Jerry Rubin's statement about taking casualties was not about inflicting them. Want to know what turned the tide in the civil rights movement? They saw peaceful protestors being attacked by dogs, firehoses and they saw a bunch of white trash not only being allowed to beat up peaceful protestors but in fact were deputized to do so. Bull Connor on the tv set in mainstream america turned people's attitudes from wondering what all the noise was about, to actively supporting the goals. When even suburban, republican america saw a problem (who might otherwise be more sympathetic towards the agressors then the blacks), it turned the tide. If the demonstrators themselves turn violent, they have lost, their power quite frankly is in being victims of violence, not perpetuators. As far as the demographics of protestors, take a look sometime at the anti war movement and the leaders thereof, many of them were from well off backgrounds, they often from top schools (ivies and others), came from well off backgrounds, and yet were out there protesting (and I won't leave out that after done with this, many of them, like Jerry Rubin, turned into the same upper class sellouts they had protested against, go figure). People call this class warfare, but want to know a dirty little secret, other then the top .1%, who last I checked have seen income rise 400% in the past 30 years, many of those in the upper 2% are sympathetic, because they understand why they are angry and sympathize because many of themselves have been hurt by the same trends. Other then the geniuses who masterminded the financial meltdown, a lot of people lost their jobs of many years at places like Lehman Brothers and Bear Steans because of what the greedy bastards did, and if people think their view is anti business, be my guess, because the reality is what these clowns did and are doing threatens the system others are claiming to protect. Want proof? Take a look at MF Global, 600 million dollars plus of investors money is missing in action, Corzine and his gang of thugs were using client accounts to try and make up for the ridiculous risk they took gambling on euro zone bonds.
