For butch.. and anyone else who isnt sure hot to tip...

By Country

A nice chart you men, or women, can tuck into your wallets

And CNN always does this every year.

I was shocked that you're supposed to tip the hairdresser. I didn't know that, and have never done so...

I still find it hard to judge what to tip for and how much, Belgium doesn't tip at all. For anything.
Tipping a hairdresser would be considered rude. Waitstaff is optional, but hardly anybody ever does unless service is extra ordinary.

But then again, waiters already get payed well above minimum wage. The only people in the service industry who may get minimum wage are people in the fast-food industry, but even there it would depend.
Minimum wage is $11.06 + 20 days of legally required fully payed vacation every year.

With tipping being so unusual for me, and with not really knowing when it's appropriate or not, I'm happy that my husband pays in about 99% of the cases that require a tip, so I can just let him take care of it.

tazzygirl -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 8:16:10 PM)

It is confusing for people from other countries.,... which is why I like that site from PropperTipping.

We have a french bistro type restaurant close to us. The husband is american, the wife french. The husband tips well, the wife doesnt tip at all.

How much to tip in France

As a rule, service charge in France as well as in other Mediterranean countries is in the range of 10 – 15 percent of the total bill. Usually, the menu indicates that the charge has already been included in the prices listed. When the menu says “service not included” there will be a note of the amount of the charge at the end of the bill. Though the service is included, it is also customary to give something extra if delighted.

It would be great if people would brush up on the countries they are visiting.

Hair dressers and such, I tip 10%. I do not want to piss off the woman who does my hair.

The way I look at it is this.... if they are providing me a service, and it is not against the rules, I will tip something.

I even "tip" the mailman and paperboy at Christmas.

It hasn't come up for me since moving here. I've only been to a salon once, and then somebody else payed.
While with Ty and Natalie, I was expected to do my own hair. They generally didn't want to spend the money on it.

Since leaving them, I've been in the odd situation where my husband's ex-wife's stepmother (we have a tighter relationship to his ex-wife's parents because of the grandkids than his ex-wife does) does my hair, because she basically insisted. She refuses to be be payed for it, on account that she's a retired professional hairdresser and just relishes the opportunity to practice her craft every now and then.

But if I ever turn to a salon again, I'll be sure to tip. You're right, you don't want to piss off the person that does your hair.

Yep. But you never know. You just don't know. I've had more females lose out on a better tip from me because she assumed that because *I* am female, I don't tip. I always tip, and I tip well............

Dingdingding!! I hate this. I always give 15-20%. I feel too guilty to not do so. It really gripes me to get that "women are crappy tippers" attitude though.

I also hate the fact that waiters are paid so poorly. I would far prefer to a have a decent wage built into the cost of my meal.

Since she refuses to be paid, you might do something nice for her. Bake her cookies, take her to lunch one day, have a "girl's day" where you both go for a mani/pedi and insist you pay.

When my nana stopped driving, I used to take her on errands and she ALWAYS wanted to give me money for "gas" and my time. She couldn't understand that I wanted to take her and enjoyed spending the time. So I worked out a deal with her. If she really felt the need to "do" something, I told her to make me shortbread cookies, lol.

She felt she was "paying" for what I did, and I got a regular supply of my favorite cookies that she made.

TIPS stands for To Insure Prompt Service

That's actually a myth. Neither Tip nor tips is an acronym. That's just one of those things that gets circulated around with no real source.

popeye1250 -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 10:07:05 PM)

I worked in restaurant kitchens after school so I know the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.
I always tip the Dominos pizza guy or girl $5 and they appreciate it very much. One girl said some people don't tip or tip only a dollar or two.
And I tip 20% in restaurants. I can't remember the last time I rode in a cab but I'd tip them good too.
You have to take care of the people who take care of you!
I even tip cops. "Here Officer here's $50 bucks."
"You don't tip the police!"
"Sure you do!"

