Some of the best carpentry work I have ever seen was done by the Amish.

I've grown up around them and I don't even try to keep them straight. Hell, in talking to some, they cannot keep it all straight as far as a national level.

Same here.

I think I grew up with members of the Beachy church, primarily, and then several others have been moving into the area over the last couple of decades.  Kentucky didn't have any Old Order until recently, and they are the ones now in conflict about the triangles.

We have some communities that drive buggies with triangles, some that drive with tape, some that drive only black cars, some that drive only dark color cars, etc.  You never know which church they belong too, but sometimes you can make a good guess.  Until you guess wrong.

We have several schools as well.  Some of the best construction crews are made up of them as well.

One of my oldest son's best friends growing up was a Beachy family who had decided to leave the church and enter the wider world.  They attended the Baptist private school with my son, and he ran a construction company.

Very good people.

Firm

and they are being punished by the MOBsters, even here.

mnottertail -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 10:59:49 AM)

doooood they do not have a fucking choice, that is NOT their fault nor should they be punished for allowing the rest of you to build those roads they DO NOT NEED except to make you happy in the first place

Again, they have a choice, they immigrated, they are born here, they use our public highways, our services, our courthouses to acquire  land .....

they are not forced, they generally have the cash to hightail it back to switzerland and germany...........let er buck!!!!!  freedom of choice and all that rot.........

Like I said I will hgave to talk with them about that.

why dont you explain WHY they have to pay income taxes in CERTAIN situations   Can you?

Because it is the law.

run away while you still have your ass attached LOL

Unfortunately my ass is fully attached.

At the Kalona Sale Barn, where I've done business, there have been Amish employees. For the sale barn to pay them and not withhold income tax, both state and federal, in addition to Social Security, would be illegal.

Ray Beachy, now dead and gone. Was a 'sometimes' Amish. When the mood fit, he claimed it. When the church tried to constrict his interests, he pretended to have left the faith. He had a housemoving business that ended when he did. He spent his life avoiding paying taxes. He did everything possible to avoid licensing vehicles. He didn't want to give the government anything.

When he died, the IRS swooped in and took EVERYTHING and evicted his widow. There is now a new housing development where the Beachy property once was.

You can pretend your faith excludes you from the law but sooner or later the IRS and the state of Iowa, is going to get what they feel is their fair share.

You can take that to the bank.

barelynangel -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 11:00:42 AM)

Pardon me, Click heels.
But I believe if you look further into this thread,  you will see they DO pay income taxes in some form in many places at least based on what many people are saying. (Smiles).

And no, sorry, i don't read most of what you say as when i gave you the benefit of the doubt most is just watching you try and passive aggressively snark and it bores me.  Perhaps you may change that and i will be more inclined to read more of what you have to say.  Until then when i ask you a question, you may want to realize i probably didn't read all of your posts.

Ms. Angel

They do not pay self-employment tax. They also opt out of its benefits.

Let me ask a question regarding this reflective tape because that to me is what they are objecting too..... the objection i see while the ORANGE is part of the issue they are objecting based on this:

quote:

[color=#0000cc size=2]The men have a religious objection to the bright orange signs, which they say are flashy and conflict with their pledge to live low-key and religious lives.

Reflective tape does the same thing, it makes their vehicles flashy so cars can see them when lights reflect off of them.

I mean okay i am not of their mind but to me, how does an orange sign conflict with a low-key life? Reflective tape to me is worse than an orange sign because its more flashy especially when light hits it.

I would even be up to the government compromising and indicating the sign can be white relective and not orange, but how far should a government have to compromise - what are the Amish willing to do to perhaps find a solution?

As many are saying there are many different versions of the religion yes?  So in the end, any solution the government makes is probably going to cause problems wherein some people decide to shun the people for any compromise they make with the government over laws.

So in the end, it seems as if its an internal issue within their community as a whole.

angel

reflective tape can be very dark gray and nearly noticeable in the day time.

see you people are never satisfied .

Now you even condemn them for not making a big enough compromise.

More like its my way or fuck you thinking.

Driving is a contract, traveling is not.

Musicmystery -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 11:06:52 AM)

Read.

mnottertail -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 11:07:54 AM)

I was the self-employment guy, MM...not R0, you have conflated our arguments.  And the old world amish do not have to pay it, we agree there, for sure, but those communities who were established after 1950 (I believe it was 1950) do.   They are not considered old world.  Now I may be wrong and will doff my straw hat, and be taken to the woodshed, if I am shunned for being incorrect, but........

That is my read on the IRS ruling.

My question is do they pay taxes?

angel

no they do not pay taxes.

you decided you wanted pavement YOU PAY FOR IT!

again you all fail to understand they were here first and you have no right to dictate to them just because you CHANGED the menu.

I'm sorry Real, but I feel I REALLY need to make some comments concerning your posts, dear! (And then I HAVE to get to the store before the next snowfall!!)

I honestly don't feel that this is a question of who came first, therefore implying some don't and some do.
Rules are made for reasons, whether we agree with them or not. It's not a singling out, rather something that brings us all together to avoid total chaos.
Look at it this way perhaps...
Breaking and entering is against the law. So if someone should break into your house, tie you and your loved ones to the back door (oh wait...you might enjoy that, so it may be a moot point, but bear with me here! LOL), and commence to stealing everything personal that means the most to you. Would you not press charges against the robbers because they should have a right to rob you? I don't think so.

I don't think the policeman who wrote the ticket to the Amish was trying to be malicious...although I think a warning would have sufficed (although I was NOT present at the time). And I think the Amish weren't trying to be intentionally malicious by not having a warning sign on their buggy, either.

It was something that happened that was unfortunate all the way around... it was just something that...was!

Ms Click

yep PROVING they prey on those who do not know the law.

He knew the law and would have hung their asses, his poor widow did not.

Hence the constant growth of thuggery

Reading Master Tim's link may give you a better perspective. Such as, I didnt know some states require license plates.

It is interesting to note that certain counties in Indiana and Ohio, where there are a large and growing Amish population, require Amish buggies to get license plates.

and...

Since the Amish own a lot of land, they also pay a lot of property taxes and are liable for estate taxes as well. However, any property taxes paid do not benefit them because they have their own one-room schoolhouses where children are taught by devout, single Amish women until the 8th grade. They also own rather beautiful, typically large homes due to large families (whether or not the Amish pay for Home Insurance is an interesting topic for another article).

mnottertail -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 11:12:02 AM)

They dont pay insurances, it would be a breach of faith to not trust in God, but rather Mutual of Omaha,  it was the argument that saved them from paying into Social Security.

Police are private corporations or quasi corporation that are NOT chartered to protect YOU! they are chartered to protect the courts.

patents granted from old spain france and mommy UK are ALL still valid today.   Punlic policy is required to be within and honor rights, however legislatures are NOT required to make their code conform to those standards.

Hence the evils of the MOB we have today.

mnottertail -> RE: Amish Jailed (1/14/2012 11:19:39 AM)

all very cute and all very without foundation and ultimately wrong.

show us a patent that was valid in 1775 granted to the states that came from George and is in force today....perhaps you should investigate the reasons for our break from English rule, I can assure you they were mercantile at their core.

do you own fucking homework, every time I show you, even supreme court decisions proving a point, you just scoff it away anyway.  If you treated the matter with respect people woud be more inclined to oblige you.

so do your own homework, I was a nice guy just to bring it to your attention.
