Once again for those who choose not to actually read what I post. The navy department is the boats and the sailors and they are a component of the department of the navy.
The navy department is headed by the cno (chief of naval operations) and is not in the marine corps chain of command. The commandant of the marine corps reports directly to the president and sec nav (a civilian) if the president feels it necessary.
So once again the marine corps and the navy department are co-equal branches of the department of the navy...the marine corps is not part of the navy department.

The U.S. Coast Guard is as well but only in time of war and all three branches wear different uniforms.

The coast guard in time of peace is part of homeland security.

They were started to go after pirates off the naval ships during the barbery pirate wars. And, they didn't "arrest" them.....

The marine corps was insstituted in 1798 under president adams. The barbary wars were 1801-5 under president jefferson.

And, look up "Little Tun Tavern.
Perhaps our resident military expert General Thompson could explain that to you.

That would be the birth place of the continental marines who were disbanded in 1783

And, do you know why the Sailors wear bell bottom pants? If the ship sinks you can get them off quickly over your shoes, tie the bottoms off and raise the waiste to your head from behind you, slap the waiste part sharply down on the water and the legs fill up with air and you hop up on top of them and have an instant life preserver.
Now General Thompson will probably disagree with that but any Sailor or Marine can tell you it's true.

Actually it is only partly true. The only part of a sailors uniform(below the rank of chief) that cannot be used as a life preserver is his watch cap. Even his dixie cup hat works as a life preserver.

And the name you called me was not? You set yourself up as having knowledge no one else could possibly have. I grew up in that service. Cape May and Sandy Hook should ring some bells for you. We were stationed at Fort Monmouth for a while as well.
