I love rice.  White rice, basmati, jasmine, brown, wild rice - - rice is wonderful.

I make spanish rice with saffron and wine.

I make risotto - with prawns or chicken or (and) asparagus, mushroom, red bell peppers....

I put leftover rice in home made soup

Or I toss leftover rice in a wok with peanut and/or sesame oil, soy sauce, veggies, etc, for a stir fry.

Curry rice is yummy.

All rice is yummy.

All of that does sound pretty freaking good. Especially those two.

I should have a rice dinner party some day, lol.

You mentioned sushi.  That's a must around here.

I love rice. But alas, I'm not supposed to eat it.

I won't say I could eat it everyday because I've never tried but I sure would like to.

If I could go to my local Chinese restaurant and eat only the sushi, without feeling like I was greedy, I would.

I'm looking forward to homemade Alaskan sushi fresh from the stream when I get there. After I get camp set up, fishing for Salmon will be the first thing I do. I hope I can time the season right with the move.

I love the basmati rice with simply butter and salt. I love the Nashiki rice for stir frys. I use a mix of white and brown rice in rice puddings.

I love the arboro rice for my mushroom risotto.

6 cups chicken stock, 5 tablespoons olive oil, 1 lb sliced baby bellas mushrooms, 1 lb sliced baby button mushrooms, 2 minced shallots, 2 cups Arborio rice, 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 1/4 sea salt to taste, black pepper to taste,, 6 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Saute the mushrooms in the butter, then saute the garlic and shallots in the same pan. Mix oil, stock and rice in a pan, bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, stir often. When most of the stock has been absorbed stir in the rice, the garlic, salt and pepper. Serve with the freshly grated Parmesan.

If you like, you can also saute some fresh shrimp and or baby scallops in a mix of butter, olive oil and garlic and stir them in with the mushrooms.

there's a place here that serves obnoxiously cheap veggie lettuce wraps with rice made with tea, tomatoes, and something else green; not quite sure what. it's so good.

Green as in green and leafy? Or herby? Or crunchy?

You can get them here in Krogers which has a small Sushi bar staffed with actual Japenese gentlemen. The other green thing is usually either avacado, zucchini or cucumber. All of them are awesome.

I'd like to try that, too. So many varieties, I doubt I'd grow bored of it.  I had sushi last Friday and going again next week.  I've only made rolls at home once, and they turned out pretty good.

Oh I dunno, I think sushi is a safe greedy indulgence!

That is so cool you are moving there.  Two states that have always been a must more me to visit - Maine and Alaska. Not because they are at polar opposite ends of the country, but because something in me has just drawn me to explore them.  I did Maine a few years ago.  Almost followed it up with Alaska but the friend I'd be traveling with didn't want to go. My other friend said "Sure, and Alaskan cruise would be fun!" but I'm not interested in a cruise - I want to be on land.

Oh I don't have a problem eating plates of that stuff..What I meant was eating it all and not leaving any for the rest of the diners.

Maine would probably be real nice, especially during winter.

I've also always wanted to go to Washington State. I love the old forest there. Really beautiful. Montana's really nice also.

Oh the deliciousness that is rice! I simply love it.

The heavenly scent wafting through the house when Basmati or Jasmine rice are cooking, the creamy texture of risotto, the crunchy crust from Persian rice ...

Rice is one of our staples, the rice cooker permanently lives on the counter and is one of my most prized kitchen gadgets.
Rice is so versatile, there are so many different varieties, it does well as the main part of a meal, but it also makes a wonderful supporting ingredient.
I have been known to get up in the middle of the night to nosh on cold leftover rice.

I have bought little presses that makes onigiri in the form of Snoopy, and the kids love to take those to school.

The only rice I dislike is Milchreis, the German version of rice pudding. The boys however love it.

As a vegan/health nut, rice is a mainstay of my diet.  My electric rice cooker never leaves the kitchen counter either, and I went 8 months once without a stove, just the rice cooker and a hot plate to boil water for tea. This morning for breakfast I'm cooking brown rice, with garlic, ginger, turmeric, and black pepper. The last 20 minutes I'll throw in a large bunch of collard greens, fresh from the backyard garden. Zucchini or green beans if they survive this summer.   Winter time I'll put yams, sweet potatoes, or carrots in at the beginning.

Ha!  Well, if at a restaurant, they can always order more.  My friends & I will do that when we go out - we just leave a menu at the table.  If the food runs out and we're jonesing for more, we keep it coming.  Yummy stuff, for sure.

My surprise, though, was tasting sushi rice on its own - pretty nasty stuff, at least at the place I ordered it from to make my own teka rolls.  Tasted just fine IN the roll, but I'll pass on the solo gig.  Bleh.

Neither one would be what I'd want for a permanent home. Too many roads.. If you can drive up to the property, I don't want it.

They're on my list for visits though.

I am with you Icarys. I grew up in MT, and I live in WA now. Too goddamn many people in both places now. But where do you go to get away from people? Just got back from Alaska, and it seemed crowded too.

Last night first I cooked the onion in a fair bit of oil, then tossed the dry rice with it, tossing for a couple of minutes. Then the water and put the lid on. But I forgot to add any salt. That I blame on reading with one hand and cooking with the other.

Can I have that recipe. A friend gave me a several five pound bags of dried Michagan black cherries. I'd love a few new ways to use them.

Anchorage and Fairbanks are fairly crowded. Many of the coastal cities during tourists season are crowded. Which actually because of the eco-tourism is year round. The amount of people living there though for the size of the state is extremely small.

698,473 for a state around 1/6th the size of the lower 48 (That's COMBINED). LOTS of room . :>

Moose and rice dish I'd like to try.

Oh and something mildly interesting..while I was looking for the Pop. of Alaska I checked out all of the rest and looked at their growth. District of Columbia was the only place with a decline.

~Fast Reply~

I like rice, but never thought of being so "adventurous" with it, lol. For me, I mix some soy sauce and wasabi, or salsa for spanish rice.

I LOVE red beans and rice, but don't know how to make it, so I don't get to have it often. I could probably, with some good recipes, live on almost only rice.

So...

Anyone have a good red beans and rice recipe that isn't too difficult? Currently, I'm not somewhere that I can make overly difficult foods.
