Have you tried making a very simple dish with rice? Just boil rice and maybe mix in a few dried lentils for colour and taste, then depending which veg you have on hand, cut in veg, fill it all in a baking dish, use a sauce you made yourself (or even tastier with soup), bake for 30 minutes, then put a bit of cheese on top and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes.

No, but that will be a good idea, I have 3 meals planned for this next week that has meat, I may cut one of those out and do a rice and beans and veggies meal.

Yes. it makes sense, I drink Crystal light the on the go packets, that fill up one bottle of water about every few days,I was drinking it more, like once everyday but just naturally slacked off now most days it's weeks and weeks before I have one unless I am on a kick and then it's once a day maybe twice a day.

Yes. I've had Wylers, it's generic crystal light and it sucks, in my opinion it's no where as tasty as Crystal light, and they don't have the same amount of choices, and I wasn't able to find Peach tea to my recollection

Crystal light is sweetened with Splenda, but they now make boxes with real sugar, but they cost more and I am ok with the ones sweetened with splenda.

I'm not sure what my blood sugar was I want to say she said it was 140. she said if you look at me overall I am not diabetic but if you look at my blood fasting levels, they indicate I am, so it's kind of confusing, and when I was testing my BS every morning I was not super high, not where I should be, i want to say 111 or around there. I can't remember I stopped testing a while ago because at that point it wasn't necessary to test everyday.

No I didn't know that I don't drink either drinks so I wouldn't know their sugar stats. When I was a kid though KoolAid was popular

Did they ever say what your A1C1 level is?  The A1C1 measures your blood sugar over the past 90 days so it is a good indicator of average sugar levels.

Perhaps i chose the wrong meals cause they needed things like italian parsley and those were not cheap, not horribly expensive but not cheap, like 3 bucks for the parsley. It sucks cause there was no money left over for other things, like snacks and stuff to tide us over in between meals after we bought for the 3- 4 meals.

Next time I'm going to go more for rice and beans and stuff like that.

Also you can make your own ice tea from herbal tea and seriously cut down on the sugar/splenda that it needs.  Slowly cutting down the sweetener you put in tea or coffee will help you lose weight without even trying.

I will make herbal ice tea using a mixture of chamomile (sometimes the one that is honey and chamomile), Bigalow's Constant Comfort (an orange spice that reminds me of autumn), lemon zinger, mint, and apple cinnamon.  Use whatever herbal teas you like.  I don't like the berry teas, but they will be sweet on their own.  Also, if you use the apple, don't use more than one or two unless you really like apple cinnamon tea, as that flavor will overpower everything else.  But the berry and apple teas make the tea sweet without sugar.

Reactions to artificial sweeteners are very individual.

I don't have an issue with them.

For the most part, parsley is parsley...Italian parsley just has a flat leaf.

If you are eating correctly, the only snacks you need are a handful of nuts or an apple.

The reason why 4-5 basic meals costso much is because you have no food staples. What I buy and make sure I have on hand, you have hardly heard of. You don't know how to use your staples, so I would imagine you are feeling very lost now.

I'm not sure how to really help you.

I could give you a list of what is in my cupboard, staple wise.

As you build staples, the cheaper meals will be.

You can also just do dried herbs depending on the dish - I rarely buy fresh, or use fresh unless I am growing my own.  You just have to remember dried herbs are more potent then fresh so you use less.  (Granted there are some things you need fresh for, but most everyday meals you can make do with dried.)

Correctly as in all you need to eat to be healthy, or eating healthily, and then therefor most snacks are not healthy, because if it's healthily and most snacks are not healthy ,I disagree. There's plenty of healthy snacks out there other than apples or nuts. Only apples and or nuts only are boring. Under the guidance of the last person I was working with I was supposed to eat 5-6 times a day, small meals. breakfast, then 2 hours later a snack, then lunch, then 2 hours after lunch a snack, then dinner, and after dinner before bedtime,if I needed it to combat the sunrise thing where diabetics blood sugar spikes high over night , a snack again before bedtime.

There's also other meals to be considered than just the dinner items we got for 4 meals. I don't have any breakfast stuff, except eggs, and 4 apples, which will last for a while, cause our chickens give us about 6 eggs a day, per chicken and we have 9 chickens, but I would of liked other things to have for breakfast other than eggs and apples.

Plus I am not the only one to consider , Daddy wants to be able to afford to buy things he wants. I can't hog all the grocery money, and on stuff that won't last us more than 3 or 4 days at a time.

Sweetie, think of what you are saying.

I'm not going to argue with you about how many times a day you need to eat. From what I have read you are either hungry all the time, not hungry, eat way too much, etc.

You have issues.

If you want to address them, then start eating correctly. Which means eat whenever you are hungry, but make sure it is healthy. This is a basic and you can't go wrong with it.

Now, your original post was the cost of your food bill. This is because you do not have a supply of staples in your cupboard. Once you get used to the idea that you need onion, flour, garlic, rice, whatever, that will be easier to factor in with your food budget.

You are doing very well. try to find reasons to like it though, not to hate it.

A pork shoulder roast was 26 dollars and another smaller roast type meat was 20 dollars for the whole thing, so I said oh hell no to those.

3 pounds ground beef which was 9 bucks and split into half will make 2 meals

3 pounds chicken which was 8 bucks and will make 1 crock pot meal that will stretch a few days hopefully.

3-4 whole onions

ground cumin and ground garlic powder, which we bought from the bulk bin it was 5 bucks a pound but we only got a little over a teaspoon, so it was less than a few cents.

