There's a difference between a toddler and a 14 year old. We all expect a 14 year old to know that murdering 12 million innocent people is wrong, and that HELPING THEM is also wrong, don't we?

This is true, but the war lasted a while, and he was older than 14 by the time it ended. They didn't have a lot of 14 year olds in the wehrmacht, after all.

And either commanded an anti aircraft battery (but shot to miss) or served in the infantry (but didn't shoot at anybody because he'd hurt his finger and couldn't aim a rifle).

Fargle. seriously. How many rank and file Germans actually knew what was happening in the camps?

I daresay that except for the General officers (and not nearly all of them) and those who actually worked there, the average German (Including grunts on the line) had no freaking idea what their government was doing.

There's opinions both way about that, sadly: most of the country knew that something was going on, though it's a lot easier to sleep at night if you think that most didn't know what exactly that was.
Certainly the final solution was the SS's problem not the Wehrmacht's., though.

Personally, I dislike the Pope and pretty much everything he stands for.  I don't feel the need, however, to reach back to WW II to justify my belief that he is a corrupt and immoral human being.  The last ten years provides plenty of evidence of that.

However, if he is going to come out with all of this gay bashing horseshit every time he opens his trap, the Nazi thing is possibly more relevant than the church believes.

That being said, Ratzinger's present unpalatable self is sufficient grounds to judge on without getting into what he did as a kid.

In fact, why get hung up on personalities at all?

There's an entire mythology known as 'The Natural Law" which underpins the Catholic (and other religious) beliefs in this area. This is the intellectual basis on which Ratzinger (or whoever) promulgates his nonsense. This Law stipulates that a human's primary role is to reproduce and nothing should be allowed to interfere with this. It promotes compulsory heterosexuality, declares any non-normative sexual preference/practice is "perverse" and provides the logical basis for opposition to contraception, abortion, divorce and non-reproductive sexual practices. In other words, it has pejorative implications each and every one of us. As well as for queers, women, children, the Third World ...............

Needless to say, the 'Natural' Law is pure human invention. It's wholly un-Natural. It's in every pervert's direct interest to oppose, challenge and trash this odious idea, and the even more odious ideology founded on it, any and every time we can.
