Umm no RealOne, this is an internal matter for the Amish. The State has laws that in this matter cannot be compromised as it is dealing with the safety of others including the Amish and outside the Amish. The Amish need to make allowances for when they use same. You can scream and stamp your feet that they were here first -- well sucks to be them. There were a lot of concepts here first. The State has a duty to all of its citizens, if the Amish feel that doing something the state requires by law means they will shun people of their community then that is an INTERNAL problem, not a State problem. They can ask the State to help them with the issue but in the end, the shunning that they are worried about and a reason they say they don't want to adhere to the law, becomes an internal issue. angel

The problems with the triangles are not with Mennonites, but with Old Order Amish. The article does not make it clear which church the collectors of unemployment belong to, so you can not make the conclusion you do. Firm

Okay, i wanted to know because if they don't pay taxes -- it would mean they don't pay for the upkeep on the roads THEY use. Which means they are getting something for free. I didn't think the government would allow them to get away without paying taxes lol. angel

Anyone can opt out by not buying gasoline.

There may be some exceptions, as pointed out above, but generally they will not accept any government funded program. Many of them have an exception from requiring to pay or have a SSN for this reason. Firm
