Halloween and its origins has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the concept of ha-Satan and the themes/motifs surrounding the character. Damn fundamentalists and their deluded nonsense.

Oh well, a mini-bible is so much better than those horrible Peanut-Butter-Kisses in the black and/or orange wrappers that we used to get. Unfortunately I think that they still sell them.

Of course all Charlie Brown ever got was a bag of rocks.

For goodness sake, essentially little children are going door-to-door and begging and you folks are claiming religion being shoved down their throats if a mini-bible is dropped in their pumpkin. [8|]

If it bothers you that much, don't let your children go trick-or-treating. Mini-bibles are right up there with the toothbrushes the dentist hands out. *sigh*

QFT

They get a book. Does this guy then force them to sit down and read it? Or does he allow them to exercise their free will to say 'no', or to throw it away?

Over here in the UK the 'trick or treat' culture is taking off. I refuse to hand out candies to kids. I work with a lot of kids with obesity and dental health problems stemming mostly from poor diet and hygiene - I made the choice not to add to the problem. So I started giving out little boxes of raisins, or a choice of fresh fruit.

No kids come to my house on halloween - they've chosen not to do so because they don't get what they want. I'm guessing the kids who get the bibles won't go back there again either. No harm, no foul.

I am just asking a honest question. But please answer. Thank you.

Yes.

It is not like we do not have a copy of THAT in the house as well. We have the Satanic Bible as well. And The Prince. And over 5000 more.

Freedom of religion is also freedom from religion. I wouldnt be any happier if it was the Koran.

Someone decided to make a religious statement during a nonreligious holiday... I am supposed to embrace that.

We had one bible in the home.... my grandmother's family bible... with all the names and births from generations before her written down. If someone had given my son a bible while he was out trick or treating, it would have been given back with a smile and a "no thank you".

Couple years ago in a little town called Brookside/Mendam here in Jersey, there was a church who sponsored a "house of horrors" type of Halloween event,inviting kids and parents to fun and a party and candy(for the kids).

Well,it turns out the was never any intention of having fun.Instead of gools and goblins,they had video and images of actual abortions complete with pics of fetuses.

By the time the kids had gotten throught sheet "maze" that was set up,they had seen enough to produce screams and tears and a lot of nighmares.

The reaction from the kids was absolute horror(the real kind)and outraged parents who felt they had been mugged and duped.Even my con friends thought it was wrong.

The church was un-apologetic and said they stood by their "house of horrors" idea.There were a number of families including my friend`s who left that church to join another.

It took quite a while for people to forget what that "church" did and it was the 1st and last time a stunt like that was pulled there.

Talk about scarey for Halloween. I agree with you Owner. That is some fucked up shit.

Nifty. That is a valid choice. I just see no reason to get upset over it.

Our house is giving out Kit-Kats, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, or Starbursts (for those that cannot have chocolate). Stop by. [:)]

Fr

I think Aylee pretty much tagged my thoughts when I posted this when she made the comment about the dentist handing out toothbrushs. We had one of those when I was a child too and not many kids went to his house more than once. There was no bible bashing or christian hate intended in my post. It was more of a shock at the idea that while we are pretty much sending our kids out to panhandle/beg for candy that someone feels they need to stand up and teach them something moral. IMO There is nothing wrong with believing what someone wants to beleive as far as "god" goes but there is (in my mind) something wrong with robbing children of fun. I spend a large amount of time with kids and I personally believe it is wrong to not allow them to be kids. I mean I too could drop the satainic bible in a someones bag. Or wicca for the solitary practitioner. Or the talmud. Or I could really confuse them and drop hot dogs in their bags...with lots of ketchup packs but no buns. I just don't see the point in doing it. I hand out candy, and noise makers, and glow sticks, and toys to the kids that show up at my place. I like seeing the happy looks on their faces and hearing them laugh.

littlewonder -> RE: Trick-or-bible (10/29/2011 9:04:10 AM)

When I was young we had churches that participated in Halloween. The nuns would give us a pamphlet inviting us to church and either a popcorn ball, an apple or a small bag of pretzels and then you could go down to the basement afterwards and have a free dinner while listening to music. It was actually fun and I took my daughter to a few and she enjoyed them as well. I never felt forced and it was still fun even though it was Halloween at a church. All the kids there sure seemed to enjoy themselves as well.