1 15-ounce can pinto beans, drained and rinsed

4 or 5 bell peppers which were about 4-5 dollars Give or take..

I forget the ounce size but it was a medium, carton dairy sour cream

1 package of carb balance tortilla's whole wheat, it was 5 bucks, but so worth it.

3 packages of cream cheese, that were less than 1 a piece, 1 to use soon, and 2 others to keep on hand for future uses.
1 10-ounce can enchilada sauce \

cauliflower

1 can (2.2 ounces) sliced black olives

a bushel of scallions,

bunch fresh thyme sprigs

1 gallon milk

turnips

fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley

1 bag of cheese

Rotissery chicken to have as part of dinner one night and then make stock out of the carcass at a shortly later date.

5-6 yogurts 58 cents each and one 1 dollar greek yogurt,

A package of pretzle sticks and white and brown chocolate for a baking project for the family and the people at the rescue I volunteer at

1 12 piece bag of assorted flavors of string cheese, I got sharp yellow and motzerella in 1 bag

a bag of carrots , which were 2 bugs for a huge bag.

4-5 apples

and a bunch of banna's for Daddy at 58 cents a pound.

I needed pizza dough that came in a bunch already made and frozen, but Daddy said he could make it fresh for me the day I needed it and it'd be mostly free probably.

All these items are part of the meals I have planned for the next week. I'm planning on cooking one home cooked meal every 2-3 days. So like a home cooked on M a home cooked on W a home cooked on F and wash rice and repeat for the next week

Portion control is tough. I pray I never become diabetic, the tiny frequent meals nauseate me.

TFTB, can you find someone to help you set up your pantry? As Chatte says if you have basic ingredients, cooking is much simpler and you don't run out of food.

I am largely lucky that my parents have a lot of things too, like garlic salt and some spices, and flour and sugar andmillet and hulled barley and well lots of things. we had so many canned items, like cans of fruit, and cans of vegetables and re fried beans* and yes they can be healthy, just read the label and choose smartly* and stuff like that in fact some of them went bad cause they were in the pantry to long. That was before I was cooking for myself.

Depending on what it is you're looking for I can raid their stuff and they don't mind, but I did have Daddy buy our own supply of dried beans and stuff like that, and if we need pasta I will buy my own brand of pasta because I will be getting the dreamfield pasta that's only 5 carbs a serving, instead of the regular pasta.

Somethings it's just best to go out and get your own supply.

Yeah, it is. It's one reason I like pre packaged things with a serving size already determined for you, like wheathins, 1 serving is 11 and for those 11 of those nutrition stats are mapped out for you. So all you have to do is get some little ziplock bags and count out 11 for each bag until the box is gone and they've all been bagged, it makes it so easy and mindless.

My mom and dad have shit loads of this that and the other I could raid from their pantry stash, they don't mind me using their spices and what not when I need to cook, but like I said in my reply to Chatte, there's somethings I want for myself because I will be using different brands than my parents.

On the ground beef, you are thinking a pound and a half for two people per meal. Am I getting this right?

B/c this is way too much. We routinely buy ground beef in bulk from out local butcher. We take some of those pounds and break them down for the man when he wants to cook. He suses 1/3 lb of ground beef just for him, and this is a hearty portion.

So I am not getting the 1 1/2 pounds per meal.

I looked over your shopping list. Stop buying canned pintos, they can be made in your crock pot with minimal fuss and much cheaper

You included an already made chicken, plus pricey snack type things for your volunteer work. Come on, can you really honestly call that a normal food bill item?

You don't yet know much about shopping. If you want, it can get better. If you don't, things will get worse.

You decide.

Does any one have a simple chicken stock and tomato puree recipe that don't call for like 5-10 diff ingredients and 10 diff steps? I'm not going to make it from scratch if it's going to take 30 minutes to cook and 20 minutes of prep, which a lot of these recipes I am finding do. also I need enough broth to make 32 ounces and paste to make

I made this chicken broth in my slow cooker for the first time last week and it came out great..I cut the recipe in half though.

The recipe feeds 6-8 people and calls for 1/2 pound lean ground beef and my parents will also be eating with us. When I cook unless they have already eaten I cook for all four of us, so you need enough to feed the basic 4 of us, and then enough for the 3 of us to have seconds if we wish, and this family is big on seconds. I say 3 because I will try not to have seconds. Though I suppose I could tell e very one I am trying to have left overs, so no seconds please. My mom does that now and then when she cooks something big like a roast, and wants plenty left over for a stew tomorow.

The canned pinto beans are probably cheaper to get canned than scratch cause they were 68 cents. If you can make them cheaper and faster than 68 cents and open instantly then I'll stop buying canned and make them home made.

I am not looking for meals I have to break into parts, such as crock potting home made pinto beans, and then prepairing the actual meal.

Fast, and easy and simple and healthy is the game here. If instant provides that and for 68 cents. I'll do instant.

the rottisery chicken was 4 dollars and some odd change, very handy, but I can see how it's not something people who want to cook and season their own whole chicken would want in their cart. Or if you had other items you needed to get too.

Yes, pretzels and stuff like that are normally bought items around here. these were just a few bucks and there's about 2 dozen or so in there. He'd normally buy junk food items cause they're cheap and you tend to get a lot of bang amount wise for your buck for those items. Daddy loves chips and dips, and pretzels and junky pre packaged items.

I myself am trying to do better for myself, so I don't like them as much as I used to
