Status: offline 		The long and short of it is that the new president is already being heralded as the next Saddam, and has issued an arrest warrant for the vice president. With the vice president escaping to the North in response to the arrest warrant, his constituents have apparently bombed the presidents' constituents. Since the deadline from the president is this weekend, it would not be surprising if the long awaited civil war starts in earnest next week.

Fortunately for him, Iran will undoubtedly be happy to help him quell the "rebellion" and thus ensure world peace...

Which will make Israel ecstatically happy... and force them to order the USA to attack the buggers... again... and I'm guessing the parallells to the First Gulf War are obvious, since that's precisely what happened the last time around, though it's not popular to admit it. Don't expect that deficit to stop at a few paltry trillion... you're not done yet.

Needless to say, I've got my potassium iodide and water filter in order.

Status: offline 		The bigger danger to peace may not be Iran, but Syria. The rebels there are Sunni and said to be recieving arms from the Iraqi Sunnis. So if Syria turns into a Sunni led state, right on Iraqs doorstep, who knows what will happen. That would leave a well armed Sunni Power on two sides of Iraq and a Shia power on one side.

Status: offline 		This is part of why Iraq was doing comparatively well under Saddam... he never much got into the Christmas spirit... you know, after-mass suicide bombings and the like... fun for everyone, except Saddam doesn't get it, so he tells everyone to cut it out or have vital parts of themselves cut out and fed to a donkey. Net result, one Christmas tradition less for the duration of his reign, and Santa goes missing some elves in horribly dark dungeons somewhere. Amnesty weeps. Stability prevails.

Nigeria... that's the confederacy all over again... well, minus literacy, technology, resources, black slaves and adequate arable land for cotton.

Seriously, though, the country is literally split in the middle and fighting over what kind of government to apply to all of it.

That, and they want to get rid of education and other corrupting influences, of course; very stateside.

Status: offline 		Well, the reason you haven't thought about that is you are rather ignorant in political doings, knowledge and reality.  If it didnt come from Rush or Faux Nuze it didnt happen with you regardless of the facts.

That has been the way of that area for centuries, a strong Mukhtar unites the various clans and factions from a pissant little chain of warm camel shit traders (or whatever) into a country and they trade their camel shit a little sharper and have a little better life, with an iron hand and putting down the confluences of scarey shit and infighting, in the day we called them Kings or Emporors,  and it wasnt at all unique to the middle east, nor africa, its how you got on this planet.  If that didnt happen with your forefathers for generation upon generation you would not be here with us to be so wholly untutored in these matters.

Anyways, back on topic...

The way I see this playing out isn't pretty. The Shia majority takeover Iraq and when true civil war beaks out, Iran gets involved to protect their co-religionists. The Kurds in the north start agitating for unity with the Kurdish minority in southern Turkey and begin their own seperatist campaign there, forcing Turkey to begin cracking down on the Kurds in Turkey. As things escalate between Shia and Sunni, Syria gets more involved to protect the Sunni minority in Iraq (and potentially the other Sunni states stick their hands in as well).

Potentially, a war breaks out across the entire Middle East along ethnic/religious lines.

At some point, the U. S. will get involved. I just don't see us washing our hands of the whole region. As it is, we're already in Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Pakistan and we're talking about getting involved in Iran and Syria.

Try and head off the trainwreck now, or take a breather for a year or so and then fight a full-scale multi-nation war?

Perhaps this is one reason why the views of looney Right are so off the planet. If their views are based on fantasies that have no resemblance to reality (such as Sanity's figures above), then it make some kind of sense for their analysis and policies to be so wretchedly wrong. We could understand why they're so pathetic.

Time, events and a mountain of corpses (both American and Iraqi) have demonstrated the neo-con/looney Right take on Iraq was hopelessly wrong. None of the anticipated benefits actuated. There was 8 years of war, not the promised few weeks at most (and it's still far from over now). The Iraqi people don't view foreign soldiers as liberators, they can't get rid of them fast enough (We were promised that the Iraqis would shower our "liberating" troops with flowers). The entire strategic balance of the region has regressed with Iran emerging far more powerful and influential (as well as being in de facto control of Iraq). The US is even more hated in the region than it was before the invasion. (We were promised a more pro-Western Govt in Iraq, a buttress against expanding Iranian influence.)

I could go on ... and on ... but why bother? Iraq has been a disaster from Day 1 as leftists everywhere predicted. The only thing we got wrong was that we didn't predict precisely how complete a disaster it would turn out to be. Neo-con politics, policies and personnel are utterly discredited everywhere. Neo-cons have gone from positions of influence to pariah status, politically speaking.

Give it away Sanity, you guys lost this argument years ago.

While its correct that we "only" freed 26 million Iraqis, the obfuscation point was regarding a different post, wherein mnot was trying to claim that the Iraqi people had a vote prior to the liberation

I swear, if leftists didnt have typos to attack "the messenger" with (or misstatements), or this very obfuscation... and so on, they wouldnt have anything to post!
