I lack your recent streak of restraint.
I was close to the she beast persona this afternoon, but I mellowed out some this evening.

I suppose I should care and try to do better.  But, I tried to find the shrugging smiley... and I gave up because I could care less.
When you read the same bullshit everyday, its not easy to remain unjaded. I unpacked some leather this afternoon, that helped.

Im also curious as to why others feel they have the right to ask demanding questions, or why they have the expectation of getting an answer.

Because they have low expectations and want the opportunity to take the piss. When they dont get it, they make dumarse assumptions

Something Im really going to have to work on.
its not you that needs to work on it hon

Reasonable to you, perhaps.  Most who live along the coast know this as basic knowledge.  And with the hurricane approaching, most TV's are turned to the weather channel.  Gotta keep an eye on the sky.  [;)]

You give humans a lot more credit than I do. [:D]

Anyways, I need to send you a personal mail.

5.9  That's a pretty good one to lose your virginity to.  On the upside, this probably covers the east coast, statistically, for another 50-75 years.  Being way overdue, as we are in my neck of the world, is kinda discomforting.

Looks more like the camera was tilted, cuz the horizon line looks uneven too. o.o

But isn't it time for the New Madrid Fault to go?

TheHeretic -> RE: Earthquake near DC (8/23/2011 7:38:39 PM)

The New Madrid might have rung the church bells in Boston, Aylee, but it isn't what I'd consider "east coast."  What's the interval range on that one?  It's been about 200 years.

I was more going with massive damage and it being unexpected. Most people (even in the state) do not equate Missouri with earthquakes.

They don't know anymore with that fault line. It does not move much, unlike the San Andreas fault line. However, I think the last report I read was next fifty years with a magnitude of over 6.0. Probably would destroy Memphis and break up the TVA area.

Probably because scientists consider the Atlantic coast possibilities for a tsunami very slim.

While I know that, just how many people have the geology education to know that?

Most people know that earthquakes can cause tsunamis and that is about it. Combine that with what happened in Japan not so long ago and I can see the concern people would have. I can see one or more of the agencies receiving a lot of worried phone calls and sending that release out to news stations for dissemination.

Putting it on their ticker seems a reasonable thing to do.

I just do not understand the feelings of "Christ on a crutch, can you believe what those idiots put on their ticker?"

Frankly I do not understand swearing to a sports guy either.

Oh I dunno, I thought it was reasonable, too.  It's been made clear in this thread that earthquakes are extremely rare for the east coast, so knowing about the Japan Tsunami, and the relatively small tsunami waves that reached the Southern California coast in February after the Chilean earthquake, I'm not sure how it can be basic knowledge that the same would not occur on the east coast.

True Tazzy.  Tsunamis typically originate from earthquakes epicentered out in the ocean.

That's quite true Aylee.  In the fact, the faultline through Memphis is the one that we always thought (and still do) will go off in a big way.   Faultines run through much of the U.S.  We've had a number of small quakes on the east coast, this was caused more damage (and alarm) due to it's greater magnitude than the previous, smaller ones.

True, but your average Joe who hasn't experienced earthquakes might not know that, so the media putting up a ticker about it is probably just their way of calming potential fears.

The media, unfortunately, contributed to the quake frenzy.  There were some very good and clear messages they were given by local emergency mgmt authorities.....and they decided instead to focus on the more dramatic images and "joe-on-the-street".   So now....... we have a lot of education to do with the public on what to do/how to react during a quake.

We kept notifying the media that if they were going to keep showing the helicopter images of people standing outside, to at least explain that unless their building was specifically evacuated for structural concerns, do NOT go outside.

People are generally safer inside, taking cover under sturdy objects like desks.  There are a few exceptions--places like grocery stores, for example, where the shelving is not secured.  Even then, getting to a perimeter wall is better than running outside.

Most of the unreinforced masonry that came down were chimneys and facades.  People inside these structures were fine.  It's when they ran outside that they almost were struck by falling debris.  We are very relieved that no one was seriously injured.

tazzygirl -> RE: Earthquake near DC (8/23/2011 9:24:14 PM)

Again, the east coast is fixated on Irene at the moment.  I doubt anyone who heard of the earthquake in the middle of Virginia gave a second thought to a tsunami.    Maybe a river problem.... but hardly an oceanic one for the area.

Oh I don't doubt at all that the media contributed to frenzy.  That happens here in California, too, when there are quakes.  They make their money by sensationalizing.  Perhaps the ticker about a tsunami was just to add more drama to the situation.  I actually wouldn't doubt that.

And it's absolutely better to stay inside if your building is not falling down - under sturdy objects, along the perimeter, or inside a door frame. I'm glad there were no serious injuries, too.

Well, I can assure you that I had to work late tonight to get our shelters ready to open for the potential storm....and I just re-packed my deployment bags in case they deploy my medical team. Really hoping this one turns east.  I just have too much other stuff to do right now....
