.

littlewonder -> RE: Movies recorded on a DVR are copywrited? (7/28/2011 6:20:25 PM)

maybe i'm stupid but if you have unlimited space on your dvr then why do you need to have an external hard drive??

angelikaJ -> RE: Movies recorded on a DVR are copywrited? (7/28/2011 6:20:39 PM)

No you're not stupid. I don't have unlimited space on my DVR. That's why I need an external hard drive.

I checked into that once. Only a limited number of movies were available for download. The rest were physical copies sent to the home address and had to be returned before ordering others. One of my roommates is afraid to download movies from netflix because he thinks he'll get a virus.

barelynangel -> RE: Movies recorded on a DVR are copywrited? (7/28/2011 6:37:17 PM)

You don't download from netflix, it streams. But you are correct, their streaming video selection isn't very vast.

They are constantly adding movies, and the collection is pretty damned good at this point. They also have you rate movies, so that they can recommend ones that you might like based on your tastes (I confuse the hell out of it, because I will go from 'Romancing the Stone' to 'Children of the Corn, Part V' to 'Presumed Innocent' [:D]). They also have a growing collection of TV shows, although Hulu has the older ones that I like best.

As for getting a virus, I've been using Netflix every day for months and have yet to have an issue.

Can these streamed movies be saved on an external hard drive?

barelynangel -> RE: Movies recorded on a DVR are copywrited? (7/28/2011 6:55:42 PM)

I don't think so.  You click on a movie it does something and then buffers and hit play.  I don't remember seeing an option to  to save the movies at all.  They were in my que and i could watch them whenever i wanted.  When they went away from the streaming video i had the option of ordering them to view at home for as long as i wanted.

DBG, i don't get it, why don't you just buy movies you want to keep and watch forever?  IS buying something you want to own so badly you steal it, really that big of a deal?  You seem to desperately be trying to get them without paying for them, while that may be your integrity, i really don't get why?
