Actually, I think "over his head" is a baseball reference, where a slow player would stand oblivious to a pitch, a throw or a hit, that went "over his head."

I suspect that flies over his head is a mixed metaphor- mixing perhaps the phrase "In over his head" referring to trying to swim in the deep end of the pool or stream, and "flew right past him", i.e. someone who was oblivious to a nearby object moving quickly.

However, I don't see that "flies over his head" is a reference to speed of an object, its more likely a reference to lack of awareness of a situation.

Sam

"Flies over his head" may be a butchering of two metaphors into one, but its not a mixed metaphor per se, since it is intended as a single metaphor.

The reference to slow isnt a metaphor it is a direct reference to thinking ability, so no mixed metaphors here.

Also the "flies over his head" (a butchering of "in over his head" possibly) could arguably be about the speed of flight, not height.

Methinks thou doth over-reach too much.

I didnt read Tweaks post to say there were NO Muslim conflicts, but that the number of them that involve outside countries (religions) were far outnumbered by conflicts involving strictly allegdly Christian countries...

I may be wrong./..

You're correct. That is the sense which I intended it to mean. Though I'd prefer to use the term 'Western' to 'Christian' if only to keep theology out of the discussion. My point was political not religious.

"International conflict" is pretty self-explanatory samboct, don't you think? Both the Iran/Iraq war and the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait clearly qualify.

@ Kirata: I chose the end of WWII simply as a convenient cut off date. I wanted the discussion to relate to those conflicts relevant to world we live in today. If you can nominate a better one I'd be perfectly happy to go along with it.

The point of the exercise was to demonstrate that Western nations are involved in many many more international conflicts than Muslim ones. This is one indicator of aggression. It is far from definitive. There are others.

That said, this indicator contradicts the common view/assumption that the West is peace-loving and peaceful, and that the Muslim countries are warlike and aggressive.

samboct -> RE: Damn Muslims holding a peace conference. (9/28/2011 8:28:32 PM)

Well, it seems to me that Muslims have been involved in quite a few conflicts. Here's the list of countries where Muslims have been linked to conflict from Wiki. Clearly, some of these conflicts don't meet the standard of "war", but the idea that Muslims are not involved in conflicts or perhaps fewer conflicts than other religions appears to be an error. Nevertheless, most of the conflicts are driven by a relatively small percentage of individuals who identify themselves as Muslim. Approx. one fifth of the global population is Muslim.

Some of the events pivotal in the Muslim world's relationship with the outside world in the post-Soviet era were:
The Karabakh War
The Iran–Iraq War
The 1991 Gulf War
The Bosnian War
The Kosovo War
The South Lebanon conflict (1982–2000)
The Kargil War
The 2001 invasion of Afghanistan
The 2003 invasion of Iraq
The so-called War on Terror
The Syrian occupation of Lebanon
The Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy of 2005
The Second Sudanese Civil War
The 2006 Lebanon War
The 2006 controversy over remarks quoted by Pope Benedict XVI
The 2007 Lebanon conflict
The ongoing war in Darfur
The ongoing standoff with Iran over its nuclear program
The ongoing Second Chechen War
The ongoing War in North-West Pakistan
The ongoing Insurgency in the Philippines
The ongoing war in Somalia
The 2008 Kosovo declaration of independence
The 2010–2011 Middle East and North Africa protests

I like the portable mosques myself.

The northernmost mosque in North America has opened in Inuvik, in Canada's Northwest Territories, where there is a growing Muslim population.

The Christian sect of the desert god has burned the First Nations in northern Canada pretty well out, perhaps the more modern version of their Abrahamic religion could do better, maybe even help with the drinking. Not many Muslims get busted for drunk driving.

Polite, what puzzled me is the mentality that puts "damn" before "peace lovers". What's objectionable about loving peace? Why is a virtue cursed? How bizarre is that?

(I know I should really put those questions to AZM, not you! But I have no confidence rational or coherent responses would be forthcoming.)

samboct -> RE: Damn Muslims holding a peace conference. (9/29/2011 5:33:40 AM)

Geez Tweak....

I'll tell you how I interpreted the thread title...

It's a sarcastic comment- how dare the Muslims hold a peace conference, they're supposed to be blowing things up. Don't they know their role in the world?

Seems to me that the conference organizers are tackling head on the perception that some of us, myself included, that Muslims have been involved in lots of conflicts in the past decades. Your posts seem to be denying that they've been in conflicts- so then what would the point of a peace conference be?

I think a peace conference is a good idea- it's facing the problem squarely and is a vital first step in solving the issue. You can't solve a problem if you can't admit one exists....which is why I must admit I've been rather puzzled over the purpose of your posts over the past several days.

Face it, we don't have many Christian, or Jewish martyrs these days blowing things up. My hunch is that I could put Buddhist and Hindu folks in that category as well, but I recall some nastiness in India and I haven't looked up who was claiming "credit". But Muslims? A different story.

I'm not certain why this is. Perhaps its related to the high rate of illiteracy and the fact that the only schools are religious and offer a very slanted look at the world. It's a comforting theory...but IIRC, most of the terrorists involved in 9/11 were actually well educated. So what is it about the religion that encourages a small percentage to commit atrocities? Is it even related to the religion or is it merely coincidental, i.e. the people in those countries enjoy committing atrocities and they happen to be Muslim?

To me, these are interesting questions, but you'll never get to ask them if you can't acknowledge the link between Muslims and terrorism.

I am not condemning anyone, and the churches here are very quiet. Very respectful, not at all pushy or militant as you seem to believe.

And Obama has declared that we are an Islamic country, besides.

Hey, you in a Christian country ruled more by the church than us with your militant baptists and such, how can you condemn any other culture that also has law based upon religious bollocks ?

First of all we had Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority.

Then we have Pat Robertson and his 700 club.

And we both know I can come up with many more examples so stop spreading your lies.

And when exactly did Obama declare this an Islamic country?

Do you have a citation?

Sanity -> RE: Damn Muslims holding a peace conference. (9/29/2011 6:09:37 AM)

Who ever forced you to watch Falwell or Robertson...  [:D]

As to your second Monty Python quest for knowledge, I give you Sir Obama pontificating from his royal throne:

"Uh... we need to educate ourselves on Islam... if you took the actual numbers of Muslims Americans we uh would be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world."
