kalikshama -> Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 6:33:15 AM)

Tell the FDA that we have a right to know what's in our food.

By Eric Schlosser and Gary Hirshberg

To be delivered to: U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Commissioner Hamburg, we urge the FDA to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods. We have a right to know about the food we eat and what we feed our families, but under current FDA regulations, we don’t have that ability when it comes to genetically engineered foods.

Polls show that more than 90% of Americans support mandatory labeling. Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare. Please listen to the American public and mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods.

The FDA is on the brink of approving genetically engineered salmon for human consumption. This would be the first genetically engineered animal on supermarket shelves in the United States. The salmon is engineered to produce growth hormones year-round that cause the fish to grow at twice the normal rate. The government already requires labels to tell us if fish is wild-caught or farm-raised – don't we also have a right to know if our salmon is genetically engineered? Without labels, we'll never know.

More than forty countries, including Russia and China, already require labels on genetically engineered foods. As Americans, we firmly believe that we deserve the same right to know what we are eating.

That's why we hope you'll join us and over half a million other Americans in telling the FDA to require labels on genetically engineered foods.

Eric Schlosser is the author of Fast Food Nation and a producer of the documentary Food, Inc. Gary Hirshberg is the Chairman of Stonyfield Farm and an advocate for sustainable food.

By signing this petition, you will be submitting a comment to the FDA.

TheBigDog -> RE: Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 7:38:15 AM)

Yeah more government regulation is what we need in our lives. I get so sick of do-gooders trying to tell us what we can put in our own damned bodies when they should really be straightening there own lives out. Who is with me?

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 7:42:55 AM)

And how are you going to make an informed choice on what to put in your body if you don't even know what it is?

This just shows how deep derangement has gotten to in America these days. We can't even make decisions without government warning labels? I am a smart man and I will make my own decisions. My dad lived to be 93 years old and he didn't have any government warning labels just hard work and good genes.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 7:48:04 AM)

Bizarre -- so are you okay with the "gub'ment" tampering with organisms to alter their genes, insert other genes, and such?

People who want to avoid modified foods aren't "deranged." They're people who want their food the way it's meant to be. If you don't want the labeling, are you okay with accepting the government's word on everything? If they tell you something's okay, you'll accept that at face value?

Sorry, that's not me. I want to know WHAT this is, so I can make a choice whether or not to buy it.

TheBigDog -> RE: Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 7:51:12 AM)

Their people looking for someone else to blame for their own problems so they try to blame big bad corporations. People need to just learn to live their own damn lives without begging for more and more intervention like a bunch of slaves.

You clearly don't even understand the issue. =p Wowzers.

I don't believe the OP is talking about "warning labels" as you describe. The OP is talking about labeling to tell us the contents of the product, similar to the ingredient list on all foods that we currently have. They are not talking about a warning label similar to what is on cigarettes, for example.

I understand you are smart and will make your own decisions. But how, exactly do you plan to identify genetically modified salmon if it is not labeled as such? Do you know something about salmon that the rest of us don't, because if you know of a way to identify it without the label, I, for one, would really like to know that.

I think it is her way of saying that it is beneath her to try to address such massive ignorance.

My dad lived to be 93 years old and he didn't have any government warning labels just hard work and good genes.

Maybe the reason he lived so long is that he wasn't eating that crap.

Maybe the reason kids are so sickly and have all these damn alphabet soup problems (ADD, ADHD, NSKB) is all the additives and hormones in the food.

In your dad's day, girls hit puberty at about 12-14 years old. Now, it's not unusual to see it at 8-9 years old. Ya think all the damn hormones in the meat they eat might have something to do with that?

No, we can't do anything about that. Some poor megacorp might not like it and cut campaign funding for their pet Senator.

I don't think modification is bad. I got a lot of friends and family in agriculture and modification has done wonders for their farms yields and for the cattle they raise.

Great. Then you and your friends and family just go right ahead and eat as much modified food as possible.

But I am not interested in eating genetically modified salmon, so I would like it to be identified on the package as such. Simple as that. You are free to make your decision, and I am free to make mine.

Yeah basically -- it's like someone wanting to move to the second floor of a house that hasn't even been built yet. Sorry, I'm not building that house. =p

Exactly!
Actually, many girls didn't get their periods until even later, when they were 16 or 17.
I got mine at 9, and I'm pretty sure that's not normal -- well it is now, I guess.

If you breed salmon to constantly generate growth hormone, we have absolutely no idea how eating that might affect a human being. Hormones can't be "cooked out" of food -- cooking does not degrade the chemicals to the point where they have no effect.

The reason it is difficult to build scientific responses to these silly ideas is because THE SCIENCE ISN'T THERE. As far as I know, nobody's thought it was important enough to spend money on a long-term population study to determine what the effects of foods like this really are.

So I would much rather have the option of choosing to buy something that isn't modified in such a way.

It's times like these that I really regret the new stricter moderation.

K.

kalikshama -> RE: Petition: mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods (2/15/2012 8:24:47 AM)

Is the moderation stricter in Off Topic?

Probably you can't simply call him an idiot but will have to settle for showing him how he's an idiot.

If it's not labeled as GMO how are you going to make the decision whether or not to buy a GMO product?

Conventional farming is neither healthy nor sustainable.

MAD COWBOY: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won't Eat Meat

A fourth-generation Montana rancher, Lyman investigated the use of chemicals in agriculture after developing a spinal tumor that nearly paralyzed him. Now a vegetarian, he blasts through the propaganda of beef and dairy interests -- and the government agencies that protect them -- to expose an animal-based diet as the primary cause of cancer, heart disease, and obesity in this country. He warns that the livestock industry is repeating the mistakes that led to Mad Cow disease in England while simultaneously causing serious damage to the environment.

Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, Mad Cowboy is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet -- for the good of the planet and the health of us all.

...I truly believe that everyone should be informed, particularly with regards to what they are placing in their mouths, and this is an excellent, easy-to-read personal account that does just that. Howard Lyman, a fourth generation cattle rancher, blows some of the common misconceptions and agribusiness propaganda right out the window in this straight forward and, at times, humorous expose that comes, so to speak, straight from the horses mouth.

Lyman doesn't waste any time in getting right to the gritty, gruesome details behind the highly politicized business of food production. Within the opening pages, he informs us that cattle, chickens, and pigs are fed "protein concentrates" consisting of euthanized pets, ground up diseased farm animals, fecal matter, and roadkill. Not only are fodder animals being fed this vomit-inducing mixture, but our pets are as well. Yummy!

Lyman spends a good amount of time discussing the impact that the aforementioned practice could have on America's potential to see "Mad Cow Disease" effecting people in the not-so-distant future, which has been a steadily increasing problem in Britain. He points out several studies that debunk the myth that spongiform encephalopathy cannot jump species barriers.

In addition to the Mad Cow and Downed Cow issues, Lyman brings up the issue of rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) used to increase milk production in cows and the possible effects this could have on human health. To combat the mastitis that develops from the use of rBGH, cows are given antibiotics that are then passed to the dairy consumer in various milk products. With the increased use of antibiotics comes increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

... Lyman spends several pages of his book discussing overgrazing and it's environmental impact. Rainforests are being depleted, in part, due to the need for land for cattle to graze, as are riparian woodlands. Native species are going extinct because of the human desire for burgers and steaks. Flooding and erosion have become a problem because of overgrazing and lack of natural vegetation. The list goes on and on.