I'm not sure that's a fair comparison: Lavey was a hilariously conceited twat, there's no question, but his contempt for most of the rest of the human race wasn't racially motivated. Machiavelli definitely doesn't belong in there with Hitler either.

(Now Andrew MacDonald and a couple of the libertarian SF wing do manage to approach the same level of ideological nastiness as Hitler, on the other hand...)

How is this news?

I mean really, how is this news? Whenever I see these sorts of stories my biggest question is: hasn't anyone explained to journalists not to feed the trolls.

You found darling Anton funny as well? Nice.

I was not trying to lump the books ideologically. My point was that they are books. Not good or bad in and of themselves. We will leave aside competence in writing.

I do not really think that Psalms, Proverbs, and the New Testament should be lumped with Hitler. But I assumed that the point was shock value.

Well, my oldest is 4. She does read a bit, but if there is no pictures of animals then she is not all that interested.

But yes, I count it a win no matter what book she is reading if it means that she is not unshelving the rest.

Besides, Mein Kampf is much less upsetting to a youngster than reading about war atrocities through the ages. Those books of course, DO come with pictures. Some of them at least.

SpanishMatMaster -> RE: Trick-or-bible (10/29/2011 12:38:09 PM)

Dear Aylee: I asked a question, you answered. I am not inclined to handle this further. I consider that you are missing many important points and are horribly wrong, but I do not feel the need to explain it further. You would not be "upset" if somebody gave your child "Mein Kampf" to read, no matter his/her age. Your child, your rules. I have nothing more to say.

No biggie as far as I'm concerned. It makes him feel good, so leave him to it.

This is how I feel too, I don't get the reason to get up in arms about this at all. If you don't want your kid to have it remove it with the rest of the stuff you don't want them to have. I mean, you do check the kids candy right? You don't let them keep anything that looks opened or otherwise unfriendly, just take the little bible then too. He isn't sitting their preaching to the kids he simply gives them something other than candy. A bible isn't inherently dangerous so no harm done.

tazzygirl -> RE: Trick-or-bible (10/29/2011 1:10:53 PM)

Check? when my son was young, we would take his candy to the hospital and have it x-rayed. The bible would never have left the man's porch... and he would have been off the list for next year.

Epytropos -> RE: Trick-or-bible (10/29/2011 1:16:08 PM)

Meh. Makes no difference to me. It's a free country (arguably) so if he wants to give kids bibles more power to him. Is it a little rude? Absolutely. But it's hardly abhorrent. If getting a bible on Halloween is enough to override your kids ability to think critically about religion that kid was well and truly fucked from the get-go. Seems strange to me that those claiming they let their kids make their own decisions about religion are getting upset about a holy book being given to the child. If they are truly expected to make their own decision, a bible would be a pretty decent tool to have in making it, don't you think? I had a neighbor who gave out bible tracts and candy every Halloween, and have also read the bible cover to cover, and somehow I managed to come out agnostic atheist. Any kid with a brain will make their own decision, and any kid without one never had a chance in the first place.

Okay... my parents never went that far... but see, you have choices just like he does, he has every right to hand out bibles, or pennies or toothbrushes or whatever he wants as long as it isn't something harmful, and you have every right to refuse just like you would if he handed out kit kats and you didn't like them.

If they were making their own decisions, as my son did, he would have asked for one, just as he asked to go to church with my mother, just as he asked to go see the Passion of Christ.... what you are missing is that these were his choices.
