I can't get over the feeling that many of those who are objecting to the naming of the ship after Giffords regret, in the blackness of their partisan political hearts, that she survived the assassination attempt. After all, she was (and still is) a liberal Democrat and the only correct punishment (in their heart-of-hearts) for the "treason" of being a liberal Democrat should be death.

What an awful place it must be, inside your head. I pity you.

The canal was not the only place the navy hung the marines out to dry.

I never said it was Thompson, just the starkest example and the most reviled institutional memory [:)]

I can't,and won't,in my head nor my heart go that far FD....nah,these are after all my fellow citizens [8|].

Maybe I get this feeling by looking at the Forums on Military dot com and my periodic research on Right-wing extremist websites like FreeRepublic ("Know your enemy - read what they publish or post").

"Gabrielle Giffords Honored By Navy, Littoral Combat Ship To Bear Her Name"

I think a great way to acknowledge what happened that day would be to name something after somebody who died, not somebody who was injured. She'll be taken care of for life in every possible way, she doesn't really need her name on a boat hull.

If someone was going to name something after me, I'd be disgraced if they chose a weapon of war. That would be a huge insult. I guess some people see it as an honor..?

Ahem

In the civilian leadership structure of the United States military, the Marine Corps is a component of the United States Department of the Navy, often working closely with U.S. naval forces for training, transportation, and logistic purposes; however, in the military leadership structure the Marine Corps is a separate branch.

Well thankyou Princess Obvious.
Of course the Marines are a,....."component"... of the Navy. The U.S. Coast Guard is as well but only in time of war and all three branches wear different uniforms.
They were started to go after pirates off the naval ships during the barbery pirate wars. And, they didn't "arrest" them.....
And, look up "Little Tun Tavern.
Perhaps our resident military expert General Thompson could explain that to you.
And, do you know why the Sailors wear bell bottom pants? If the ship sinks you can get them off quickly over your shoes, tie the bottoms off and raise the waiste to your head from behind you, slap the waiste part sharply down on the water and the legs fill up with air and you hop up on top of them and have an instant life preserver.
Now General Thompson will probably disagree with that but any Sailor or Marine can tell you it's true. They teach you that in bootcamp during water survival classes which the Marines take as well because they are often aboard U.S. Navy ships.
"Ohhhhhhhhhhh,.......I am the very model of a model major gen-er-al!"
You guys seem a little down, should I start another "anti-illegal alien" thread to cheer you up?

Once again for those who choose not to actually read what I post. The navy department is the boats and the sailors and they are a component of the department of the navy.
The navy department is headed by the cno (chief of naval operations) and is not in the marine corps chain of command. The commandant of the marine corps reports directly to the president and sec nav (a civilian) if the president feels it necessary.
So once again the marine corps and the navy department are co-equal branches of the department of the navy...the marine corps is not part of the navy department.

The U.S. Coast Guard is as well but only in time of war and all three branches wear different uniforms.

The coast guard in time of peace is part of homeland security.

They were started to go after pirates off the naval ships during the barbery pirate wars. And, they didn't "arrest" them.....

The marine corps was insstituted in 1798 under president adams. The barbary wars were 1801-5 under president jefferson.

And, look up "Little Tun Tavern.
Perhaps our resident military expert General Thompson could explain that to you.

That would be the birth place of the continental marines who were disbanded in 1783

Now General Thompson will probably disagree with that but any Sailor or Marine can tell you it's true.

Actually it is only partly true. The only part of a sailors uniform(below the rank of chief) that cannot be used as a life preserver is his watch cap. Even his dixie cup hat works as a life preserver.

You are back to name calling again.

The rest of your post... you havent said anything I didnt already know. Why you felt the need to attack me when my post was NOT in reply to anything YOU said, I have no clue.

You forget, you are not the only one who knows about the Coast Guard.

And the name you called me was not? You set yourself up as having knowledge no one else could possibly have. I grew up in that service. Cape May and Sandy Hook should ring some bells for you. We were stationed at Fort Monmouth for a while as well.

disingenuous - adjective lacking in frankness, candor, or sincerity; falsely or hypocritically ingenuous ; insincere.

I assure you, I was quite sincere, quite frank, and nothing I stated was false.

Hey, there's the old Sarge!
Yes, but I was talking exclusively about bell bottoms not white "dixie cup" hats.
You can make a PFD out of a lot of things.
Private Thompson, if I told you the sun was shinning you'd say that it was cloudy outside.

Fuck yes I am offended. I wouldnt expect you to understand. Just because someone does it to you does NOT give you the right to do it to someone else.

Is that so fucking hard for people to understand around this damned place?

Its become a fucking free for all, the skirting of the rules, the Mods allowing it to happen, and then they wonder why it implodes and they are overworked.

its because they allow the small shit to slide by, thinking... its not that bad... and those who are getting away with it continue and continue until the Mods have no choice but to call a halt, and they complain that no one in this forum can behave.

While they dont cause anyone to misbehave, at times, they do seem to turn a blind eye to it, encouring the offenders to do more and more to push that envelope.

Sorry, Tazzy, but the link you posted specifically mentioned telling LIES about a poster.

Posting an opinion that someone is being captain/princess/whatever Obvious, IMO, does not fall into that restriction. (opinion = calling someone princess obvious, etc)

(sleepy..toddling off now...)

Oh, you can tell the truth about a poster and still be moderated via personal attack.

You can quote me.
