DarkSteven -> It's gonna be NASTY. (1/20/2012 7:45:42 PM)

I expect this upcoming election to be by far the nastiest in history.  That's for two reasons.  One, the existence of PACs allows for negative campaigning that the candidate is sort of independent from.  Two, Newt's already brought the slime and he hasn't really gotten started yet.

It's kinda fun to predict what election themes we'll see based on each scenario.

1. Paul vs Obama.  Probably the cleanest election possible.  Paul has, more than any other candidate, stuck to the issues.  I would expect to see no personal attacks, with Paul simply claiming that the government has grown too big and he's the only man to rein it in.  Obama would simply cherry pick his accomplishments and run on his record.

2. Santorum vs Obama.  I'm not sure if and how much Santorum would try to recast himself as a centrist after positioning himself as a solid conservative in the primary.  He'd have a tricky job, trying to keep his conservative following while appealing to the independents at the same time.  If he's smart, he'll switch from social issues to the economy.

3. Romney vs Obama.  This is weird.  Romney planned to campaign as an accomplished manager and someone who understood prosperity.  Gingrich has attacked those stances already, and painted Romney as a job-destroyer who uses arcane tax laws (the common 15% capital gains rate) to weasel out of taxes.  It will  be easy for Obama's PACs to pull up what Newt has already said about him and have the extra authority of coming from a fellow Republican.  Expect to see the weirdness of Romney saying that Obama is what's wrong with the American economy and Obama saying that Romney (layoffs, offshoring, tax weaseling, offshore bank accounts) is what's wrong with the American economy.

4. Gingrich vs Obama.  This will be the nastiest campaign in history.  On paper, Gingrich has huge liabilities due to character issues and ethics convictions.  And numerous Republicans have made public statements recently attacking Gingrich, which will be recycled by Obama's PACs.  But Gingrich invented nasty politics and will be in his element.  He's hurting Romney very effectively and will find some attack for Obama as well.

Who is Roemer?

kdsub -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/20/2012 8:39:13 PM)

I think people are making too much of Gingrich's infidelities and hypocrisy...Republicans or right leaning independents...even those with strong religious beliefs will still reluctantly pick him over Obama...how could they not?

Obama is raising 1 billion dollars, and has no record to run on, his only strategy is to go negative... Look at what they did to Palin, and Cain.

No matter who wins the Republican nomination, we're in for a street fight.

tazzygirl -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/20/2012 9:20:52 PM)

What did "They" do to Palin and Cain? And who are "They"?

Lucylastic -> RE: It's gonna be NASTY. (1/20/2012 9:21:28 PM)

its all down to Obama playing nasty????
REALLY?
gooood heavens, do people actually believe that???

That number sounded ridiculous, so I checked it.  It's pretty accurate.  He's supposed to have about $750 million right now, and the general election hasn't even started.

and has no record to run on,

Huh?
Passed the health care bill.
Withdrew us from Iraq.
Managed to not invade Libya while supporting the insurgency, while the Republicans were tripping all over themselves opposing his policy no matter whether it made sense or not.
Handled a very delicate Arab Spring.
Continued Bush's TARP bailout and tax cuts.
Surged in Afghanistan.
Fought Somali pirates.
Killed Osama bin Laden.
Expanded the use of drone attacks in Pakistan.

That's off the top of my head.  I'm not saying I agreed with all of it, but saying he has no record is ridiculous.

"They" being Obama?  Palin actually asked for the negativity.  She'd much rather be controversial than overlooked.  She's a media figure that thrives on buzz.  I'm not sure why she's gotten no press for months.  Cain dug his own grave by assuming his stories would stay buried.  For both Cain and Palin, I don't see Obama's hand in burying them.

Agreed.

And three............new rules and procedures have been instituted by the GOP to purposely extend the primary season. In the past, one guy would take the lead and run away with it quickly.

The GOP is actually punishing some states for breaking the rules including Florida, where the National Republican Convention is to be held.

Not many people would want to run in that record even in a good economic year.

Only one item- kill OBL- is a consequential bipartisan winner. ( I consider the pirate thing to be vanishingly small)
With Islamists clearly taking over in Egypt and Libya, Iraq quite possibly falling into chaos over the summer, Iran quite possibly at war with us or Israel or both by the election, gasoline prices up over 80% since his inauguration day and rising... you list 9 "accomplishments" and 6 involve the Middle East? Interesting.

The majority of Americans hate the current Obamacare plan, 1/2 hate everything about it, and most of the others wanted a single payer plan.
Obama followed Bush's plan to leave Iraq, and Iraq is falling apart
What exactly did attacking Libya have to do with our national security again?
Handled "Arab Spring" quite poorly, and handed Egypt, and Libya to the Muslim Brotherhood
And thanks to Tarp, Stimulus, and bailouts, America is seeing record high unemployment claims
One Navy Seal took a brilliant shot, Somali Pirates are still quite active
Kudos for whacking OBL
I wouldn't be bragging about drone attacks, after roasting Bush for invading Iraq, who had nothing to do with 9-11, and whining about collateral damage for 6 years.

I'm not bragging about anything.  You said he'd accomplished nothing, so I listed accomplishments off the top of my head, while claiming that I didn't agree with all of them.  I'm simply disputing your claim and listing supporting material.

You're imagining it.  Gingrich has shown himself to be imaginative.  He's destroying the GOP's firm stance on economic laissez-faire by trashing Romney's accomplishments and attacked King for daring to suggest that decent, honorable people like Newt actually be held to standards.  I'm surprised how effective he's been.

Conservatives may hold their nose and vote for Gingrich...or they may stay away in droves. Either way, they will be less motivated to rally the troops.

It's not just one person, one vote, it's also how many other people you can encourage to vote, give rides to polling locations, get the group energy and synergy going, etc.

You mean like the dems punished MI by not putting all of the candidates on the primary ballot in the last election?

If those with "strong religious views" are going to favour the polyNewt over a rival with no history of cheating on his other half, then they're as big a bunch of hypocritical arsewits as Gringrich is, frankly.

Butch

Funny. I am an independent. Generic Dude is an independent. My pressman is an independent. The person that owns my company is a republican as is his family. I am pretty certain my graphics guy is a democrat as are the basement bitches. A lot of my family is republican. My elderly neighbours are democrats.

No one I've talked politics loves everything the president has done, or not done. I see the republicans frantically searching for a candidate they can believe in, and failing. I see/hear the independents and democrats laughing about what the republicans keep coming up with. I've seen a lot of Ron Paul signs in yards. I've heard comparisons, that Gingrich reminds them of Dick Cheney and that is a great big 'oh hell no'.

Based upon what I've seen and heard, given the current crop of repub offerings. there are going to be a lot of people reluctantly voting for Obama.
