From a partisan perspective, getting Rush's show dropped would make him, wrongly, into a martyr. No one needs that.

Are you sure?
Nobody batted an eyelid when clear channel got rid of Howard Stern...

That's my point. I want Clear Channel to adhere to their "self policing" standards.

Fat chance.

He is already a martyr to his listeners, just read the right wing forums...but use a healthy dose of brain bleach. The ignorance of some of them is astounding

Limbaugh's audience is huge. That alone is worth lots to Clear Channel. I'll bet Limbaugh's ratings went up.

Cancel Rush?

Not on your life.

It's just business. And business, i.e. El Rushbo, is very very good.

Oh yes they did.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A year ago, Pittsburgh radio station WXDX-FM was near the top of its game on weekday mornings. Today it's fighting hard for listeners.

What changed? Two words: Howard Stern.

But the Clear Channel radio stations have since paid a steep price. All six have lost a significant number of weekday morning listeners, according to new data from Arbitron, the country's top radio ratings service.

The lost market share only shows that Stern, love him or hate him, is "one of the biggest radio attractions in the modern era," said Michael Harrison, the publisher of Talkers, a monthly radio talk show trade magazine. "He's a phenomenon."

Clear Channel isn't going to make that mistake again.

I'm always befuddled by the number of people...Americans...who are ready to silence the person they don't agree with as if the right to free speech is something reserved for only those they approve of.

If you don't like what any of these dimwit mouthpieces has to say, change the channel.

No one is trying to silence him they just want to take away his bully pulpit...There is a huge difference.

This is it, really. Rush can put whatever face he wants on it, but this is a punch back that does show Mr. Untouchable that he is in fact Touchable.

FR

I don't think anyone should be censored from most things. I do think that should things should be disallowed (screaming obscene statements at grade schoolers comes to mind) but I don't think Rush falls into that category. I do think Rush as a massive tool who causes harm to this country but I think a good chuck of the harm that's caused is due to irresponsible listeners. That said, free speech doesn't mean that advertisers are somehow required to sponsor every ass who has something to say. Companies advertise to increase or maintain their bottom lines. If it is not cost effective or is detrimental to them to run ads on a particular show then they obviously have to the right if not obligation to pull those ads. Stations fun shows that can attract advertisers. If a particular show drives advertisers away then the station should cut the show. In other words, a channel canceling a show is not a "Free speech" issue.

In regards to Rush in particular, his job has been to say what he says in the manner that he says it because it keeps his listeners listening. His show is not a news show, it's not fact show, it's not anything but one long editorial with lots of hype to make people tune in again. The only problem that I see is that some people treat it like it's news. I even hear national politicians spew the talking points as though they were facts. (Things about Planned Parenthood, people being paid to have sex, and the huge percentage of people that don't pay taxes come to mind.)

[edited to fix the incomplete sentence.]

No one's being censored. Speech comes with responsibility--and that includes the reactions and choices of the listeners.

You can call your boss a fucking prick. You have that right. And when he fires your ass, you have not been censored; you've reaped the consequences of your speech.

Now, if the government shut down Rush, that would be censorship. If Clear Channel whitewashed shows before they aired, that would be censorship (and they would have the right to do that--their business).

What's happening here is an exchange of free speech. Citizens have the right to object. They are objecting.

Just as others have the right to disagree with the objections.

It is interesting, though that there's a petition on the whitehouse website (which we pay for) to remove Limbaugh from AFR.

I am not saying people don't have a right to ask for this. I'm saying: if it's on the whitehouse website, isn't that sort of "the government" endorsing the action ie; censorship to some degree?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

It is a .gov site and I'd assume that meant it was a goverment site of some sort but at least that section is where user-created petitions are. Anyone can create and sign a petition. It doesn't look like there are any restrictions other than for profanity and such.
