By deciding on your own to breastfeed while the Judge is in session you are disrespecting the Judge, the Court system, the Law, and all that it represents.
How exactly is that? In just what way does it disrespect any of those things? Plenty of people have said so, yet none have explained just how it does.

The only thing this thread has convinced me off is this:

Next baby I have, I'm going to go out of my way to breastfeed in public places.

Me too!

... Wait, I do not have breasts... I ain't even female.

Aw, heck! Me too!

Well, what the action/decision conveys is basically "ok, screw whatever you guys are doing over there, it's not important enough for me to even pretend to be interested in... I'm going to sit in this corner and do something that's only convenient to me, even though it might cause a disturbance" (by which I am referring to the baby possibly acting up, not people being offended to see her breastfeed). If she were say watching a ballgame, fair enough. But in a Courtroom in session, the proceedings hold the utmost priority and the Judge is the highest authority. That she didn't bother to ask and just decided on her own to start feeding in the room shows blatant disregard for the Judge's presence, much less authority. It's disrespectful in the same way a child who stands up in the middle of class and leaves without so much as a word to the teacher speaking.

If she had asked but was forbidden from leaving the room or feeding her child but did anyway, that's a different matter in regards to respect (the Judge should allow her to be excused, and then her continuing despite being told she cannot take any action to tend to her child would be admirable in the sense that she put her child's needs above her own need to stay out of trouble).

eta for typos

GreedyTop -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 4:50:52 AM)

seems to me that by feeding the child, she was KEEPING the kid from getting fussy, and causing a REAL disturbance.

More disrespectful to keep the kid quiet by feeding it, or more disrespectful to ignore the kids needs and have it get fussier and louder?

*shrug*

Okay - I've only read the last three posts on here but already I can tell that there are some people on here who have never had to deal with a tiny hungry baby (Alecta - that would be you). I don't give a damn about where you are or what you are doing - if you have a baby with you - the child's needs come first. ALWAYS!!!! I would bet my life savings that had Mom not gone ahead and fed the babe, the judge would have been most displeased with the disruption to his courtroom, and would have sternly instructed the mom to look after her child.

Ninebelowzero -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 4:59:44 AM)

Why didn't the judge stop proceedings to helpthe mother?
Just saing like.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 6:05:38 AM)

Actually some of us HAVE had to deal with hungry babies and HAVE breast fed both, (and in public even) but still don't agree with breastfeeding in court. Did you read her suggestions? They were reasonable suggestions.

Is anyone here still in college? I can tell you what my professors would have said had I dared even bring a child/baby into their classroom, let alone breastfed in the middle of a lecture. Is a courtroom not entitled to at least as much respect as a classroom?

I have been at university faculty meetings when one of the professors was breast feeding. Noone thought twice about it.

That is a gathering of equals. I am asking specifically about a classroom. Now...maybe...somewhere...there's a professor that wouldn't mind that-there is an exception for every rule. But when I was attending college (being taught mainly by attorneys btw) that would not have been tolerated. Even bringing a child into the classroom was verboten.

The difference is that while there might be a penalty in terms of passing/failing the course, the mother can stay home with a sick child. Try that with a court appearance and chances are she would be held in contempt of court.

The courts here allow you to call and re-schedule with no penalty. (unless you do it over and over again)

tazzygirl -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 6:50:50 AM)

I took my newborn son to class... other women did as well. Not that hard to pump before going. While she has the right, the question becomes... "Yes, she can, but should she".

xxblushesxx -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 6:53:33 AM)

Wow. I felt I was lucky to have a school that offered daycare. And there was NO WAY we were allowed to bring children to class. Ever.

On the day of the case or with notice ahead of time?

I've done it on the very day with cases similar to hers. (seatbelt violation, etc.) They have those cases on certain days every week, so it's not a big deal as long as you keep the court informed.

TheFireWithinMe -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 7:02:37 AM)

Then I wonder if the woman in the OP knew that was an option. Oh well too late now.

One of my professors gave my son a Belkie Bear as a gift. Another gave him a child's bank and stuck 10 dollars in it. Granted these were not the type of classes you took. Upper level business classes. But my professors were very accommodating. Not to mention I had him by c-section. Being able to return to classes in 2 weeks with a new born in tow... lol... thomas had his own spot for the carriage in the back of the classes.

That's pretty damned cool.

It is cool. But I'm a baby freak and would have spent the entire period sneaking peeks (as I could) at the little one. I wouldn't have known a tort from a tart by the time we were done. *lol*

GreedyTop -> RE: Breastfeeding In Court? (11/19/2011 7:11:25 AM)

aww, c'mon.. you woulda known me as the tart that I am!! *grin*
