One thing that struck me, if this is to be taken as statement on race relations, is the seeming tendency of the young lady to equate plain old boorish behavior, with the sort of condescending racism she parodies. Sometimes, people aren't ignorant assholes because there is a race component, it's just because they are ignorant assholes. And "ghetto." That's a word with a long and loaded history, but I wasn't aware it was now a racial slur. They come in all colors, and are pretty well integrated in my little part of the world. The word, in its new use, seems to be taking the place of "trailer trash," as I hear it used.

It requires a bit of sophistication to recognize whether a comment or word is meant to cause insult or if it`s just a figure of speech. A group of elderly Jewish men can call each other old Jews but I wouldn`t recommend that just anyone use that term. Same with the n-word or any of it`s variants.I have no sympathy for whites who feel offended about not being able to also use that word. If it needs to be explained why,get a life.At the very least tho,subjects like these should be avoided.

FR I don't think ghetto has taken the place of trailer trash. The insult is more or less the same but they aren't interchangeable. Trailer trash is reserved for white people , ghetto is reserved for black people. Of course there are people who aren't white who live in trailer parks and ghettos which have been around in all sorts of places for a longtime aren't just places where black people have lived. Both are class insults but ghetto has the added sting of some idiot white people assuming pretty much all black people live in ghettos. And just because black people might use the word ironically or with humor or as a putdown doesn't mean they like white people saying it I think Dom Corleone said something about some things stay within the family. Gay people can joke with and use insults towards other gay people that if a straight person used would be offensive. This is true of all groups. And, yes some of the behavior parodied in the video could be called boorish. No doubt people who habitually say ignorant things like what was said in the video, most likely say all sorts of ignorant things. But a lot of boorish behavior comes from self absorbed cluelessness instead of maliciousness. And I think the video was parodying cluelessness more than deliberate malice.

A few years ago the phrase 'That's so gay' was bandied about as a putdown for all sorts of things. That wealthy trailer trash girl Paris Hilton was fond of it. Many gay people were offended. There was even a PSA about it. Words have meanings, words hurt, think about what you're saying etc. It would seem obvious that some things are just rude but the obvious is lost on some people.

I don't find the video funny. It doesn't parody what she intends. It highlights how far we have come to be "politically correct" in the face of those who are easily offended... Well dear O.P....the title of your thread which includes the word (s**t) certainly comes off as sounding very racist to me! As to reference to any original, I'd never heard nor seen these videos before, so I couldn't speak for them. I only know that I lasted a very short period of time in watching the video. I don't find racial putdowns funny on a video because quite frankly, I don't find them funny in real life. On any given day, you can hear racial slurs the kids yell from street corners at each other on their way home from school. Armed police officers are pulling extra duty by standing inside the doors of grocery stores in lower income parts of the city to discourage fighting between different racial and ethnic young adults. And adults are finger-pointing and cursing under their breath. I don't care if your skin is blue, or purple, and if you were born on a mountain, on in a cave. People are people to me. And we're all part of the grand scope of a very great human family!

Used what way, Owner59? "Any low income neighborhood you'd rather not be out in?" The clerk at my local convenience store used it that way just the other day. He was telling me that he and his girl had enough money together to move out of the ghetto, and they were renting a place over by the high school. He's not black, and the area he was talking about reflects our local racial diversity pretty well.
