on your planet perhaps.   you are the only one here I have seen advocate such an absurd notion as that, however.  I can't back you on that one.

Well Clickofheels, neither do i.  So does that mean i can decide the rules of the road don't apply to me?

My question is do they pay taxes?

angel

no they do not pay taxes.

you decided you wanted pavement YOU PAY FOR IT!

again you all fail to understand they were here first and you have no right to dictate to them just because you CHANGED the menu.

Sorry dude. But here in Iowa, and specifically the counties I know contain Amish settlements, they not only PAY taxes but they also have to charge sales tax in their stores. Dats a fact Jack. I know, I do business with them. If they own property, they have to pay property tax. They have to comply with all of the tax laws that the rest of us do.

And one more...and, again, I dont blame them.

A report in the "Chicago Tribune" says the Amish church in the Illinois counties of LaGrange and Elkhart, where the unemployment rate is 19%, and where much of the state's Amish live, has allowed members to collect unemployment checks.

Umm no RealOne, this is an internal matter for the Amish.   The State has laws that in this matter cannot be compromised as it is dealing with the safety of others including the Amish and outside the Amish.   The Amish need to make allowances for when they use same.

You can scream and stamp your feet that they were here first -- well sucks to be them.   There were a lot of concepts here first.  The State has a duty to all of its citizens, if the Amish feel that doing something the state requires by law means they will shun people of their community then that is an INTERNAL problem, not a State problem.

They can ask the State to help them with the issue but in the end, the shunning that they are worried about and a reason they say they don't want to adhere to the law, becomes an internal issue.

There are several different churches and sects of "Amish", including the Mennonites.  The problems with the triangles are not with Mennonites, but with Old Order Amish.  The article does not make it clear which church the collectors of unemployment belong to, so you can not make the conclusion you do.

Okay, i wanted to know because if they don't pay taxes -- it would mean they don't pay for the upkeep on the roads THEY use.  Which means they are getting something for free.

I didn't think the government would allow them to get away without paying taxes lol.

Nope. The same link shows how they opt out of others.

I forgot all about the road signs that inform drivers they are entering an area where Amish buggies are prevalent. And usually there are quite a few of them before entering a settlement area, as you are driving through, and even after you leave.

I still think what happened in Kentucky is an isolated case.

But as I said, I always enjoy finding out just how educated people are about the Amish. (Smiles)

Respectfully,
Ms Click

I do know that there are rules that even this sect must adhere too. These road rules are not only for the safety of the public, but also for the safety of those in the buggies as well as the horses.

As far as too fast for conditions... there is also a minimum speed limit on many highways they use to travel on.

quote:

These horse and buggies tend to travel at an average speed of 5 to 8 miles per hours.

Most have minimums, that I have seen, of between 25 and 40 miles an hour. Coming up on someone, in the dusk, moving at 8 miles an hour, its going to be a fast approach. Add a curve or bend, and its a recipe for disaster.

Morning, Tazzy! (Smiles)

Oh, I couldn't agree more about the "rules of the road" being for the benefit of both the safety of the public as well as those in buggies and their horses! And thank heavens they have them!
I agree with your entire post, Ma'am. You make a very solid and well-informed post! (Smiles)

Regards,
Ms Click

Roads are paid for with gasoline excise taxes. Anyone can opt out by not buying gasoline.

Generally, it not taxes that they don't accept or believe in.  It's assistance from outside their community.  There may be some exceptions, as pointed out above, but generally they will not accept any government funded program.  Many of them have an exception from requiring to pay or have a SSN for this reason.

When they immigrated they became We, the People....  Nothing was forced on them, they became citizens of the United States, and party and signatory to our constitution and our laws.

A concept I have heard is the underlying dirt road to which they cannot be denied access to travel simply because it has been paved.