I just make sure they've got coffee in the winter and cold bottles of water in the summer when they're running speed traps out of my parking lot. LOL

I have mixed feelings on this (and I've waitressed in the past).

Essentially your employer is requiring the customer to subsidize your wages (which should be covered in the cost of the products/service you are purchasing). TIPS stands for To Insure Prompt Service and should be in proportion to the value of the service you have provided. Lousy service, lousy tip. Average service, average tip. Stellar service, stellar tip.

I'm more generous in tips than Master is, which is why when we go out I ALWAYS get the tip ;) regardless of who pays for the meal.

Depending on where your customer is from, it may not be customary to tip.

TIPS stands for a program servers and bartenders go through to become certified in alcohol service.

http://gettips.com/

TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) is the global leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale, and consumption of alcohol. Proven effective by third-party studies, TIPS is a skills-based training program that is designed to prevent intoxication, underage drinking, and drunk driving.

Rule of thumb here is 15% in restaurants.....

Was surprised to hear we Canucks tend to be lousy tippers

Don't know why you were surprised, your opening sentence pretty much sums it up. Look at the fine print on the menu in nice restaurants. It (usually) says "Parties of 6 or more will automatically include an 18% gratuity."

15% is less than that. There may have been a time where 15% was fine, but those days are over. 18% is the bare minimum now, assuming the server was not bad, but not great.

If the drinks were never empty and you like your server, 20% - 25% is a much more accepted percentage.

heartcream -> RE: Cheap Bastards!!!! (11/23/2011 10:30:25 PM)

I love threads about tipping and so on. So much fun. Rarely gets snarky and rude.

I have worked as a Server in 3 states, including Manhattan and many places here in Canada and still do to this very day.

I have learned over the years, as others have mentioned, to go into the experience treating people my very best no matter how they may appear. I have learned you just do not know who is sitting at your table. Some of the best dressed, nicest people might tip poorly and the grubbiest, poorest people can leave a big heap of money. I find it hard to deal with people who are rude to me from the get go. I find it so hard to even utter, "Thank you" to them. I push myself as best I can to follow through with good service but I draw back my heart somewhat. My favorite antidote is when a table within hearing distance has cottoned onto their treatment, and amp up adoring looks and treatment of me. I feel validated and suddenly a little less horrible. I could tell you stories.

I always tip my dishwasher because I have had that job and it is the hardest job ever. I like men who can tip. I like women who can. I like being around people who come in to have an Experience. I can facilitate and help design their meal and drinks. It turns me on when I can freely engage like this. People coming to enjoy themselves are cool.

Other lousy tippers:

Welfare recipients.

Country club people (the members, not the employees).

Canadians (sorry to my Canadian friends here on CM but the truth must be told).

Teen agers.

Social security recipients.

I can understand someone on a fixed income giving no more than the standard amount but I don’t care what a persons situation is… if you can’t give a decent tip, don’t engage the service. These people need their tips.

And folks, I’m far from rich myself but I pride myself on being a generous tipper and I implore everyone to do the same. Make someone’s day… especially if they look like they’re over worked and are having a lousy day.

The Canadian thing is probably due to the exchange rates, since most of the time the Canadian dollar was considerably lower and that can really eat into your money..

Personally, I do try to tip relatively well. The exception is if I have had really poor service or poor attitude, then they get squat...

You know, this happens more than people realize. You have worked your butt off to please a table.. and you simply cant... because the table is acting like asses. The next table is watching... I often hear from those tables "You are doing a wonderful job!" or "I could never put up with morons like them". The best is when the table who is acting like an idiot suddenly realizes all the tables around them are realizing just how poorly they have treated the server. And the money I may have lost on that one table is almost always made up for on the others.

We tip Domino's 20% since moving to Montrose, which is not at all what we'd usually tip the pizza guy.
But since moving here, the longest we have EVER had to wait for pizza was 20min.
Usually they get here in in 15, sometimes less than that. I've NEVER had service like that from a pizza delivery place.
And it's not even like we live that close or anything either, they're in the center of town and we're on the far edge.
