ORIGINAL: GreedyTop yeah. it's SO much more tragic when a "star' dies than when the only child of a nobody dies. oh wait. sorry. it only APPEARS to be more tragic because the star that chose to do a public meltdown/drugs/rehab etc gets all the press. yeah yeah.. whit had a good voice. blah blah, I wouldn't be so negative if I saw even a fraction of this much "so sad" kinda postings applied to the kid that died at 16 from a heroin OD, and the only folks who would notice it were the family and the cops. yeah, I'm being a bitch. deal. I think people who lived their lives in the public eye will naturally get more attention when they die - just like someone who had more friends during their lifetime is likely to get more friends attending their funeral than someone who had few friends or a very small family. This doesn't make the death any less or more tragic, but it does make it very public when a public figure dies. I'm not sure what else you would expect to happen. If an old person who is living alone in a remote part of the world with no family or friends dies, yes, it is still tragic, but I'm at a loss for why we would all be discussing it on the Internet other than to discuss the topic of death generally - and yes, you will get no arguments from me that death is sad. Period. But this thread is a thread about Whitney Houston. If you would like to start a thread on the 16 year old who died from a heroin OD, then please do so, and those who knew him/her or about him/her can participate in that thread, too. I did quite clearly state in my post that addiction is really a tragic thing, and gave my public service message (which applies to everyone) on the topic of addiction and how addiction kills. I think it is to be expected that someone who was known to a lot of people through their involvement in music would be mourned by all the people whose lives her music touched. I think you are confusing two issues in your mind. No one here is disputing the overall tragedy of death. But I'm not going to start talking about how much I miss my grandmother on a thread that is about Whitney Houston. I miss my grandmother more than Whitney Houston, but this thread isn't about my terrific grandmother (who couldn't sing, but was still terrific). But Whitney Houston's death is one that the public will mourn - she touched a lot of people with her music.
