kalikshama -> Petition: Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. (3/6/2012 10:23:49 AM)

Sandra Fluke, a law student at Georgetown University who was advocating for health insurance plans to cover the cost of contraception, became the target of a series of attacks by Limbaugh. Besides calling her a "slut," he also called her a "prostitute," said that he wanted her to make sex tapes and post them online, and speculated that she only had a problem paying for contraception because she was having "so much sex."

We who support Ms. Fluke, find that this is a serious offense enacted by Mr. Limbaugh and we ask that his radio show be terminated.

Rush Limbaugh's radio show is a part of the Clear Channel lineup. Let's send a message to them that no longer can they allow Rush Limbaugh the opportunity to spew hateful and sometimes derogatory comments. Sign the petition and help get this done.

Speaking of Clear Channel:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clear_Channel_Communications#Censorship

...Clear Channel has been criticized for censoring opinions critical of George W. Bush and other Republicans. After Natalie Maines, the singer of the Dixie Chicks, told a London audience "we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas", the band's radio airplay dropped precipitously. Clear Channel was accused of orchestrating the radio blacklist by such critics as Paul Krugman.

While a smaller percentage of Clear Channel's AM talk/music stations have been in the progressive talk format (featuring the now-cancelled Air America Radio network) and they have also been a media sponsor of Frameline, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival,[47] most (nearly 90 percent) of Clear Channel's radio stations feature right wing content

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Howard_Stern_Show#Departure_from_terrestrial_radio_.282004.E2.80.932005.29

On February 26, 2004, Stern was cancelled on six stations owned by Clear Channel Communications after a caller used the word "n*****" when asking Rick Salomon if he ever had sex with a black person the day before.[79] Following the issue of a $495,000 fine to Clear Channel by the FCC, which cited sexual discussions on a show from 2003, Stern was removed permanently on the six stations.

During the nationwide crackdown on indecent material following the 2004 Super Bowl, Clear Channel launched a "self-policing" effort, and declared that there would be no "indecent" material allowed on the air.[32] This led to the company's dismissal of several of their own employees, including popular and high-profile hosts in a number of cities. Free-speech advocates cried foul. During this same period, Howard Stern was dropped from six Clear Channel owned stations in Florida, California, Pennsylvania, New York and Kentucky.

Forget it. Far more effective to contact companies that advertise on Limbaugh's show and threaten to boycott them.

The clear channel won't blackball Rush. It isn't like he's some mouthy liberal who shouldn't be allowed to speak in America like Nathalie Gaines, is it?

I'm always befuddled by the number of people...Americans...who are ready to silence the person they don't agree with as if the right to free speech is something reserved for only those they approve of.

If you don't like what any of these dimwit mouthpieces has to say, change the channel.

I think that's what's happening here.

What if a dimwitted mouthpiece helped lie a nation into war?

How do you turn that channel off?

Are we talking about Rush Limbaugh or George Bush?

Please tell me you're not trying to convince me that anyone other than the governmrent bears the responsibility for committing this nation to any war. And if a radio mouthpiece convinces our government to go to war simply based on what they were saying then obviously our government officials should be replaced...which we've done. What has THAT gotten us?

Oh....media has a lot to do with nations being mislead....into war and elsewhere......and sometimes even manages to save us from a huge mess(read Sarah Palin)

LOL! Amen to that.

But seriously...if we allow the media to convince us to start an unjust war then we failed to think for ourselves. JMO

I'm not a big Rush fan. but I hope Clear Channel doesn't drop him. Two reasons:

(a) From a free-speech perspective, I prefer not to see anyone silenced. Better, I think, to respond vigorously, shining light into the darkness.

(b) From a partisan perspective, getting Rush's show dropped would make him, wrongly, into a martyr. No one needs that.

I happened to be listening to his show the day he made the comment. As soon as I heard the word "slut" pass his lips I cringed and thought to myself, "I bet you're gonna pay for that one, Rush".

I have been proven correct. LOL!

Personally, I don't care if he gets dropped or not. I don't base my thinking on what he says. Some days I find him entertaining. Other days he sounds like a tool. But if he get's dropped I don't see it turning into a martyr situation even though someone in the media is sure to try to spin it that way. I certainly won't elevate him to martyr status.

fucktoyprincess -> RE: Petition: Clear Channel: Discontinue Rush Limbaugh's radio talk show. (3/6/2012 6:11:38 PM)

FR

As much as I dislike what he said, and dislike him as a human being, and dislike pretty much most of his views on everything, I don't believe in putting the muzzle on anyone. I am a big supporter of the First Amendment and the concept of market place of ideas. Let all the ideas come out, and we will pick and choose what we like, but we won't silence people for speaking. In fact, one of specific things that I didn't like about Limbaugh's statements about Fluke is that he was trying to intimidate her and others with the same opinion from continuing to speak up for their rights. He is entitled by the Constitution of our country to continue to spew his hatred. We don't have to like it. And we can criticize him for it. But I think trying to stop his show is not appropriate.

The only thing we can hope for is that as the debate around rights and appropriateness continues, that maybe some people will start to feel that they should not be listening to him anymore. One can always hope that hateful vitriol of the sort that he spreads will just become unpopular at some point. I certainly don't listen to him. And none of my friends do.

But no. No muzzle.

I won't either, but I think there are plenty of folks who will. Here, for instance, is the banner currently atop NewsBusters.org.
