ORIGINAL: Marc2b I am very conflicted by this topic. There is a part of me… the rebellious, anti-authoritarian, rebellion-for the-sake-of-rebellion… part that wholly approves of “guerilla” art. But another part of me finds the whole notion to be the self-aggrandizing and very immature. Much of it depends, I suppose, on whether or not we like the work in question. If we like it, then it is “art.” If we don’t like it, then it is “graffiti.” In the end it all comes down to respect. If you respect others, their rights, their property, then you are not going to deface such property with bullshit “tags” that really do nothing more that proclaim “I was here” or “this is my turf.” It is the “artistic” equivalent of a four year old’s temper tantrum. So, if all you’re going to do is spray paint vulgar language, your initials, or some repetitive “icon,” then I’d say grow up, get a life, and maybe take a shot at some “serious” art (many cities now have art center where studio space can be rented). If you are going to engage in some guerilla art then at least put some thought into it and make it something that (at least) some people will appreciate (ya can’t please everybody) and will generate serious controversy and discussion. One of my favorite examples of what I’d call guerilla art is the late great Pink Lady of Malibu. Here are some photos of the Pink Lady in color. I understand the grafitti on the walls of the baths in pompei have some stunning examples of art and prose...much of it on the order of "for a good time call xxx". Yesterdays" childish ,self-aggrandizing and very immature scrawls" with the “artistic” merit of a four year old’s temper tantrum. Have become todays historical treasures. Whodathunkit
