And what does sacking out on a person in bed and refusing to move mean?

Congratulations and a great move. Take note of how Bones stood and put his head on your lap. Dogs do this to people they trust. Thank you for sharing. I find much of what you post touching or endearing in some way and admire your decision to foster Bones.

Oh that? Oh he's just topping from the bottom.

I found He's actually really good about letting me know when he wants to potty, he will come up to me, and stand there, and not that he doesn't do that anyway, but if he was previously comfy and or asleep , I assume he wants to potty and I take him out. Every time I have done so, he's had to pee, so I'm letting him tell me, not me tell him.

He was not, in fact. He was left with to many ear infections that had not been treated and caused a lot of damage to his ear canals, so the vet at Homeward bound had to do bi lateral ear surgery to take out his ear canals, these surgeries unfortunately leave the poor babies deaf but are necessary due to all the damage from un treated ear infections. He was someone's dog and a neighbor noticed he was not being cared for and was being neglected and she got the neighbor to sign the dog over, no problem, but then she got in a motor cycle accident and broke her arm and couldn't work with or handle Bones, so she turned him over to the HBGR group.

I found that out really quickly, this morning he found a plastic drink cup from Mc D's grabbed it and walked to the bed hopped onto it, to settle in and see what he could find in the cup. I don't let him have it though, if I see him with something I take it promptly. Though I feel so bad cause this morning I sat down and bopped him in the chin with my knee as I was taking it from him, so I am sure he thinks I bopped him to correct him. He'll get over it:D

he picked up a non trash box package I had sitting at eye level and quickly dropped it once he figured out it wasn't food or something he could tear up, and I praised him.

Actually I did read this morning, that they recommend crate training, and crating, if you need a bit of a break from supervising your dog, for what e ver reason, or you're going to leave him alone and if you don't have a crate call the volunteer director and she'll get one you may borrow. I am still going to give him a chance to settle down and not be a nut over night, before I crate him for bedtime.

I too want to walk dogs in harnesses not collars, it's far better if they're a bit pulley, while learning not to be, than a collar, because even though a lot of people say these no slip collars will not choke or bother the dog, the truth is, heavy pullers who are like FREEEEEEEEEDOM TAKE ME FOR A WALK, pull pull pull! WILL start to pant and gasp a bit from it pressing on their throats, I've always thought that was kind of cruel, honestly, how would we like being desperate to get out and stretch and someone had put something on our necks that pushed on us and made us wheeze. Someone wrote on his file that he needs a gentle leader, and from what I understand they feel the correction and direction on their faces, and it's much, much more effective in directing them..

Was he born deaf? How did he come to be in the shelter, the circumstances of his no longer having an owner? Goldens are smart and dumb, lol. HUGE garbage hounds, so yea, watch the food and the garbage, he will go in there.

The vibrating collar sounds like a "must," but even though my examples may have been a bit odd, until you can save for one, rigging something up may be a good way to go.

I found this site:

Vibrating Dog Collars for DEAF Dogs

And the cheapest collar they listed was about $200.00, however, they did supply directions for making your own. Actually that entire site is devoted to deaf animals, I'm sure it will be helpful.

Ask the shelter where you work if you can borrow a crate for a bit while you train him. Since you know he is already thinking of taking food, a crate is going to be a "must" for when no one can be in the house with him. Also look on Ebay and Craiglist to see if you can find one that is inexpensive. You might even find someone giving a crate away on Craigslist. If you were in my area, I could have gotten you a crate to use in a heartbeat.

Consider using a harness to walk him instead of a collar. Since he is deaf, and you want to get a vibrating collar, a harness could make it easier for him to learn to walk on a leash properly while allowing the (vibrating) collar, once you get one to be specific to other things.

Remember, even if Bones "fights" you over training a bit, he really will be happier with structure than without.

