LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Fat People (8/13/2011 7:33:43 PM)

I don't make excuses for being fat. But I also do everything that I can to stay as healthy as possible. My mother was a walking medical disaster & I refuse to be her. I was at physical therapy awhile back & I was having some really odd swelling of my lower extremities. The Doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong. The Physical Therapist told me I should stop eating chips. I don't eat chips. I also try to take in around 1200-1500 mg of sodium per day, sometimes a little more, usually less. I get most of my sodium in vegetables & yogurt. She made an assumption based on my weight. Because everybody knows that if you're fat, you eat poorly. And everybody also knows that the inverse must be true: if you eat healthy & exercise you won't be overweight. And it's absolutely not true that obesity equals unhealthy. It is true that a lot of obese people also have other health problems.

I'd like to be smaller so that I could move around better & quicker. I've lost 22 lbs in the last month, since the mysterious maladies left me. I'm no longer in pain, so I can move more. I want to be smaller, don't get me wrong. I like being smaller. I'm just saying that I don't have health issues that are caused by my being fat. And I have all the results to prove that.

They thought for sure I must have arthritis in my hips because of my weight & the pain I was having. The Doctor was so sure of that diagnosis that he didn't bother to xray to confirm. I was in so much pain that I just went along with him when he said he could stop the pain. When the pain didn't stop, I went to another Doctor who did take x-rays & I have never seen more perfect hip joints, even in a much younger woman.

I could go on & on, but I won't. Perhaps I am the exception. But if I am an exception, how many more are there out there? And how many of your assumptions are incorrect?

was thinking more along the lines of the 'welcome' message the slogan portrays, but that works too.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Fat People (8/13/2011 7:41:34 PM)

I have some friends who are genuinely fat, and it's worse as they age. (We all know that in the US an older person is only useful as far as Medicare will pay, right?) A dear friend was dying, as it turned out, from cancer. But he was fat, so his doctors saw an old fat man, and said he was short of breath from smoking. Well, he never smoked in his life.

Being fat is not an optimum situation. It's appalling when medical professionals are allowed to let prejudice get in the way of their judgement.

Oooo!! Just name the place and time. I'll be there! :D

Almost anywhere will do but my favorite for extra punch would be right in-front of a weight-watchers office. Maybe we could gain a few supporters as well.

I might even make bumper stickers that we could put on our asses.
"Fat is Where it's At... Viva la Resistance!" or how about "Pound for Pound, Fat People Make Better Lovers!"

Whatdayathink? [:D]

Poor eating habits and lack of physical activity are at an all-time high. Type II diabetes is being seen in children whereas just a couple of decades ago it was unheard of. There may be people, such as yourself, who are not in the desirable weight range but are healthy nevertheless. But that isn't the norm. Obesity does create health risks, it's been scientifically proven. The genetics aspect either ups or helps to minimize the risk factors.

Well I think that is one thing that is important to remember, obesity do create health risks, but being obese do not mean that one is unhealthy. I have been checked out by doctors and I have no health problems from being overweight, I am in perfect condition, the only thing the doctor worries about is that I was born with to shallow joints and that over time the extra padding might affect those joints, other than that I am fine.

I am not denying that there are risk factors with being overweight, however some have linked the craze over overweight to the Satanic sacrifice crazes of the 1970s and 1980s, it is talked about as if you are about ready to drop if you have a few pounds to much, which is not true, you are in grater risk of some illnesses, but being overweight is not a given that you will get them. Also research have shown that someone who exercises and is overweight is more healthy than someone who is thin but out of shape, off course the most healthy thing is being reasonably thin and in shape, but it is actually more important for the health aspect of it to exercise than to be thin.

I wish you well

My health should ALWAYS be a priority for me. It is my RESPONSIBILITY not only to myself but to those I have agreed to be responsible TO and FOR. I believe that 100%, regardless of what anyone that may be fat and trying to justify their own shit, has to say about it to make themselves feel better about said shit.

You hit it on the head....YOUR health, not mine, not the guy next door, nor the person who constantly eats at McDonalds...but yours.

I think too many grow concerned about the appearance of others.  If I am carrying 20 extra pounds, that is between me and my ass.  If you don't like the roundness of my ass, don't look.  J-Lo works out every day and it hasn't made a dent in her behind, and yet she was voted sexiest woman this year.

We are a visual society and if someone doesn't fall into our scheme of vision, then it must not be correct.  I'm not making excuses, merely pointing out that not everyone uses the same stick for measurement and to lump entire groups into one pile or the other, reminds me of the Dr Seuss story, Sneetches.

The OP made it clear that overweight people offended her, she felt they were unable to master themselves, let alone another.   If she had stated that there could be exception to this, or that some may have limited wind, or ability due to their size, I wouldn't be posting here.  The wording made it clear, to her it was offensive, period.  I would have reacted if she said blonde women are stupid, or brunettes have bad acne.   It was a generalized comment based on appearance.

Seriously what world do you live in. Anger is a natural human response, anger in itself is not bad, undiscriminated attacks on one whole group is. Tell me do you never feel anger? Get off your high horse, let us see how you would react if you where told time and time again that due to some aspect with your being that you where lazy, no good, undesirable and generally a second class citizen, then let us see how long your holier than thou attitude about anger lasts.

I wish you well

I use that Seuss book often when discussing these very issues. I've lived through a few appearance fads now. I was considered too thin when I was young, too fat now & in between there were a few more. And I'm sure at some point, I might even be considered just right, if I live long enough!! LOL

One thing I know for sure. As long as we keep making excuses and pretending that being fat is okay....aka not always unhealthy....and get all emotional about the issue instead of proactively treating it like the health epidemic it is, our health care costs are going to continue to spin out of control and younger and younger people will be diagnosed with health problems usually only associated with middle aged people.

Heavens forbid society sees being fat as okey, we can not have those uppity fat folks feeling good about themselves now can we. And actually being fat is not always unhealthy, being fat means a greater risk of some illnesses, but it is not a guarantee that one will get them, in fact many fat people live very long healthy lives. Now I agree that obesity is a epidemic in modern Western society and it should be addressed, however making obese people feel like they are worth nothing and are second class citizens are not the way to go to do that.

One should not have to justify anything being overweight, it is not a crime, people do not have a duty to be thin and people should try to accept themselves and love them self no matter how we look or how much we weight. In addition do you not understand that attitudes like yours is not part of the solution, it is part of the problem. Many people are overweight becouse of depression or because they overeat as comfort, what do you think happen when people like you tell them that feeling in any ways good about them self is making excuses and being overweight is never ok and saying otherwise is just a justification? Well they eat more.

I wish you well

I agree, and your story go to show that the prejudice against overweight people go to the point where it endangers life and limb. In Norway during a survey 40 percent of doctors said they would love to be able to down prioritize overweight people and smokers from who they treated, in USA several clinics do not accept overweight people at all. If this kind of discrimination had been directed at any other group then there would be an outrage in society, but discriminating against people become they are fat is seen by so many as being okey because they just do not understand the issue or it's underlaying causes.

I wish you well
