I have nothing but the highest regard for Congresswoman Giffords but getting shot like that isn't even on the same plane as someone who's been shot in combat.

Yes, it stands out in your posts on this issue. [8|]

How the hell you think one type of getting shot in the line of duty, differs from another, beats me.

TheHeretic -> RE: Giffords honored by Navy, names ship after her (2/11/2012 4:35:51 PM)

Ken, you posted a link that says Paul outraised Obama by 50% among military donors, and then claimed he won, except for the guy who whupped him. I remarked that it was amazing how you could make such a claim, with just the right application of a weasel word.

Is my observation not factual?

Ken did say "Viable candidate" Rich.

Some crazy leftie shoots you and 8 others and *you* get a Navy ship named after you?

The, "U.S.S. Crazy Mike."

Do you have any possible thread of a hope of saying that nutbag was a lefty?

Those on the left are anti-gun, remember? Therefore, he could not be a lefty by the very definition of the word 'lefty".

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Giffords honored by Navy, names ship after her (2/11/2012 4:46:58 PM)

Her being shot might be a factor, but my guess is that she is being honored this way in lieu of receiving the Congressional Gold Medal for her incredible bravery, i.e., being a Democrat in Arizona.

Yes, he did, Polite. I even quoted him saying "viable," in my initial response. It's a completely arbitrary condition to apply to the fact of who walks away with far more donations. He's claiming (and I'm perfectly happy to go totally redundant with this) that President Obama won, except for the guy who really won, and beat him by 50% margin.

But as you note, by adding the word, "viable," his statement becomes both accurate, and absolutely meaningless. Amazing.

Now, we should probably get back towards the ship, and the rest of the thread before a mod shows up.

Personally, I think the best proof that the Marines are part of the Navy, is how incredibly defensive Marines get when you mention the deep historical connection between the services, or that the Marines don't have their own football team to root for. [:D]

Years later we would all find out that not only wasn't there a "gap" the Soviets couldn't hit the broad side of a continent with theirs anyway...lol.

They did not seem to have any problem knocking gary powers and his u2 out of the sky.
They did chuck stuff into outerspace before we did.

What the Soviet navy is, is around 200 subs that they can't even afford to keep in the water anymore. The Soviet missile system was several levels above its surface navy which is almost nothing.

The missile gap had Kennedy fooled. Under Nixon/Kissinger and detente, the Soviets were allowed some IC tech. Conveniently they didn't take long to expand it and presto, welcome the Russian 'MIRV' missile. (multiple independently targeted, re-entry vehicles)

So with that 'given' to them and their much cheaper and cost effective mobile system that we had never deployed, became yet another threat defeated only by massive nos. of missiles and yep, star wars.

War bloody, hot or not and cold wars too, are to be...a profit center.

Politesub53 -> RE: Giffords honored by Navy, names ship after her (2/11/2012 5:32:45 PM)

Over here the Royal Marines have always been considered to be part of the Navy. The clue is in the name and dates back to the days when Marines where naval sharpshooters deployed in the rigging.

Aylees notion of "Navel infantry" delighted me, since it sounds like a platoon of Bellydancers [8D]

slvemike4u -> RE: Giffords honored by Navy, names ship after her (2/11/2012 5:33:01 PM)

The marines actually think very highly of the Navy, they can usually be counted on to give due credit to the navy for delivering them to the right beach....other than that....pffft,not so much,it goes back to Guadalcanal(I think) when the Navy in their infinite wisdom decided that getting their ships out of harms way was way more important than sticking around to a)lend gunfire support to the Marines fighting for their very lives on the 'Canal...or b) sticking around long enough to off load all of the equipment necessary to effect a favorable outcome in that same fight [:)]

Does any of that alter what was later found out about their ability to control where their long range missiles were going to impact ?

...it wasn't pretty but Saddam wasn't far off at all with his short scuds. That experience suggests that with nukes the Russians could...get close enough.

Recall kinkroids, close only counts in horseshoes and...H-bombs.

Actually my statement is correct and on point as the person I was replying to claimed that most servicepeople hated the President. Showing that he had gotten lots of donations from servicepeople was a very effective counter point to that claim. Your whining about my accurate statement is just nonsense.

Boy, it's amazing how much you can twist the goalposts with a single word, ain't it, Ken? President Obama came in first, except for the guy who beat him? According to your link, Paul has pulled in $300,000, and that is $100,000 more than Obama raised.

Of course, should anyone show up around here suggesting that the military and veterans are all in some sort of philosophical lockstep, they can simply be referred to any conversation you and I have ever shared in these threads.

Are you claiming Paul has any chance of winning your party's nomination? Are you claiming that anyone else has raised more money from the military than the President?

If not then what are you whining about? Was my post not factual?

Kenneth, it's awful tough to believe anything you say when without a moment's warming you can start singing the praises of "global warming" (or whatever they're calling it this week.) much like a holy roller who, "gets the spirit in aisle 12 at Walmart."
"Security, aisle 12 for an Obama voter!"

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, still recovering from a shot through the brain, was informally awarded another Purple Heart on Wednesday.

Army veteran Al Lee said that Giffords deserves the honor.

"She was injured in the line of duty," he said.

"I wanted her to have it because of her strong support of veterans and her ability to always recognize a military servicemember such as myself," Lee said.

Lee, who was awarded the medal after being wounded in Fallujah, Iraq, in Sept. 2003, presented his Purple Heart challenge coin to Pam Simon, Giffords' community outreach director, on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — This is true: Gabe Zimmerman, community outreach director for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot to death while working as a congressional aide.
This is true, too: He was not the first Capitol Hill staffer killed in the line of duty.

I just wanted to point out that not every member of the service thinks as popeye does.