The getting up in the middle of the night *could* be him adjusting, but it also *could* be part of you being a new "mommy." He is loving all the attention and going out every twenty minutes, so when you go to bed, you aren't doing either and he is telling you he want to, so give that some thought every time that nervous mommy thing rears its ugly head.

quote:

e "nervous" and let him out every twenty minutes, he will come to expect it. Not a good thing or productive thing with an animal.

Ironically one of the tips about if a golden is not for you on the website said they're not for you if you don't want your stuff re arranged, because they WILL pick up stuff and put it smewhere else, it's their nature to fetch and bring. and may do so even if not asked lol.

He had a nice romp this morning off leash in our yard supervised by me of course, a little later I will take him out and work on the sit idea. We had a really good sit sucess this morning, he wants to be a velcro dog sometimes, if you go out he wants out. And I was leaving my room to go to the fridge to get a yogurt, not something you need a shadow for, so I got him to look at me, gave the sit signal and he wasn't understanding it so I gently pushed on his rump, I was told I could do that, got him in a sit, waited a few moments, indicated with my hand I wanted him to stay, opened the door and then quickly left an closed it behind me. He was not in a sit when I got back a few seconds later but that's ok I didn't expect him to be, nor did I ask him to be lol.

Grrrr he's so rowdy at night, like 3-4 am 4-5 timea night. If he don't settle down in a few days, cause I'm patient I understand the joy of a room and a bed is new after so long in a kennel, and stop waking me and daddy up 4-5 times an hour, I'm going to have to crate him.

Assuming he gets plenty of exercise during the day, I think he should be fine in a few days.

I think so too, it's got to be very heady to go from a small ish cage, with no bed but a blankie on the floor or a little pallet, to a big huge cushion all your own, and plenty of room to move.

My mother's Australian Sheep dog mix and my Husky could hold it for 12 hours if necessary (they don't like to go out in the rain) so 20-30 minutes is way more frequent than necessary. Sounds like he tells you when he needs to go, which is wonderful!

Mom's dog has behavioral issues if she doesn't get enough exercise including slipping the leash and taking herself for a walk.

Absolutely! But I thought it was a puppy needing house-training.

we're picking up a crate for him Tomorow. The foster family co ordinator said if he won't settle down at night after a chance to do so, it is absolutely ok to crate him at night while you sleep.

I wanna get him some kongs and approved stuff to put in them, so he can play with those too, and maybe he'll leave some of the things of mine alone. Cause he likes picking upmy stuff, trash or not.

Did you let him out before bed? If not it might be the reason he woke you.

It's been 11 months since I had a dog in the house, he doesn't try to wake me up, not like he comes and claws at m e or barks at me, but he does walk up to the edge of the bed and I am awoken by his tags clanking. Or if he's wrestless and moving about the room snuffing about.. and I hear it and wake up. I don't mind. I'll probably be less sensitive to his rustling about in time.

Never heard of crating, but a large dog needs a minimum of an hours walk a day, not just let out in a back yard.

Did this foster organisation not even check your suitability???

OK i'm nasty, but you cant even look after yourself, Who would give you an animal to care for!!

That is nasty. She seems to have this well under control.

TFTB, I know you won't, but try not to have him in the crate too often. Our male dog is "crate crazy" from his previous owners. They left him crated almost all hours of the day. He's kind of insane.

nasty and uncalled for. You have no clue how hard she's been working with that dog -and doing a great job I might add.

Crating is fine for the night. Just dont put him in before you are ready to go yourself. One last trip outside, then crate as you go to your bed. Get him used to the idea that once you are in bed, he should be too.

He is already used to peeing every time he goes out. It doesn't mean he *needs* to go. When he is walking around and wakes you up, give him the sign to lay down and a chance to settle.

Actually, a large dog needs a minimum of 1 hour of EXERCISE a day. Since you have never heard of crating, you really aren't in a position to discuss someone else's ability to train or care for a dog, are you?

I don't think she wants to crate him at night, just when no one is home. It seems he is pretty well housebroken already, so not crating him at night shouldn't be a huge issue.
