That doesnt translate into completely transparent. You have proof his isnt as transparent as others before him?

Jump to 2 minutes in. It's quite funny.

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 8:03:14 AM)

I always find Stewart funny... and quite accurate. Sadly, you missed what was actually said. The notion of complete transparency in the WH is a joke... no matter who promotes the notion. Anyone who took Obama's words on this issue was fooling only himself.

Raiikun -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 8:17:33 AM)

I'm not familiar with Obama saying "completely transparent", I just know of the quote where he said "I wanna create a White House that is more transparent and accountable than any government we've seen before."

So that's one thing Popeye did hit rather on the nose when he said:

quote:

Remember when Obama said,.....that his admin. would be the most transparent?

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 8:57:16 AM)

He never said completely transparent. How transparent were the others? Do we know Obama is hiding more than the others, less, the same amount?

Its a rather silly argument because it can never be proven.

Noone ever claimed he said completely transparent, so I guess I'm not sure why it was brought up hehe.

But the weirdness of what's being covered up (I mean, almost 200 pages censored regarding efforts to be more transparent? lol) certainly doesn't give any reason to believe it's not business as usual when it comes to transparency.

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 9:08:35 AM)

Thats pretty much what I said.

He is different, in many ways. Or did you take that to mean he was different in every way?

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 11:52:58 AM)

Meaning you cant. Thank you.

And why cant they close it? Come on, you know the answer to that.

http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/promise/177/close-the-guantanamo-bay-detention-center/

Mason Clutter, policy counsel for the Constitution Project, a bipartisan group that has called for shutting the prison, pointed to a provision of the order that reads: "In the event detainees covered by this order are transferred from Guantanamo to another U.S. detention facility where they remain in law of war detention, this order shall continue to apply to them."

That suggests the administration is still committed to pursuing other alternatives to Guantanamo, Clutter said,

So does she think that will happen by the end of an Obama first term?

"Absolutely not," Clutter said.

There are still 172 people being held at Guantanamo, Clutter said. Congress has pretty well tied the administration's hands, prohibiting prosecution in U.S. federal courts and making it extremely difficult to transfer them to other countries, according to Clutter.

"Even if the review board determines someone should be released," Clutter said, "it will be hard to transfer them out of Guantanamo."

Sanity -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 11:58:41 AM)

Sorry taz, no - that means look up yesterdays news yourself

And seriously - did you really miss Obamas signing the act that enables his administration to now strip citizens of their rights, and hold them in Guantanamo indefinitely... ?

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 12:08:14 PM)

If you post is as fact, then its up to you to present those facts. Since you wont, it means you cant. Enough about that.

Nope, didnt miss it at all. Who proposed that law? Congress.

quote:

The bill also contains provisions making it difficult to transfer suspects out of military detention, which prompted FBI Director Robert Mueller to testify that it could jeopardize criminal investigations. It also restricts the transfers of cleared detainees from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay to foreign countries for resettlement or repatriation, making it more difficult to close Guantanamo, as President Obama pledged to do in one of his first acts in office.

http://www.aclu.org/national-security/president-obama-signs-indefinite-detention-bill-law

quote:

The president defended his action, writing that he signed the act, “chiefly because it authorizes funding for the defense of the United States and its interests abroad, crucial services for service members and their families, and vital national security programs that must be renewed.”

Senior administration officials, who asked not to be named, told ABC News, “The president strongly believes that to detain American citizens in military custody infinitely without trial, would be a break with our traditions and values as a nation, and wants to make sure that any type of authorization coming from congress, complies with our Constitution, our rules of war and any applicable laws.”
One official explained that President Obama does believe, however, that American citizens can be temporarily detained, and that the military has the right to capture and hold any citizen who is engaged in conflict against the United States. If various provisions in the law prove unworkable, the president could go back to Congress to ask for changes.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/with-reservations-obama-signs-act-to-allow-detention-of-citizens/

Sounds to me like a battle for the SCOTUS... with the ACLU against this, its almost ensured to end up in the Supreme's laps with the first attempt to detain under this law.

Funding of US defense vs vetoing a law that will, at least I have no doubt, be overturned in court.... hmmm

mnottertail -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 12:08:49 PM)

Congress added provisions that took the ultimate authority to detain suspects from the military's hands and gave it to the president. Congress also clarified that civilian law enforcement agencies -- such as the FBI -- would still have authority to investigate terrorism and added a provision that asserts nothing in the detention measures changes current law regarding U.S. citizens.

So, he didn't quite sign what you think he signed.

tazzygirl -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 12:15:09 PM)

I pointed that out before, Master Ron, and was told I didnt know what I was reading.

Lucylastic -> RE: Remember when Obama said....... (1/7/2012 12:20:31 PM)
