The wikipedia entry is (to my slight surprise) a pretty good read;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sadomasochism

I've always thought that sadism in the context of RACK/SSC was a little bit "moderated", because I assumed, wrongly I think, that genuine sadism wouldn't be satisfied if the recipient enjoyed the experience. But my view has changed over time, I don't think sadism necessarily requires the recipient to dislike the experience.

Of course there are physcho-sadists for whom consent on the part of the other party would be something of a disappointment - but I manage to pop them outside RACK/SSC and place them into the "mentally ill" category.

I will admit that, when I'm in sadist mode, I don't want my playmate to enjoy the physical sensation, but I do want them to enjoy having had it afterwards (if that makes any sense).

Let me ask you this, crazyml...let's say your partner is on a spanking bench (or the accoutrement of your choosing) and you're giving your partner a good beating and screams emanate from that person with each whack...and if you grabbed that person by the hair, pulling their head back so you could look into their eyes...and you can tell they are flyin' high...would you be disappointed?

Really good question, and one that I struggle to answer in a satisfactory way...

No, as a rule I wouldn't be disappointed at all - it would be a huge rush. But I still kind of struggle to define myself as a sadist because I'd enjoy the fact that my playmate was flyin high.

But there have been a couple of rare times, perhaps because of the depth of the relationship and my understanding (flawed or otherwise) of my partner's needs where I've been able to deliver a caning that had my playmate desperate for it to stop at the time, and very very happy having had the caning afterwards. I'm glad to say, that I've never been in the situation where I've delivered a hard caning that left my playmate regretting the experience, I'd be mortified if I did. Which (going back to my ongoing difficulty with the term "sadist") suggests to me that I am, at best, a "service-sadist" - Which isn't an attempt to define a new category, simply to illustrate the difficulty I have with the term.

Would you say that the begging-you-to-stop part of it is what constitutes most of the enjoyment you get out of it? How do you know just how far past that point to take it?

On a couple of occasions, yes. But generally, no.

As for how I know how far past that point to take it - It's a judgement call I think - And when you make it you have to be prepared to accept the consequences if you get it wrong.

I was expecting a yes. ;) What part does give you the most enjoyment then? Or can you define it in that manner? I almost get the impression this previous partner has cemented a particular set of reactions that "do it" for you. Would you agree there is merit to that idea? Or am I way out in the parking lot on this one? ;)

For me... it's the submission. So, moving away from physical sadism to humiliation (which I'd argue is a form of sadism) the moment of "rush" is when she submits... when she accepts - despite herself.

In the context of physical sadism, part of it is definitely the limit-testing, but also it's that submission.. acceptance.

Grin... no I don't think you're way out in the parking lot by any means!

Do you prefer some resistance to her submission? Is it less exciting if she is a willing participant? Even if she's not entirely on board with getting a beating?

If her submission doesn't require a little struggle, it's definitely less exciting. definitely.

Sooooo...what sort of struggle? A hesitation? You dragging her by the hair and her resisting all the way? Somewhere in between?

For me it's that moment of conflict, she knows she doesn't have to submit, she knows it's going to be unpleasant, but she submits...

That moment.

It sounds like it's more of a hesitation thing...like you can tell she's balking at the idea...but doing it because she's doing it for you. Does that sound about right?

Hmmm...how about this...balking at the idea...there is that hesitation of "no...no I don't think I want to do this"....then possibly looking at you, you see that switch from "no" to "I really want to please him"...and while there is still that uncertainty in her face, you know she's going to do it. Is that a bit closer?

Do you prefer the person you play with to enjoy the pain or hate the pain? And please elaborate, if you are willing.

Thanks! :)

Laughs.
All I expect of her is to TAKE the pain.
She's a slave. Her function is to serve, please and obey. If I want to hurt her I will. Depending on my mood, whether she gets anything out of it or not is irrelevant.

Let me rephrase. Would you prefer your slave to relish the pain you inflict? Or would you rather that she hate it? Or somewhere in-between? Or...as your post suggests, it doesn't matter, it's just the inflicting that addresses your sadistic needs?
