People who claim the moral high ground on any topic terrify me. Not because they claim the moral high ground, but because most of them honestly fucking believe they deserve it.

Meanwhile, those that do are usually the biggest goddamn bigots you'll ever encounter.

The things the Catholic Church has shouldn't be for sale?  You mean the things they stole from Central America, Africa and where ever else they could lay their hands on things?  I think your man is right, Lucy, the stuff shouldn't be sold.  It should be returned to its rightful owners, meaning the cultures that the church systematically devastated.

Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry debated a couple of catholics on whether the Catholic Church is a force for good in the world.  The overwhelming answer was "no".  Hard to say it better than these two.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCdnh7G87m4

I know much of what they possess are gifts from bequests, donations, stolen goods from other cultures. They also possess far more than we know at this point. I believe the vow of poverty should extend up the ladder.

Yes, it's a slippery slope, next thing you know, Catholic priests will want to marry.

They had that right at one time.

World over population - currently at 7 billion and growing - is a far more serious and immediate threat to the "future of humanity" than anything gays and lesbians could possibly do.

The Catholic Church's absurd opposition to contraception, based on an arcane interpretation of a non-existent "Natural Law", feeds directly into the problem of overpopulation. It's imposition of an obsolete reproductive morality enslaves tens of millions of women world wide and condemns hundreds of millions to lives of unrelenting squalor and poverty, while simultaneously facilitating the spread of blood borne diseases such as HIV.

Unless there's a radical change of policy, the Catholic Church can be seen as a far more sinister threat to the "future of humanity" than gay marriage could ever possibly be.

I was just thinking that tweak. The population is 7 billion... and he worries about the decline in the numbers?

Pope Benedict said Monday that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined "the future of humanity itself."

You know who really 'undermined the future of humanity".

The Nazis. Nazis like this "Pope Benedict".

FUCK THAT NAZI PIECE OF SHIT!

Lucylastic -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/10/2012 3:33:49 PM)

farglebargle -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/10/2012 4:12:23 PM)

Hey, if Pope Benedict didn't want to be called a Nazi, he shouldn't have helped them.

tazzygirl -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/10/2012 4:16:16 PM)

I dont know if I would call being conscripted at age 14 as being "helpful".

Actually, it was that married men could become priests (marriage had to come before ordination)....and in some Rites they still can. My mother was raised Ukranian Greek Catholic and her parish priest was a married man with 4 kids.

Lucylastic -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/10/2012 4:28:44 PM)

opinions arent facts ..callin him a nazi is pointless and really NOT what I give a shit about

Not till after the 4th century.

325-Council of Nicea: decreed that after ordination a priest could not marry. Proclaimed the Nicene Creed.

Aswad -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/10/2012 9:15:18 PM)

That is just sad.

He's grossly overstepping the bounds of his mandate, and without the tact, sensitivity and overall humanity of his predecessor, who was focused on making headway on issues that were shared among humans across denominations, rather than these hot button topics that are only destructive to latch on to, regardless of what one might think about the matter. By now, he should know that he isn't exactly the most charismatic person around, and if he paid any attention to his predecessor, he should also know that the position can only be as viable as the person holding it. It's a bit early to expect the cardinals to start greasing the stairs, but this doesn't exactly count as a good move by a pope elected as an interrim due to an unresolvable tie, tearing down so much positive momentum.

Health,
al-Aswad.

At the age of 13 in my religion, a person is considered to have reached the age of maturity.

Here are options he could have explored instead of assisting in the Nazi slaughter of over 12 million civilians:

1) Hide in an attic until arrested and dragged to the death camps

2) Murder German Soldiers using acts of guerilla warfare and terrorism until captured and sentenced to death.

3) Move.

My religion (Kiratism) requires a fully matured brain. We differ in that respect. [:D]

Perhaps, but the fact that he's changed his story about why and how he wasn't significantly involved in the nazi war effort five or six times now. That suggests that he was up to something that he feels ashamed about during the war, and also calls into question whether he's quite as infallible as the Pope is meant to be, doesn't it?

Moonhead -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/11/2012 5:03:44 AM)

Also (frivolously):

"Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future" (Pope)

Ain't quite The Dunciad, is it? Alexander's prose has taken a nosedive since he was dead...

Fetters4U -> RE: Gay marriage a threat to humanity's future: Pope (1/11/2012 6:00:39 AM)

Actually, the Pope means that gay marriage is a threat to the church's future, and is thus being a hypocrite but not an idiot.

The Roman Catholic priesthood is a perfect beard for gay men. Consequently, conservative estimates are that in western nations, over 70% of priests are gay. Once gays are widely accepted and able to lead the full lives they deserve, there will be no need for them to become priests. Once they drop out of the priest pool, the church will have a vast shortage of manpower. Moreover, most of the priests they have left will be pedophiles or true believers, and no one wants them around.

It is a pity the Pope did not list the other "threats to humanity". The Roman Catholic church would be in my top five for sure. The harm they have caused in the last 1000 years is incalculable.

By the way, isn't the Pope a single guy in his later years, known for being obsessively interested in fashion and dressing well? He is prissy and fastidious. Hey, I am just saying...

Ed
