tazzygirl -> Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 11:55:18 AM)

The man ran across this... and passed it on to me.

Now, Im passing it on for debate.

The quote...

There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there — good for you!

But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea — God bless. Keep a big hunk of it.

But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.

Let the snark, eye rolling, name calling and derailing begin!

Yeah I was just reading that in the Krugman oped in the Times.....ooops,now I have gone and done it....everything will now be assailed as one more piece of evidence of the left wing medias bias.
Let the deflection begin.

Marc2b -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:02:21 PM)

The only problem I have with that quote is that it makes it sound as if the guy who paid for the factory (I doubt he actually built it) didn't pay any taxes before hand that created the roads, schools etc. It seperates him out and hold him up for scorn based upon a fallacy that he is a parasite. In short, it's bigotry.

LanceHughes -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:12:21 PM)

He paid, is paying, and will pay proportional use just like everyone else, and just like every other business.  Quote makes him sound like he's using entire road.  Similarly for fire and police protection.  No fire means he's paying for other people's fires, thefts, etc.

How about the church property - property ONLY ! - for which the church pays ZERO, and yet gets full benefits should they need it.  Estimates in Denver are that 20-25% of the LAND doesn't pay property tax since owned by Roman Catholic Church.  RCs set up their own laundry in a building not near any other RC church, for the purpose of doing their own Diocese wide laundry.  They own building and land, so, guess what?  They pay no property tax there.  Then, they started taking in commercial accounts since their prices were cheaper.  Cheaper why?  Well, of course - they pay no property taxes.  Labor?  Not sure if they were using un-paid Nuns, etc.

slvemike4u -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:13:14 PM)

Wow,in a quote discussing the social compact of a society you read all of that into it.I missed that completely [8|]

Yes you did. Most people don't recognize biogtry when it agrees with their own.

slvemike4u -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:23:43 PM)

Do you include yourself in the "most people" category....or are you special?

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:23:53 PM)

And the problem that I see is that the "guy" is not usually really a guy, it is a corporation started for the purpose of building and operating a factory.  The corporation often HAS NOT paid taxes previously for roads, fire, safety, etc.

Yes I include myself... I never exempt myself from being human.

Not all businesses are corporations but for the sake of argument...

Even a corporation is comprised of people who have been paying taxes.

This for me has nothing to do with whether or not businesses should pay taxes or how much. It is about portraying someone as a parasite when they are not. Dehuminization of the Other is the first step down a dark path.

StrangerThan -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:46:29 PM)

That sounds like, you build a factory, you no longer are responsible for any taxes, not federal, not state, no property taxes - nada.

It sounds like you don't pay sales tax on fuel to move your goods to market since many states use that money for road improvement.

Hell, it sounds like everyone should grab some two-by-fours, knock together a shack in the backyard, call it factory and never again be liable for any sort of tax burden.

Iamsemisweet -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 12:48:05 PM)

A corporation consists of shareholders, who may or may not have paid for the local services at least, and may not even be in this country.
I see where this is going, but a corporation, like, say GE, that does not pay taxes IS a parasite.

From a reader response about this topic on bootleg.com:

“You built a factory out there? Good for you,” “Built a factory” is a summary for a lot of work. Put up equity, designed a business, took risk to buy land, get permits, pay property taxes and use taxes and permit fees. Then, bought a bunch of equipment and had it installed …and paid sales taxes. Hired some employees and paid them a bunch of money and paid payroll taxes on top of that. Bought a bunch of raw materials from companies that paid a bunch of salaries and a bunch of taxes. Building a factory is a huge private investment that pays the public a lot of taxes for the right to be built.

“But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for.” Between fuel taxes, license fees, tolls and various taxes on transportation related activities, the roads budget is smaller than the total tax take.

you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; No, you did not educate them. You babysat them for 12 years. Then I hired them, taught them how to be responsible and show up for work, taught them how to communicate in clear sentences, taught them that there are rights and wrongs and (unlike with your schools) wrongs have consequences in the workplace. Then paid for extended education for my employees so they could continue to improve themselves and better add value to what we do around here.

“You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for.” Funny, my factory has 24/7 security guards because the last time it was broken into, the police did not even bother to take a report, they just said “call your insurance company”. As for fire? The closest fire department is 10 miles away. My insurance company requires that I have a full wet sprinkler system to qualify for insurance because there is no local fire protection.

“You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.” Well, that is not exactly true. When the AFL-CIO tried to unionize my workforce, they staged three days of noisy protests outside my factory. The police forces just stood around and watched as the protesters intimidated my workers, vandalized their cars and destroyed my property.

You say “we” like the government and society are the same. They aren’t. My company and my community and you politicians are not “we”.

True, but only to a limited extent. Most corporations are smaller, local concerns and not the large, international monsters people tend to think when they hear the word.

Most corporations are not big enough to buy their own Presidents and skip out of paying taxes. While I agree that they should pay like everyone else I'm still not comfortable calling them parasites for the above mentioned reason and because GE does employ a lot of people (who pay taxes).

No more <haha> bigotry than the industrialists pushing an agenda that sounds more like they SHOULDN'T have to pay taxes.

And frankly, it's real context, more a response to the brahman diatribe that we've been hearing the infomercial for, for FAR TOO LONG without strong rebuttal.
   When someone responds to the BS story ending in "it's either the corporation's way of the highway", it's bigotry? Is that how we're gonna play it.
  You're entitled to your opinion though.

I think it needs a little hamburger helper from well meaning (I think) folks like yourself to make it meet a bigotry test.
I totally disagree, we have to listen to the opposite message every time we turn on a news broadcast or pick up a major news paper.

She's not saying he's a parasite unless he is trying to avoid paying his share.

One could just as easily say sure bud, it costs a lot to be rich. Now could you stop holding people hostage and demanding your free lunch now that you've got yours?
    It's time to stop begging in the streets for wealth insurance.

Probably not. Biogtry is the default setting of the human race. It just tends to irk me a little more when it comes out of the wing of politics that like to imagine itself as unbigoted.

A rebuttal should be based upon facts and reason, not on emotion, particularly emotions that encourage us to hate certain people for who and what they are based upon a false image of them.

Yes.

Like I said, my problem with the quote is that it makes the hypothetical factory owner look like a parasite when in fact he is not. That immediately colors people’s perceptions of the argument. No longer is it “what is a fair tax rate for corporations?” but instead it devolves into “how can we stick it to those bastards!” This can never be the basis for sound social policy.

quote:

I totally disagree, we have to listen to the opposite message every time we turn on a news broadcast or pick up a major news paper.

I said nothing that should indicate that I wish to censor Elizabeth Warren or anyone else.

Marc2b -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 1:30:06 PM)

quote:

False. The quote says (emphasis mine):

"But I want to be clear. Keep a big hunk of it."

The clear implication is that the factory owner did not contribute to the roads, schools, etc., but was only sucking off of "the rest of us."

mnottertail -> RE: Elizabeth Warren quote (9/23/2011 1:33:34 PM)

Which by and large he is.

The wear and tear on those roads that he heaps on compared to all other individuals is not equitably proportionally taxed....and so on.....
