Seems obvious to me that there must be a section of gun owners who feel big and tough because they are packing.

Seems obvious to me that what seems "obvious" to you exists only in your apparently puerile imagination.

K.

oh my mistake then, I didn.t know that carrying a gun has no effect on your psyche whatsoever
pompous twat
common sense tells you that you are going to act and think differently when you are carrying a lethal weapon to when you are not. Now in some cases it is going to be a good change ie. you're going to be extra careful but there are also going to be times when it is a bad change

There are some few of the lot of people who are packing that use the situation to make themselves feel more powerful.

To ascribe that purpose and sentiment to the whole crowd is even more fatuous than it is facile.

People use their cars and their job title and a host of other things to feel more powerful too. But that doesn't describe
every driver and every boss.

I didn't say the whole crowd, I said some, it wasn't a long post to read but don't let that stop you from calling me facile and fatuous.

I realize you're only a "cyber" master, so I guess it's not very critical in your case, but just for appearance's sake I think you should study up on the male/female bits so you can tell them apart.

Bad guys don`t know that our pups are such sweethearts. They see an unpredictable animal with a toothy end and they choose to move on. Just a dog barking sends fright/flight messages down the spine, for those up to no good.

That's it, really: a predator knows to pick his prey.

Good shoes don't outrun a tiger, they outrun the others running from the tiger.

And a pair of guard dogs will do a hell of a number on anyone that can't make a better living doing something else.

Personally, I don't have kids so keeping guns out of reach of them is no problem.

Having been shot by kids whose parents didn't own a gun, I would tend to disagree. Carry as much as you like, but don't leave ready for use anything that invites long-range accidents when you're not around. See, it's not the punk kids that got an early introduction to what is behind those statistics after they broke in and grabbed an unsecured rifle. It's me, for telling them not to keep playing with it.

"Teehee. Boom. Fuck, this thing was loaded?!?"

Priceless, just priceless.

I rarely carry, and when I do I am looking to make trouble. You got a problem with that just stay the fuck away from me. I don't shoot people for fucking my sinister or scratching my car, or taking my parking spot or even cranking up my stereo and blowing a tweeter. No stupid shit like that. The power of life nd death means more than these fucking toys.

In the last five years I have worn my sidearm about three times. I am EXTREMELY aware of it and make sure not to drink much or anything, I KNOW WHAT IT MEANS. You dan't take shit like this lightly. But I WILL kill if pressed. If I have to. With reason.

T^T

When is that rare occasion when you don't drink too much?

Oh, oh.........am I going to get shot now?

so i was wondering- of those people on here who are NOT anti-gun, what kind/kinds of guns do you have, and what do you think are the pros and cons of those particular ones? If that question shouldn't be posted here, or if there is a different place to post it so as not to piss everyone off, forgive me....that is not what i'm trying to do, i'm seriously interested in the answers.

I have four shotguns and an antique handgun, but I have never felt the need to use them for personal protection.

You assume that anybody who is not "anti-gun" is a gun owner.

I've never even properly held a gun in my hand, much less owned one.

I do subscribe to proper regulation of many things, guns included.

Some  person who has to close up a tavern or pub at 1-3 AM and walk to the car alone, etc., I can understand possibly wanting that utility.

I also think that some folks just live a fear-based life for not entirely good reason.

Nothing is perfect.

PS

The pros and cons of which gun for which purpose has been addressed  in several posts here. Actually reading through the thread might be of some help to you there.

Good, go for it.

And then live with it.

Nope. I'm not assuming any such thing, but if you're anti-gun, you're not AS likely to own one, so you're not AS likely to be able to give me your opinions on them. If you do, and are, fine.

As silly as some of you think it is to live, as you put it, a fear based life...some of us think you're pretty silly for thinking nothing bad is ever going to happen to you or your family. I hope nothing bad does. I hope nothing bad happens to me, either. You can live your life the way you choose, as I will. One of us is more prepared, that's all.

And i have read EVERY post in this thread. I'm not asking about which TYPE of gun, i.e. shotgun vs. handgun. I'm asking about particular models, and what you do or don't like about them. They're not all the same, you know.

Example-i own a Springfield XDM 40. I love it, i'm accurate with it, but it's a bit heavy to carry. Understand now?

concerning the "fear based life" remark....do you think anyone who is being robbed/raped/assaulted, etc., EVER thinks to themselves "God, i'm SO glad i don't have a gun!" ?

Indeed what occurs after taking the life of another human being is very like an unceasing plague hauntingly recalling visions you unsuccessfully try to justify. We may call it the unseen casualties of war or a rightful end for that bastard sneak thief that robbed and raped my sister or plundered my home. But we live with it every day of our lives and that is a hell of a price to pay especially if some coward congress man or woman sends us off to fight a war but refuses to fund it or allows us to win it.

Huh?  After reading your reply several times I still can't make any sense of it.  First, as I said, I have no kids.  There hasn't been anyone under the age of about 30 or so that has even been in my house in the last 8 or 10 years.  Unless juveniles actually break in, my "unsecured" guns won't be in the reach of any kids.  If they do break in while I am away the only thing that would keep the guns out of their hands would be something like a gun safe.  If you only use trigger locks they can take the guns anyway and worry about getting them unlocked later.

Now let's look at kids, or anyone else, that might break in while I am at home.  Since the topic that I was addressing was mainly concerning home invasion and personal protection the only way a gun would be of any use would be if it is "un-secured".  People that are bold enough to do a home invasion while the homeowners are there will probably already be armed in some manner.  And NONE of them are going to oblige you when you politely ask them, "Uh...excuse me...will you kindly wait just a moment while I get my keys, unlock my guns, load them, and arm myself?"

Now, that having been said, if people do have kids, or if people with kids are regular visitors in your house, then YES you do need to take extra precautions.  However, that simply does not fit my own circumstances.

Rule, you don't know me, and that's ok, but I promise you this, things that might haunt most people don't really bother me. I have led an interesting life, and killing a would be rapist that wants to steal from me, or hurt my animals or a loved one wouldn't haunt me in the lightest. I don't always like being this way, but I just am. I lived with a drug dealer, interesting life, that, and guns were second nature. Then a man who's career choices were part of an extended "family" if you follow, so I am not exactly unaware of the risks and outcome of certain situations.  I could kill a parasitic threat on my home/family/loved pets and walk over him and make a drink. Don't project how you might feel onto me.
